Dear Parents, Staff and Children,
Messenger Dogs
Last Monday, students in all year levels enjoyed “Messenger Dogs’ , the story through the eyes
of Nell, Trick and Bullet. Their tales are of courage, determination, endurance and mateship on
the frontline working alongside the Australian Imperial Force. They carried messages from the
front line back to headquarters and were inspirational. The performance was enjoyed by all.
Sunbury West’s Facebook page is now live. Whilst COMPASS continues to be our formal
communication portal, Facebook will serve as a forum to build community spirit and connect
with our school. All families will have received our Facebook Policy and Guidelines and we look
forward to the support of our families in adhering to and modelling appropriate behaviours on
social media. Please return the consent forms to the office as soon as possible.
School Council Casual Vacancy
We are looking to fill a vacancy on School Council for the remainder of this year. If you would
like to join this vibrant group of parents, please contact the office. We meet on the fourth
Wednesday of every month from 6.30pm onwards.
Year 3 /4 Excursion
To coincide with their inquiry unit on Amazing Plants, the Year 3 /4 children set off to the
Botanic Gardens to further investigate the world of flora. As part of this, the children also had
the opportunity to visit The Shrine, 100 years after the signing of the Armistice in 1918.
Uniforms
Please ensure that all student uniforms are clearly labelled with your child’s name. We have an
increasing number of jackets ending up in lost property without names. When labelled, they are
usually returned to the rightful owner promptly.
We also have a number of children who are regularly out of uniform. Where this is a regular
occurrence, we will provide a jumper from sick bay. We currently have a number of items in our
second hand uniform shop if parents would like this as an option.
Curriculum Day
A reminder that tomorrow is a pupil free day. All staff will be engaging in a network professional learning activity on
School Wide Positive Behaviours, an initiative that schools across the Hume district are involved in.
There will be no Sunbury West staff on site at school.

Attendance & Illness Regular attendance is important as it helps school progress, social adjustment and the development of dependability. However, home is the place for a sick child. A sick child cannot work well and may pass his/her illness onto other children and staff.
The Department of Education requires notification for all your child’s absences. We ask that all absences be logged on Compass by 9.15am daily.
Please contact the office on 9740 8666 if you require your Compass username and or password.
Community News
Each week as we receive Community News items we will be adding them to the newsletter as a separate attachment. Community News contains items such as Local Sporting Club try outs and events, craft clubs, parenting workshops and much more.

Social Media and the School Community
The internet and social media provide great opportunities for us to network and stay in touch online. While these tech-
nologies can offer a positive space for sharing information and ideas, they also have the potential to cause harm to
individuals, groups or even whole communities.
Just as you would discourage your child from acting inappropriately online, it’s important to remember that sometimes,
negative comments posted about a school community by parents or caregivers can have a bigger impact than
expected. Reputations of staff, schools and even parents can be damaged.
Whenever you’re online, you are potentially speaking to an unlimited audience, even if you think your conversations
are private. Taking a few moments to think about the content you post could save upset, embarrassment - and even
possible legal action or police involvement.
Parental and community feedback is important for schools. If you have a concern, complaint or enquiry about an issue
at school, the best approach is to speak directly to us, rather than discussing it in a public forum. If you are worried
about online content involving the school community, contact the principal.
If you are posting online, remember that your comments help build and support the school community. Make sure
you’re honest, respectful, considerate - and a good role model for your children.
