From Fr. Joe

“Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:43-45).

Hmmm … what about this “servant” thing? To be honest, that kind of life really isn’t very appealing. But it’s not so much about the kind of job you might have, as it is of the relationships that you have with other people; a servant’s greatest strength isn’t their ability to produce things, but their desire to serve others. The following story, based on an actual event at a Marriott hotel in Anaheim, CA, may help to shed some light on being a servant:

A room-service waiter at one of the Marriott hotels learned that the sister of one of the guests had just died. The waiter, named Charles, bought a sympathy card, had other night hotel staff members sign it, and gave it to the grieving guest along with a piece of hot apple pie. That so touched the guest that she wrote a letter to the president of the hotel chain:

“Mr. Marriott, I’ll never meet you. And I don’t need to meet you because I met Charles. I know what you stand for. I know what your values are. I want to assure you that as long as I live, I will stay at your hotels and tell my friends to stay at your hotels. That night I realized that you care more about me as a person than you do about the few dollars I spent at your hotel …”

Charles the room-service waiter wasn’t responding to his guest in accordance with any checklist or proce-dure. He simply treated her like a human being, giv-ing personal service based on his understanding of her needs. (from the book Turned On, by Roger Dow and Susan Cook, 1997)

As a disciple – a servant – of Jesus, could someone write such a letter relating how our service, as Catholics, touched their life? How the way we treated them would bring them to the Catholic Church, and they would tell their friends too? Now THAT’S evangelization! ------------------------------------

Last Saturday was the inaugural session of Potluck Theology. The food was great, the discussion was fruitful, and the event ended about 7:40 pm (the target was 7:30, but we were in the midst of discussing the an-swer to a question). We didn’t get to all of the questions submitted, so those not drawn from the basket will be in

the pool for next time. FYI – The next Potluck Theology will be Saturday, November 13th. With our Saturday evening Mass then being at 4:00 pm (for the months of November – March, the Sunday Anticipatory Mass starts at 4:00 pm) Potluck Theology will begin after Mass and end at 6:30 pm.

To give you an idea of what kinds of things are/can be discussed, the following are the questions that were pulled out of the basket:

What is purgatory? What is hell?

Who goes to purgatory?

Why do we confess our sins to a priest, when we can talk directly to God?

Is a baptismal sponsor supposed to help guide the child into adulthood? An example would be inguiding them with their future mate at age 40.

How is it possible for a man who was married tobecome a priest if his former wife has not passed on?

Is it recommended to abstain from eating meat every Friday throughout the year, not just during Lent?

And what were the answers? Well … you’ll have to come to Potluck Theology to hear the answers and the discussion of the questions.

A reminder that on All Souls’ Day, Tuesday, Nov. 2nd, we will in a special way remember all those who have died in this past year – i.e. since Nov. 1st, 2020. If you have a family member or dear close friend who has died since Nov. 1, 2020 and you want to remember them on All Souls’ Day, contact the parish office and give us their name and date of death. At the 7:00 pm Mass that day a candle will be lit in their honor and their name will be read aloud as we pray for them. After Mass you are wel-come to take that candle home with you and use it as a reminder to continue to pray for them. Only one candle will be lit for each person remembered, so if there are multiple households of the deceased person, please de-termine which will take the candle home. If no one takes a particular candle home, it will remain in the sanc-tuary through the month of November.

The bulletin article series “A Journey Through the Mass”, will hopefully begin in next week’s bulletin. (The day before writing this current article I was blessed to find a lot of the fall mushrooms my family calls “stumpers.” Well, that also involved cleaning and pro-cessing them, which meant I was up very late. So, I’m just too tired to have it be part of this week’s bulletin.

Have a blessed week.

Students and staff honored Our Lady with praying the rosary together. The older students taught the younger students how to count the rosary beads. Our older students serve as faithful mentors and wonderful examples to the younger students. The Rosary is a prayer group that is out of love for Our Lady and Her Son, Jesus.

Since 1967, the Catholic Church has recurrently called together a Synod of Bishops. This is a time when bishops from all over the world gather in Rome to “journey together” and discuss issues in the life of the Church. In the coming months, ahead of the 2023 Synod of Bishops, Pope Francis has invited all Catholics from around the world to come together to reflect on their experiences and share input on matters of faith and the Church.

In so doing, the Church will voice our dreams, inspire hope and trust, bind up wounds, weave together relationships, and learn from one another in order to better love God and neighbor. This input from around the world will then be compiled and shared for richer discussion at the Synod of Bishops. Your involvement is greatly desired. More information on how the Church asks you personally to participate will be available in the weeks and months to come.

To mark the beginning of this synodal process in our local Diocese of Gaylord, Bishop Hurley is celebrating the 5 p.m. Mass at St. Mary Cathedral on Saturday, October 16. All are invited to attend or view this Mass online at www.dioceseofgaylord.org.

Please join in praying that this synodal process will be fruitful and for widespread engagement throughout our diocese in the coming months.
