Start using SketchUp Drawing simple 3D shapes When drawing shapes click to start the shape and click to end the shape (don’t drag). Select the Rectangle tool in the shape menu. Click, move mouse and click to draw a rectangle. Select the Push/Pull tool. Place the tool on top of the shape, drag upwards. Try the Push/Pull tool on the vertical faces, using the Orbit, Pan and Zoom tools to change the view of the cuboid. Notice how the Zoom Extents tool shows the whole drawing. Turning it into a House Draw a line from the midpoint on top of the cuboid. Use the Move tool to lift the line, creating a roof. Use the Orbit tool to rotate to check the roof from end on.

Choose the ‘Urban Planning Meters’ template.

Click ‘Start using SketchUp’ to begin.

Drawing simple 3D shapes

When drawing shapes click to start the shape and click to end the shape (don’t drag).

Select the Rectangle tool in the shape menu.

Click, move mouse and click to draw a rectangle.

Select the Push/Pull tool.

Place the tool on top of the shape, drag upwards.

Try the Push/Pull tool on the vertical faces, using the Orbit, Pan and Zoom tools to change the view of the cuboid.

Notice how the Zoom Extents tool shows the whole drawing.

Turning it into a House

Draw a line from the midpoint on top of the cuboid.

Use the Move tool to lift the line, creating a roof.

Use the Orbit tool to rotate to check the roof from end on.

Use the Rectangle tool to draw a rectangle.

Use the Push/Pull tool to create a 3D shape.

Use the Orbit, Pan and Zoom tools to change the view of the cuboid and the Zoom Extents tool to view the whole drawing.

Turning it into a House

Draw a line from the midpoint on top of the cuboid.

Use the Move tool to lift the line, creating a roof.

Use the Orbit tool to rotate to check the roof from end on.

Adding a Chimney

Draw the end of a chimney stack on the end of the roof. Make sure the vertical lines are blue and the horizontal is red. The result will be black lines. Now, push the chimney to make it 3D.

Push the foremost face back to put the chimney further onto the roof and Use the Eraser tool to delete the lines on the roof.

Getting Started and Drawing a House

Choose the ‘Urban Planning Meters’ template.

When drawing shapes click to start the shape and click to end the shape (don’t drag).

Use the Rectangle tool to draw a rectangle.

Use the Push/Pull tool to create a 3D shape.

Use the Orbit, Pan and Zoom tools to change the view of the cuboid.

Use the Zoom Extents tool to view the whole drawing.

Adding Other Features

Use the Rectangle and Push/Pull tools to add steps, doors and windows.

Adding a Chimney

Draw the end of a chimney stack on the end of the roof. Make sure the vertical lines are blue and the horizontal is red. The result will be black lines.

Push the chimney to make it 3D.

Push the foremost face back to put the chimney further onto the roof.

Delete the lines on the roof.

Can you draw chimneys to go on the stack?
