Origin and use2PH Seedless Eureka Lemon was developed by the 2PH Farm’s mutation breeding programme in Emerald, Queensland, Australia and is Australia’s first truly seedless lemon variety.
Due to its unique characteristics, 2PH Seedless Eureka Lemon is a novel, high quality citrus variety that can be differentiated by the trade and identified by the consumer. In terms of consumption, 2PH Seedless Eureka Lemon has excellent potential in the food service industry for supply to restaurants and cocktail bars, as well as a convenient alternative to conventional lemons.
Fruit Characteristics 2PH Seedless Eureka Lemon trees under Queensland growing conditions has shown higher flowering potential than the standard Eureka lemon, and can flower up to four flower sets per year. Fruit set has also been very good with trees up to eight years old cropping higher yields that the standard Eureka Lemon.
Fruit size is similar to that of Eureka lemon under the same crop load.
Time of maturity is slightly earlier than that of the standard Eureka lemon by two to three weeks, with two main bearing peaks.
2PH Seedless Eureka Lemon fruit have higher juice content than the standard Eureka Lemon and are totally seedless.
Tree characteristics2PH Seedless Eureka Lemon trees have a similar growth habit to that of Eureka lemon but are more vigorous.
2PH Seedless Eureka Lemon trees are incompatible with most trifoliate hybrid rootstocks, such as the citranges (Carrizo, Troyer and C35) and Swingle citrumelo.
Climate requirementsThe variety has to date has only been commercially grown and produced in citrus areas of Queensland and should also be suited in other premium fresh fruit production regions of Australia where the Standard Eureka lemon is currently grown and produced.
• The seedless lemon is considered the holy grail of the lemon industry. Because lemons are largely consumed by squeezing the fresh fruit over seafood, desserts or as flavouring for beverages among other uses, consumers have a preference not to have lemon pips in their food or drink.
