3) Bonnet Assembly Procedure

NOTE:

It is imperative that valve assembly workstation is clean and free of anything that could contaminate the grease such as metal shavings, dirt, rust, old paint, etc. Do not sand or deburr near workstation!

Refer to Appendix A for exploded assembly drawings with detailed BOMs. Step 1: Part Inspection and Preparation Check all parts for cleanliness. Check the bonnet body v-ring packing cavity for sharp edges or scratches that could damage seals and limit high pressure performance. Lightly coat the v-ring cavity and stem threads with anti-seize compound. Very lightly coat each v-ring with plug valve grease (Val-Tex #972 or #750). Step 2: V-Packing and Stem Assembly Assemble the v-packing onto the loose stem with the bronze junk ring going on first, followed by the PTFE male adaptor, then the PTFE V-rings and finally the bronze female adaptor ring. Be careful not to damage the v-rings when passing over the stem threads. Be sure that the concave side of the v-rings are facing towards the pointed end of the stem. Failure to do so will prevent sealing under pressure. While holding the pointed end, thread the stem into the v-packing gland side of the bonnet body. Gently push the v-ring stack into the bonnet body gland while threading the stem until it stops. As the v-packing must be preloaded a thin-walled tube is required to compress the v-packing to assist in the installation of the retaining ring. Step 3: Bonnet Hammer Union Nut and Hardware Assembly Slide the hammer union nut onto the bonnet body and secure with the external retaining ring. Apply thread sealant to the threads of the two grease fittings and tighten into the bonnet body with a hand wrench (2-3 turns passed hand tight). Drop the PTFE ball into the 3/8” tapped hole, followed by the installation of the thumb screw. Leave the thumb screw loose, as it is only for holding the position of the stem during operation. Step 4: Bonnet Cover, Indicator & Hand Wheel Assembly Fasten the bonnet cover to the bonnet with the split washers and socket head cap screws. Slide the choke position indicator over the stem with the set screw end facing away from the pointed end of the stem. Leave the indicator set screw loose. Install the hand wheel onto the stem and secure with the split washer and hex nut.

4) Choke Assembly & Set-up Procedure

Step 1: Choke Tee and Blast Joint Preparation Tighten the Autoclave (F5962C) plug assembly into the choke tee with a hand wrench. Install the spiral retaining ring onto the male necks of the choke tee and blast joint and slide the hammer union nuts in place. Insert the three slip segments into each hammer union nut so their retaining ring grooves are exposed on the backside of the nut. Roll the spiral retaining rings into segmented slip grooves.

Step 2: Blast Joint and Seat/Bean Installation Thread the male end (outlet) of the choke tee onto the blast joint. Use a large hammer to tighten the hammer union nut until it makes up tight and sounds solid. Apply anti-seize to the threads of the choke seat (adjustable choke) or choke bean (fixed choke) and slide it through the choke body. Use the choke seat/bean wrench (100-03-082) to tighten the seat/bean firmly against the interior shoulder of the choke extension ONLY AFTER TIGHTENING THE CHOKE EXTENSION. Step 3: Bonnet Installation (Adjustable Choke) Make sure the choke stem is in the full open position by turning the hand wheel counter clockwise until it stops. Failure to do so could result in stem tip damage during assembly. To install the bonnet assembly, thread the hammer union nut onto the female threads of the choke body opposite to the choke extension. Use a large hammer to tighten the hammer union nut until it makes up tight and sounds solid. Step 4: Indicator Positioning (Adjustable Choke) Turn the hand wheel clockwise until the stem is seated against the choke seat. Slide the indicator down the stem and align the zero with the bonnet cap notch. While holding the indicator at the zero position, tighten the set screw into the stem. The choke is now zeroed. Add a small amount of grease with a grease gun to the two fittings for smooth stem operation and optimum sealing. Fully open and close the stem and check for smooth operation. Note: the addition of grease to the packing will energize the v-rings and create a small amount of resistance when operating the hand wheel. Fixed Choke Caps Fixed chokes are capped using a conventional male blanking cap available with or without an Autoclave (F5962C) port.

5) Bonnet Disassembly/Rebuild Procedure

A choke is disassembled and cleaned to install a new packing kit, stem and seat or to simply conduct a visual inspection. It is considered good practice to disassemble and thoroughly clean all parts in an area separate from your assembly area. Keep your assembly area clean! Step 1: Rotate the hand wheel counter clockwise until it stops with the stem is in the full open position. Failure to do so could result in stem tip damage during disassembly. Break apart the bonnet assembly and choke extension at the hammer union connections. Step 2: Disassemble, fully clean all parts and check the body, stem and seat for excessive wear. Step 3: Replace worn parts and assemble as per the above procedure. NOTE: For optimum performance it is recommended that a new v-ring packing be installed each time the choke is assembled.

6) Maintenance

A strict policy of greasing a choke is required to ensure smooth operation. BRC Engineering suggests that chokes be greased before and after every job. BRC Engineering suggests the use of Val-Tex #972 or #750 grease. After use: Equipment should be disassembled and cleaned after each use to ensure a long life. Corrosive products left in a choke will greatly reduce its life.

7) Storage

Recommended shelf life storage (adjustable choke only): 0 to 6 months – nothing required 6 to 12 months – re-grease and full opening and closing of the stem. Making sure that operation is smooth and free of grinding or scraping. 12 or more months – Disassemble, clean, rebuild and test.
