COUNSELING AND DEVELOPMENT (MACD) A BRANCH OF ACA
“SERVING THE COUNSELING, GUIDANCE, AND
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONS”
A Message from the President: Have you checked out the new ACA website (www.counseling.org)? With a fresh look and fresh vision, the national organization of MACD is highlighting the need to Support our members and clients, offer Guidance to those in need, and to Illuminate and make transparent information in our field. We embrace this at the state level as well as we too want to make it our vision to Support, Guide, and Illuminate counselors and educators across the state of Maryland. Much of what we do within MACD is to support you in your work via our conferences and workshops. Thus far we have offered an annual conference with a variety of topics around the impact of modern life on mental health and a multicultural workshop around the impact of cultural sensitivity and interventions on mental health.
We are looking forward to our next three workshops as well to support your counseling needs around helping clients get unstuck by moving through change (March); navigating Maryland’s workforce, employers, and careers; and poetry and art in counseling (April). MACD also wants to be a source of guidance for you and be responsive to your needs in the field. With the support of ACA, we encourage you to reach out to the executive committee and see what resources we can offer you continuing education, counselor identity, social media, ethics, CACREP, military, and volunteering. Finally, MACD also embraces the concept of illumination in that we want to highlight current events and trends in the counseling field via our newsletters and trainings so we encourage you to be an active member of MACD so you stay informed of both state and national happenings. For example, are you aware of the DSM-V edition being released in May, the most common ethical compliant is around confidentiality, the HITECH regulations from the “Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act” that impacts how we use technology in our counseling work? As the President of MACD, I invite you to contact me ([email protected]) and see how MACD can practice within the vision of Support/Guidance/Illumination so that MACD can better meet your counseling needs across the state of Maryland and with ACA leadership.
Thank you! Marsha Boveja Riggio, Ph.D., LPC, NCC

Thanks For Coming…. Hope you were able to attend our February 2013 workshop titled, “Impact of Cultural Sensitivity and Interventions on Mental Health...Within an Educational Context.” We had over 80 individuals in attendance who took advantage of hearing from renowned speakers while also learning about ways we can improve our practice within a cultural context. Dr. Clemmont Vontress, Professor Emeritus of Counseling at George Washington University served as the opening speaker and spoke about “My Professional Retrospective” based on his significant research around cross-cultural counseling, existential counseling, and traditional healing. We also had three phenomenal speakers that day. First was the topic of “Evidence-Based Multicultural Clinical Interventions in Counseling” by Dr. Aaron Stills, Chair and Professor of counseling psychology at Howard University, and founding President of the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD). Next, we had the topic of “Broaching Behavior in Counseling and Educational Contexts” by Dr. Norma Day-Vines, Professor of Counseling and Human Services at Johns Hopkins University who has numerous publications and presentations on counseling strategies for working more effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse children and adolescents. The last topic was on, “Are YOU Skating on Thin Ice? Exploring Law and Ethics in Counseling Children, Adolescents and Families in a Culturally Sensitive Manner” by Anne Marie "Nancy" Wheeler, JD, American Counseling Association Coordinator of the Risk Management Helpline and national presenter on health care malpractice, risk management, privacy and managed care. Dr. Frederic Bemak served as our closing speaker and he spoke on, “Multicultural Counseling and Social Justice: Successes, Concerns, and Challenges for 2013” based on his work as Professor of Counseling and Development at George Mason University and the Director of the Diversity Research and Action Center. Thank you to those who attended and embraced the lessons on how we can stay mindful of being culturally sensitive in our mental health work, particularly when working within an educational context.

Counselor’s Hall of Fame:
Bradley T. Erford, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, LPC, LP, LSP, graduated from the University of Virginia with a Ph.D. in counselor education. He is the 2012-2013 President of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and a professor in the school counseling program of the Education Specialties Department in the School of Education at Loyola University Maryland. He has authored or edited more than 15 books. His research specialization falls primarily in development and technical analysis of psycho-educational tests and outcomes research and has resulted in the publication of more than 60 refereed journal articles, 100 book chapters, and 15 published tests. He has received numerous awards for his scholarship and service to the counseling profession from ACA and the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling (AARC), organizations within which he has held numerous leadership positions.
MACD provided an opportunity for me to grow as a professional servant and leader. Much of what I know about leadership today, I learned from those early experiences in MACD. I am a past president of the Maryland Association for Counseling and Development (MACD) and three divisions: Maryland Association for Measurement and Evaluation (MAME); Maryland Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (MACES); and Maryland Association for Mental Health Counselors (MAMHC). These leadership development opportunities helped me to expand my service mission at the national level as chair of the ACA – Southern Region, national division president of AACE, and as the chair of many ACA committees and task forces, before being elected to the ACA Governing Council, and eventually President of ACA.
Courtney E. Gasser, Ph.D., is a counseling psychologist licensed in the state of Maryland as well as a nationally certified counselor. She received her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in counseling psychology from Iowa State University, and now enjoys teaching and mentoring graduate counseling students and undergraduate psychology students as
a faculty member at the University of Baltimore. Dr. Gasser's research focus is in vocational psychology, which involves examining constructs such as personality, career interests, and self-efficacy. Recently, her work has focused on helping adult students in career transition. In addition, Dr. Gasser has provided career counseling and assessment to a variety of populations, from high school students to adults. Organizations like MACD help facilitate the work of career counseling professionals by providing support and training as well as disseminating knowledge for best practices.
Ralph L. Piedmont received his Ph.D. in Personality Psychology from Boston
University in 1989. He then did a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the National
Institute on Aging which focused on the Five-Factor Model of Personality and its
application in a number of clinical and applied contexts. This work serves as an
organizing paradigm for his research on spirituality and its assessment. Currently,
Ralph is Professor of Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University Maryland and serves as the department’s Director of the Doctoral Program. Ralph is involved in
training counselor educators in assessment, research methodology, and statistics.
He has developed a motivational measure of spirituality, the Assessment of
Spirituality and Religious Sentiments (ASPIRES) which has been shown to be a
significant predictor of a wide range of psychosocial outcomes across a variety of
cultures and faith orientations. Ralph is the Founding Editor of Psychology of
Religion and Spirituality which is published by the American Psychological Association. Ralph is also the co-editor of
the annual serial publication, Research in the Social Scientific Study of Religion, which is published by Brill, as well as being on the editorial board of several journals, including Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and
Development. Ralph also is the conference director for the annual Mid-Year Conference on Religion and Spirituality.
This event, held at Loyola University Maryland’s Columbia campus, is a professional conference addressing research
and clinical issues associated with religious and spiritual issues in the social sciences. Ralph also served as president
of the Maryland Association for Measurement and Evaluation (MAME). MAME serves an essential role in keeping
counselors current on trends and findings in the areas assessment, clinical assessment techniques, and quantitative
evaluation methods. Ralph joined MACD back in the early 1990s when he first arrived at Loyola. It was, and is, a very helpful way to become part of the local counseling world. It is a great place for making professional connections
and in both advancing and advocating for the field on the state level. Ralph has published over 100 professional
research articles, book chapters, and books in the areas of personality assessment and spirituality and has presented
nationally and internationally on these topics. For more information about Ralph and his work visit his web-site at:
