Summer Driving TipsHigh temperatures and longer journeys put extra demands on your car, but some planning and preparation before you set out should ensure your car runs smoothly this summer. Take a look at these summer driving tips:

Plan your journey Ensure you pack a road map and plan your route before you start driving. Think about where you are travelling and what extra equipment you might need.

Tyre pressure Ensure your tyres are neither over nor under inflated. Adjust the tyre pressure if necessary depending on the amount of weight you may be carrying.

Tyre tread and condition Summer temperatures heat up tyres and can aggravate any existing damage to the rubber so check you have the legal tyre tread depth and look out for any existing damage that may need attention. For more tyre advice visit www.arnoldclark.com

Engine oil and coolant levels Ensure these are topped up to maintain the condition of your engine. At Arnold Clark we will top these up for free if you vehicle is between its scheduled service periods.

Check lights It is essential that you check all lights including brake lights to ensure they are working and clear of dirt, which may make them hard to see by other road users.

Check fluid levels Do not fill your fuel tank to the brim as heat expansion during the summer months could cause a fuel leak.

In all seasons, it is important that you carry an emergency kit in your vehicle, including; torch, water, high visibility vest and blankets.

Preparation before you go:• Check the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) travel abroad pages for the country you are visiting www.gov.uk• Register with the FCO’s LOCATE service so they can get in touch with you in the event of an emergency.• Don’t go anywhere without travel insurance (both for you and your vehicle, you may need to let your vehicle insurance provider know if you are leaving the UK). • Make sure your driving licence is current and valid. Ensure you are aware of the driving laws in the country you are visiting. • Take photocopies of your passport, driving licence (both parts), insurance certificate and other important documents and keep these separate from the originals.
