IN MEMO RI AM:, , ,, , ,.----------- John Moore was a darlin' man. His

death last week-end deprived the community of one pf 'its finest members who down the years gave much of his time in the service of others. John was first and foremost a family man. He was a loving husband and father and his life was a happy one as that love was returned by his nearest and dearest. He has left behind a fitting monument to his memory in the family he reared, a monument that is more impressive than any carved stone or moulded metal. Many of the older residents will recall John as a dashing young athlete on the Lucan Soccer teams of the thirties. However his greatest contribution to Sports in Lucan came as Secretary of the Dodsboro United Football Club in the late fifties and early sixties. As he guided that team to greater and greater

heights in Junior Football his friends affectionately referred to himas Busby". He was very proud to be elected Chairman of the rejuvenated Dodsboro Club in recent times.

John was a great neighbour and was respect' ed and revered by all who knew him. He was without doubt one of the kind' es^and most human persons I have ever known. Yet he was very much a man s man. He saw the good in everyone he met and never failed to respect the dignity of even the most humble. The concern of all who knew him was obvious in his last days. At his funeral, one sensed the feel-iin9+0no 0SA ex!?erienced by a lovin9 community as they gathered to say a last Good-bye . J

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

The Cooper and Byrne Families would like to thank most gratefully : all those people who sympathised with us in our sad loss of the : late Sarah Cooper. To Fr. Coghlan and Fr. O'Herlihy, to Sister Rosario and her Choir for their beautiful singing during the Mass, to all those who sent Mass Cards and flowers, all her old friends in the Square, and other districts we are ever grateful. "ABANDON HOPE ALL YE THAT ENTER HERE" (DANTE 13th CENTURY).

This suggestion could well have been applied to institutions for the mentally ill built during the last century. Their stark architecture, their forbidding exterior of high walls and locked gates gave a visual impression of physical restraint and force in a place where all hope and understanding had been abandoned. The mental (psychiatric) hospitals of today bear no resemblance to this grim picture. While the external (and internal) appearances have vastly changed it is an un-

* happy fact that the age-old attitudes to mental hospitals add mental illness largely remain in the public mind. It is a pity.Suffering, physical or mental, is a fact of life; it always has been.

* Christ spent much of his public ministry combating sickness of many kinds and was alwyas close to it, never running away either from the leper who wished to be cleansed, the woman who was possessed, or the multitude who sought his compassion. To abandon the sick through a wrong mental attitude is to abandon Christ "who took our infirmities and bore our diseases". Respect, hope and understanding are qualities shown us by Christ.

Ed's note: Aspects of this matter will form a series of short articles.
