Deconstruct/Reconstruct Structures
Joseph Proudfoot
Louise Bourgeois
Mind Map -‐ Deconstruct – To dismantle an object. -‐ Analyze (a text or a linguisGc or conceptual system) by deconstrucGon, typically in order to expose its hidden internal assumpGons hJp://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=definiGon+of+deconstruct&ie=UTF-‐8&oe=UTF-‐8&redir_esc=&ei=bcm0UNDpDOma1AXX8IDwDQ -‐ Reconstruct – Build or form an object a_er it has been damaged. -‐ To organize an object. hJp://www.thefreedicGonary.com/construct -‐ Structure – Construct or arrange according to plan; give a paJern or organizaGon to. -‐ The arrangement of and relaGons between the parts or elements of something complex. hJp://www.thefreedicGonary.com/structure
ArGst 1 – Allan Wexler The structure of this art work is closely linked to woodwork, as it shows the construcGon of the wood counterbalancing each other. There has to be a fair amount of weight on each side in order for this to stay up. 1. Does it look balanced? Yes this art work
does look very balanced as it has the weight of one side on the other, to help it stand up.
ArGst 2 – Filip Dujardin This art work is fascinaGng in the fact that the concrete is being supported by a single support beam coming from the other building, there are 3 floors and an extra tower all being supported by a smaller, thinner and weaker building. It looks like the original building has been knocked down and reconstructed in an uncomfortable shape. 1. Is there a design? There is a design to
this in the form of an upside down L-‐shape, which isn’t parGcularly unique but is unique in the fact that of its supporGve ability.
ArGst 3 – Vincent This art work has been constructed out of concrete and small support slabs so they don’t slip and jolt whilst moving, and the materials used are used for tradiGonal construcGon. 1. Does it serve a purpose? It
serves a purpose from the viewers perspecGve point of view, they could find this piece of work inspiraGonal and could work around this idea.
EvaluaGon Marbling 1. MulGple colors have been used in the process of the work, I put loads of different
colors in the tray that had water in it, put the piece of paper in and took it out, le_ the paper to dry, and the colors stood out and stayed on the paper.
2. The noGceable textures were that, small clumps of paint that had built up and formed in the water had stuck to the paper and formed this 3D look. The colors made the piece look dull and boring but there were the few bright spots that catches the eye.
3. The successful thing about the marbling piece was that it had made the 3D look, instead of it being 2D and plain.
4. The unsuccessful thing about my piece was that the colors make it look dull and boring, could have used some more colors to make it stand out and catch everyone’s eye.
5. Re-‐do the piece with more brighter colors, to make it stand out more, and probably make a larger piece.
Picture 1, before and a_er Edit Original Edit 1
Edit 2 Edit 3
Harry Bertoia – Monoprint Color – Only black was used in this print. Line – Straight lines, slightly curved from the middle. Shape – Small, not making any clear shapes. Texture – Irregular, giving the the appearance that they’re overlying one another and quite rough, grainy and ridged. Tone – Different pressures for the different shades of color.
Joan Hodgkiss – Etching Color – Colorful and vibrant, many different colors used in the process. Line -‐ Very smooth, not very sharp or ridged. Shape – A clear outline of a Dragonfly, with leaves in the background of the picture. Texture -‐ The overlapping of the leaves of other leaves, but the main subject is the Dragonfly, which overlaps everything and stands out. Tone – Different colors used on each sector of the Dragonfly, giving the vibrant colors, making it stand out more clearer.
LjaneJa – Collagraph Color – Its in the negaGve style. Line – Its quite clear, ghostly like, as it appears to come out from a different shape as you’re looking at you. Shape – You can see all the shapes on the houses, the windows, doors and the light that is on. Texture – Seems to be quite smudged, but quite smooth. Tone – NegaGve tone brings out the features that you wouldn’t have noGced if it were normal.
Mick Armson – Lino Color – NegaGve, black and white are the main colors in the picture. Line – Many different shapes are used, curved lines, lines to make out the waves in the sea. Shape -‐ You can clearly see all the different shapes that outline many different objects. Texture – It looks smooth because of the curved and straight lines. Tone – A docking port for the ships and boats, you can see the people that are ploJed around the picture.
Deconstruct & Reconstruct – Nicholas Kennedy SiJon
UnGtled. -‐ I like this piece of work because, its different, not every piece of art work is as different as this, I like SiJon’s style of art work. -‐ This photo was digitally changed, to distort the picture, to make a spiral shape in the middle. -‐ This image is of the Golden Gate Bridge, in San Francisco, California. I think the image is about, the heavy flow and movement of the cars, the spiral represents the circular movement of the wheels.
Nicholas Kennedy SiJon Twisted 1. -‐ I like this artwork because it doesn’t always follow the spiral shape throughout the whole picture, its only distorted in a part of the photo, so you can see what has changed to what it had looked like before. -‐ This photo was made digitally, SiJon took the picture and had distorted the image. -‐ I think its about everyday life and how things can be turned upside down in a mere maJer of minutes.
EvaluaGon How did you find it? – I found it very useful, it let me expand my ideas in Art and to see it from a different point of view as well as seeing a new style of Art I have never seen before. What techniques did you use? – I tried using the spiral illusion on the photo with using the scissors, like the picture on the le_, it turned out 3D, which made it look beJer. What was the most successful piece, and why? – I think my most successful piece was where I had used two pictures, cut them out equally and stuck them in order, they both had the scenery of being in the wood/forest.
We had to use nothing but Triangles in this piece, with different photos to come up with some strange and new.
Kurt SchwiJers
Das Unbild Color – There are many uses of different colors used in this piece, there is nothing that won’t catch your eye. Form – There are only 2D shapes in this picture, to the extent that some shapes are diagonal which slightly makes the shapes 3D. Line – It looks old and has the feel of the old era, the lines are mainly straight with a few curved lines to make up the shape. Shape – Texture – Tone –
Conflict Conflict is a serious disagreement or argument which both against one another, the two most common disagreement is between the sexes of men and women, whether women should have as equal rights as men nowadays and war is also a good representaGon of conflict, because they’re fighGng between two different religions.
Urs Fischer
This artwork by Urs Fischer is based on the idea of Conflict. This artwork is literally called “BOOOOOOOM!” As it ironically looks like an explosion has happened to make the hole in the wall.
Felix Schramm
This artwork by Felix Schramm also based on the idea of Conflict. This artwork is called “Omission” and looks like the a_ermath in a war zone and rubble has collapsed through a building.
End of Project EvaluaGon Ideas Q1) The theme I had chosen to work around was Conflict, the art of war. In my work, I had tried to get as close to actual conflict as I could, using people posing sGll life in stances that would look like they’re fighGng, looking at it in a physical sense, I had to stage the conflict, so the two parGcipants don’t get hurt. ArGst Research Q2) Urs Fischer was one arGst I looked at as his art work was unordinary and interesGng because, his piece called ‘BOOM’ ironically stages the installaGon of conflict, where the wall had been taken off and had a hole in it, made it look like an explosion. Materials and Techniques Q3) I used collages, photography and printmaking. I captured the image first and then done a printmaking of the image. Q4) I think the printmaking was the most successful because it allowed certain areas of the image to stand out. Final Outcome Q5) My final outcome was basic and not very imaginaGve. To improve on this I will make a larger scale of one of the printmaking images. The successful part of the final outcome was the print made images, they stood out on the paper.
Formal Elements Color Q6) A variety of colors were used in my project as sGcking to one color would have been boring and not imaginaGve, so I had to pick different colors to see which one made more impact. The colors I chose were not dull, many were bright and thought of happy colors. Texture and Shape Q7) In the Collage we had to make, shapes such as triangles, where we could only make an image using only triangles from one or two pictures. It stood out because it didn’t seem to make a normal picture, I tried to align some parts of the triangle to another to see if they connected, but didn’t work and thought it looked good and unordinary. Development/Improvements Q8) I would make a larger scale of the print made image, I would do one part of the image, then another, and then fit them all together so it would make a large image, based around my theme or conflict.
