News from the Nurse’s Office This is the season where our school nurse is seeing lots of kids coming in with allergy symptoms. Here are some helpful tips and common questions to educate
students, staff and parents that may help decrease your
allergen exposure and identify symptoms and treatment.
Seasonal allergic rhinitis, spring allergies, is one of the most common
conditions in the US and affects at least 10% of the people.
Q: My family likes to take spring and summer vacations, traveling by car, what tips are there for aller-gies?
Be prepared to treat or prevent allergy symptoms by having medications available and starting preventa-tive medications before you leave. Close your windows and use the car air conditioner to help keep out pollen and mold spores. Outdoor air pollution can worsen allergy symptoms; to avoid this, plan biking or hiking in the early morning or at night when the air quality is better. Consider asking changing hotel rooms if allergy symptoms worsen as soon as you step in.
Q: How can I find out what the pollen levels are in my area?
The National Allergy Bureau (NAB) has approx. 75 certified pollen counting stations throughout the US; consult their website: www.aaaai.org/nab. The NAB currently provides the most accurate and reliable pollen and mold counts by using air sampling equipment to collect airborne pollen and spores. The city of Houston is the closest pollen counting station in our area. They share pollen counts with the newspaper and TV stations.
Q: When does the spring allergy season end?
Allergy seasons vary significantly. In general terms, early spring is the time for tree pollens. Grass pollen is usually present in the late spring, early summer and weed pollens are present in the late sum-mer and early fall. In the Houston areas, it might last for 10 months.
