Welcome to the 2nd annual KSU Animal Sciences & Industry Family and Friends Reunion! The Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC) hopes you enjoy an eventful and fun-filled evening reconnecting with the KSU Animal Sciences family. Welcome home!

Craig Good Dr. Ken Odde President Department Head LMIC Animal Sciences & Industry The purpose of the AS&I Family & Friends Reunion is two-fold. It provides an annual opportunity for KSU Animal Sciences & Industry alumni and friends to reconnect with their collegiate classmates, faculty and staff. At the same time, reunion attendees are able to see and hear everything currently taking place within AS&I and across campus. The idea is to create excitement and a sense of belonging among our extended K-State AS&I family. The reunion also provides the perfect venue for the annual presentation of the Don L. Good Impact Award allowing each award winner an opportunity to interact with a large portion of the KSU AS&I family, including students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends. Given the influential nature of these award winners, this should provide a unique and memorable opportunity for every event attendee, every year.

Enjoy a special performance by “The Pride of Wildcat Land!” Dr. Frank Tracz is bringing 300+ members of the KSU Marching Band for a very special appearance at the Family & Friends Reunion. The KSU marching band is the reigning Sudler Trophy Award winner, which is given every two years to recognize the top marching band in the U.S. All of us can certainly agree that our marching band is a point of pride for every member of the K-State Nation. Be sure to be near the outdoor bowl located south of the Stout Center at 7:20 pm to see, hear and enjoy “the best band in the land!”

Join us for the WILDCAT WALK! Following the band’s performance, join us for a new Family & Friends tradition. The band will form an aisle for Reunion attendees to stroll through while being serenaded on their way into the Stout Center for the award ceremony. Led by Willie and the kids, this is a high-energy opportunity for our youngest to our most senior members of the KSU AS&I Family to bask in KSU pride! Following the WILDCAT WALK, band members will stay and enjoy premium meats and other delicious foods. Meanwhile, our AS&I family will be indoors celebrating Certified Angus Beef LLC as the 2016 Don L. Good Impact Award winner. Thank you to LMIC for sponsoring complimentary meals for the band. degree from Ag Econ and a Master’s degree from AS&I. A natural entertainer, Rusty has been singing for audiences since he was 11 years old. He started recording in 2006 and has shared the stage with legends such as David Frizzell, TG Sheppard, Sawyer Brown, Collin Raye, Joe Diffie and more.

Rierson hosts his own radio show called “Rusty Radio,” which airs every week on a number of stations throughout Kansas and Oklahoma. Rusty has also appeared on TV a number of times, including the Shotgun Red Variety Show and American Idol. Despite his success, Rusty remains a Kansas country boy at heart, which is evident through his music. Be sure to request a special song or two during this evening’s performance. The Jr Wildcat Barnyard will provide priceless entertainment for the youngest members of our AS&I family… and for the adults who watch them! All kids are invited to join us in the big tent on the east side of the grounds for

games, toys, prizes and big fun! This year’s barnyard features a couple of new attractions that are sure to be big hits! Do you have a youngster in your family who would like to take part in next year’s Kansas State Fair? If so, provide them a chance to qualify in our Pedal Tractor Pull competition. Maybe your boys and girls would rather just play in the dirt with one-of-a-kind farm toys? We have something for everyone who is a kid…or is maybe just a kid at heart!

Your children can experience the thrill of “committing” to a top-flight program just like today’s elite athletes. We will provide a protective cover for the signed letter/s for you to take home. Add this wonderful memento to your kids’ memory books along with last year’s letter. This year’s letter will be different but just as fun! Kids who sign an AS&I Letter-of-Intent will automatically be entered into a

drawing for KSU custom-painted Happy Toys. These very special KSU themed toys are displayed in the Stout Center sale ring. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to win a one-of-a kind KSU family keepsake!

Many of these KSU affiliates and their families are in attendance this evening and will be recognized during the award ceremony. Please stop by to congratulate our KSU alums who have so capably served on the CAB team over the years, and our other guests who are here to represent Certified Angus Beef, the American Angus Association® and the Kansas Angus Association. Don’t forget to express our deep appreciation to CAB® packing plant partner, National Beef, for supplying the CAB® strip loins for this evening’s beef entrée. The gift boxes are located on the west end of the Stout Center. Show your KSU Animal Sciences & Industry pride every day of the year by displaying these fun keepsakes in your home or office! Don L. Good Award Artist, Blair Buswell. This year, the

Livestock and Meat Industry Council contracted Blair Buswell to design and sculpt a bronze relief of the LMIC logo representing equine and the meat animal species as the focal point for the newly minted Don L. Good Impact Award. Buswell was chosen because of his ability to bring a sense of life to his work. He is

known for sculpting more than 85 busts for inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, as well as larger-than-life works in downtown Omaha, NE, and the National Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City. Among a number of other awards, Blair is the recipient of the James Earle Fraser Sculpture Award at the Prix de West art show held at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. Blair is a proud graduate of BYU and resides with his family in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

Don L. Good Impact Award Criteria Established in 2015 by the

Livestock and Meat Industry Council

The Don L. Good Impact Award is to be given to a person, persons or entity that has had a very positive impact on the livestock and meat industry and/or agriculture. This award could also be given to a person who has had a positive influence in educating and developing students to be great contributors to agriculture. The recipient might include someone who has had a large impact on agriculture via the media or the political arena. The Don L. Good Impact Award is intended to be given annually, provided the Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC) identifies a deserving individual or entity to receive the award. The committee recommends preference be given to people with Kansas State University ties, but does not limit the award to only KSU graduates. This award could cultivate relationships and links with others outside of our university. The KSU AS&I Family & Friends Reunion will be the venue at which the award will be presented. The awarding ceremony will be the highlight of the event. The physical award will be an item that may serve as a lasting legacy for the recipients and their families. The Stockman of the Year selection committee will have the adjunct duty of fielding nominees and making a recommendation to the LMIC Board of Directors for the annual Don L. Good Impact Award recipient. The full LMIC Board will vote on the recommendation and a two-thirds majority of the directors present is required for affirmation.

Certified Angus Beef LLC 2016 Don L. Good Impact Award Recipient

Barbed wire changed the beef industry. Vast plains were fenced and cattle were corralled allowing innovations in grazing, feeding and marketing strategies. Refrigerated rail cars, large-scale grain feeding and boxed beef had similar, monumental effects. Arguably, the Certified Angus Beef (CAB®) brand belongs on this list. The world’s most

successful branded beef program currently marks nearly four decades of leadership in the beef business. In the mid-1970s the future was dim for consumers who had grown up eating high-quality beef. Communication between producers and consumers was non-existent. Economic pressures, combined with the lowering of USDA beef quality grade standards in 1976 resulted in too much variability in the Choice grade. The development of the CAB® brand, based on high-quality carcass characteristics that would stand the test of time was initiated to reduce variability and reassure customers they were getting the best beef available. In 1978, the first CAB® packer was licensed and the first pound of product was sold. A brand was born that would point consumers toward high quality, consistent beef while using market forces to guide producers toward favorable genetics and management. Not without its trials, the CAB® brand was many years in the making. Before CAB could achieve today’s marketing network of more than 17,500 licensed partners in 52 countries, it had to convince USDA to reconsider a sudden action in 1978 that nearly killed the brand. Two weeks after selling the first pound of CAB® product on October 18, 1978, USDA confiscated the carcass roll it had approved earlier that year. A week later, Dr. Jerry Lipsey, who earned his PhD in meat science at KSU and was serving as a divisional director at the American Angus Association, called on Dr. Mike May, fellow KSU meat science PhD graduate, who was serving as USDA Standardizations Branch Chief. They in turn, contacted attorney, Lee Badger. Lipsey and Badger went with

13

CAB executive director Mick Colvin and Angus executive secretary C.K. Allen to meetings in Washington D.C. where they argued that USDA rules stipulated the agency had a legal obligation to help producers monitor this science-based branded beef program. The arguments worked and CAB was back in business. Another K-State graduate was among the first members of the CAB executive team. Mary Ferguson, returned to her home state of Ohio, where she rose to second in command as associate executive director before leaving in the late 1990s to raise registered Angus with husband, Mike Colvin, near Luray, KS. CAB was reinvigorated in 1998-99 by an infusion of K-State connections. Dr. Jim Riemann, meat scientist and Cargill executive, was hired to lead the brand after founding director Mick Colvin retired. Twenty-five-year KSU Beef Extension veteran Dr. Larry Corah was hired as vice president for supply development. Larry worked from an office in Manhattan, KS, with staff closely associated with KSU. Industry Information Director, Steve Suther, and Feeder-Packer Relations assistant directors, John Stika and Bryce Schumann, all hold post-graduate degrees from K-State. Stika went on to hold three director positions before being named vice president; and since 2006, President of the Certified Angus Beef® brand. Dozens more KSU graduates have contributed across the company as employees and interns. In fiscal 2015, the Certified Angus Beef ® brand reported record sales for the ninth consecutive year, marketing 896 million pounds of product. It’s also the 11th straight time the brand’s network of licensees achieved year-over-year growth. The 1.6 percent increase represents an additional 14 million pounds of product. The brand’s global partners generate an estimated $6.9 billion in consumer sales annually. CAB’s original mission statement remains in place today: Increase demand for registered Angus cattle through a specification based branded beef program to identify consistent, high quality beef with superior taste.

Kelly and Marcie Lechtenberg & Family

The Lechtenberg Family are proud supporters of K-State’s missions. The family’s passion for KSU began when Kelly entered Vet school in 1983 while Marcie was teaching at Riley County High School. Marcie earned her M.S in Speech Communication while Kelly completed his Veterinarian training. Cooperation between the Colleges of Ag and Vet Med allowed Kelly to complete simultaneous DVM and PhD programs. Kelly’s educational background was critical to founding companies in Nebraska and Kansas that provide research services for the development and regulatory approval of safe and efficacious products for beef and dairy cattle, swine, sheep, goats and chickens. Family operations in Nebraska and Kansas include a commercial feedlot, stocker grazing un it, iso-wean swine unit and crop production (corn & soybeans). The Lechtenberg daughters and their husbands are also K-Staters. Jana and husband Drew Biery teach and coach at Wamego and Junction City. Brooke and Charley Cull reside in Manhattan, where Charley (DVM, PhD) serves as a research scientist and Brooke is a PhD candidate in Human Ecology. Youngest daughter, Dr. Paige recently opened TimberCreek Veterinary Hospital on the east side of Manhattan. Her husband, Max Andersen (KSU AS&I) manages ranching operations for the family east of Manhattan. Marcie earned her PhD in Human Ecology in 2014 and is an instructor in the KSU Marriage & Family Therapy Unit. Kelly serves on both the KSU Foundation and LMIC Boards. He was selected as the 2005 KSU Vet Med Alumni Fellow. The Lechtenberg family holds 18 KSU degrees. More will likely follow as two grandsons, Jackson & Carter, can already be seen wearing a lot of purple!
