“Insecurity in a Connected Planet”

Description

The majority of cyber security discussions focus on the

vulnerabilities associated with enterprise IT networks.

Yet over the last 18 month the more widely publicized

cyber exploitations involved direct and lateral attacks

on billing systems, credit card processing and in at

least one case, the computing system for a

manufacturing control system. The motive for these

attacks is generally theft, specifically personal

information to facilitate identity theft and credit cards.

However the risk of data destruction or corruption of

industrial and social processes and control systems is a

growing problem. Bill Leigher's keynote talk will explore

the ubiquity of computer processors in our everyday

activities, the risks inherent to non-IT cyber systems, and

present ways to address the risk to life and property.

On-Premises vs. Service Provider: [9:15am – Oxford]

Choosing the Right Data Center Strategy for Your Organization

CompTIA CE's Approved: A+, Net+, Sec+, Storage+ and CASP

Are you building a primary or secondary data center? Are you trying to address your

organizations’ disaster recovery requirements? In this workshop, we’ll look at the decision

confronting most organizations – whether to build and maintain on-premises data centers or look

to a third-party data center provider – while examining issues such as:

Cost-effectiveness (OPEX vs. CAPEX)

Security

Availability and mitigation of downtime risk

HYPERCONVERGENCE: Part I – Why Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Made Sense for Synernet

CompTIA CE's Approved: A+, Net+, Sec+, Storage+ and CASP

Synernet was at a decision point where it either had to invest in a standard stack of hardware or

embrace hyper converged technology. Researching the benefits and deficits of both options,

hyper-converged infrastructure provided by SimpliVity provided the best option for Synernet.

HYPERCONVERGENCE: Part II – Simplifying VDI Without Compromise

CompTIA CE's Approved: Net+ and Sec+

Is your IT Infrastructure holding back innovation? Hyper-Convergence is a paradigm shift that

empowers companies of any size, to employ the same data center transformations that have

allowed Google, Facebook, Amazon to achieve high performance yet simplistic scale – utilizing

an efficient solution that can easily adapt to today’s dynamic business environment. The

evolution of converged architectures has resulted in IT departments rethinking how IT services

are delivered. We would be delighted if you could join us at this technical session, where we will

introduce hyper-convergence and web-scale solutions and how these technologies are

radically changing VDI Designs and Architectures. In this technical session, we will share:

Introduction to Hyper-Convergence and Web-Scale;

How other companies are transitioning from traditional VDI infrastructure to a converged

architecture, and more importantly, why;

Advantages of Hyper-Convergence in VDI Deployments;

recovery options available to them, including traditional operating-system-level application and

data backups, virtual server backups and snapshots, and SAN-level snapshots and replication.

Unfortunately, system administrators unaware of the limitations of each method believe they

have good backups only to find during an emergency restore that they do not. In this workshop,

we’ll review the benefits and limitations of each method, introduce the concept of RPO/RTO

(Recovery Time and Recovery Point Objectives), and provide a framework for system

Want Better Solutions? Think Differently! [11:15am – Cumberland]

CompTIA CE not available.

Some of the best ideas in history were discovered by approaching things in a non-traditional

way. These approaches, termed ‘non-linear thinking’ can produce new ideas and solutions to

problems. When you have a difficult problem and standard solutions are not working it’s time to

shift gears and think differently. In this presentation, we will explore the untapped potential of

the human brain. Citing paths that led to famous inventions and simple exercises, we will reveal

how better solutions are often just a synapse away. Two divergent thinking methods will be

demonstrated and attendees will use one toward the end of the session to prove these

techniques actually work.

The Maine Technology Users Group – History and General Information

In January 1987, under the sponsorship of the University of Southern Maine, representatives from

various Maine businesses and organizations established the Maine Telecommunications Users Group.

In the winter of 2013, MTUG’s name was change to the Maine Technology Users Group to better

reflect the scope of issues it addresses and changes in the industry.

The following guidelines constitute MTUG’s framework:

MTUG organizes and supports informal and formal information technology training and

networking events.

MTUG holds regular meetings with topics of interest to both large and small IT consumers and

producers. Meetings are normally held from September through April of each year.

MTUG constituents share their ideas, experiences, and best practices of a wide variety of

technical issues and topics.

MTUG provides economic benefits to its constituents, Maine businesses and residents by working

with technology and telecommunications providers and legislative and regulatory agencies to

enhance the information technology infrastructure and services available in Maine.

MTUG advances the understanding of state and national regulatory technology issues.

MTUG alerts members to security issues such as scams or other fraudulent activities.

MTUG shares information about IT job openings.

There is no membership fee to participate in MTUG’s regular monthly meetings. Meeting notices

are sent via email to everyone who joins our mailing list at www.mtug.org, and are announced on

MTUG’s LinkedIn Group, as well as other online media outlets.

MTUG’s current audience includes over 1300 individuals, made up of about 42% end-users (including

IT professionals and managers in non-IT service/product organizations), 53% vendors (including

regulated utilities and internet service providers), 3% consultants, and 2% government representatives.

The annual MTUG Information Technology Summit (formerly the Telecommunications and Computer

Networking Conference), held in late spring or early summer, culminates the year’s activities. The

Summit offers an opportunity for IT professionals from a wide range of business interests to come

together in an educational and congenial setting to exchange information and ideas.

Do you know someone who could benefit from MTUG’s programs and services? Do you have an idea

for a workshop topic? Do you just have questions and want to get involved? Contact Kate Carpenter,

Executive Director at [email protected] or 207-370-5327. Alternatively, visit us online at

www.mtug.org to sign up for our newsletter, see our past meeting archives, post a discussion or check

lane, and take 1st right onto State St/Route 77 South through the park. Follow State Street for about 1 mile, past 3

lights (past Park, Cumberland, Congress Aves, where it curves leftward). At the 4th light, take a left onto Spring

Street. Follow Spring Street past Park St. and High St. – after the High Street light, the Holiday Inn will be on the
