sourced. Many of us have owned them or still own them. Our company makes a great deal of parts for them as well.”

Otto knew right away that Led Sled was the per-fect accomplice, too. “Pat’s preferred platform is the Sportster so it only makes sense we should partner with him to host a show at the Chip,” he said.

And though this is Biltwell’s rst time at the Bu alo Chip, it wasn’t a hasty or unfounded deci-sion. Said Otto, “We’ve learned that it’s important to wisely choose who you partner with and there really isn’t a better place to party than the Chip. e Chip has it all: bikes, bands, booze!” Other collaborators include Street Chopper, S&S Cycle, Rusty Butcher and Chop Cult.

It’s super easy to participate in the Sportster Showdown: Ride in at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, register for free, and enjoy all the CrossRoads has to o er until awards are announced at 5. Celebrate your win or drown your sorrows with 2-for-1 Rebel Yell Happy Hour, then stay for the after party and rock the night with Mother-ship and 2-for-1 Pabst at the Chip’s Bikini Beach. (Campground admission pass required for con-certs and after party.)

You gotta love the show’s compact time-frame

and focus on fun. It’s a genuine, laid back, grass-roots sort of day you don’t want to miss. Come on out and celebrate the Sportster!

SCHEDULE

Every August when throngs of bikers from around the

globe converge on the small Black Hills town of Stur-gis, SD, each one of them leaves with a story. Sto-ries of winding roads, wild parties,  wicked stunts  and wonderful people they carry with them for life. Now thanks to a deal between the HomeSlice Group and Snapchat, these stories will be assembled in one place on one day to be experienced by millions of people the world over.

How is this possible, you ask? On Monday, August 8, via Snapchat’s Live Story feature, every Snapchatter in Sturgis and the surrounding area can submit photos and short video clips which will potentially be added to the overall Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Live story. at means Snap-chat’s over 100 million daily active viewers can see the Mecca of motorcycling through your eyes, as well as the eyes of fellow bikers, bands, entertain-ers and concert venues.

So how can you contribute to this story? It’s easy. First, download Snapchat on your smart phone, open it and create an account. is is sim-ple and only takes a few moments.

You’ll then have to con rm your account, either by entering a 6-digit number that will be sent via SMS message to your phone, or via email. After that, you’re ready to start snapping!

Once you’ve taken a photo or video, a blue arrow will appear in the bottom right corner. Tap it then you’re one step away from adding your

Snap to the Snapchat Live Story! If you’re in the area today, Monday, August 8

with the location feature activated on your phone, your screen should look something like this. Tap “Sturgis Motorcycle Rally,” tap the blue arrow that will then appear at the bottom of your screen, and you will have submitted your snap to the Live Story! at’s it! e only is your imagination.

So Snapchat from the Chip and show people around the globe why this is the best place to enjoy the best motorcycle rally on earth.

SHOW THE WORLD HOW THE CHIP RALLIESSnapchat’s Sturgis Live Story is today!

We’ve talked to Pat before for this paper and it’s always entertaining. He’s back at the Chip as a partner in Biltwell’s Sportster Showdown tomorrow, so it was time to check in again.

SRD: You’re known as the Sportster guy. Whose work has in uenced you?

PP: I had always tinkered with my own bike, a ‘93 Sportster. I never realized Sportsters were gonna be popular bikes down the road; they de -nitely weren’t popular then.

When I started working on my ’93, Arlen Ness was one of the biggest guys on the scene, so he was the rst dude who was gonna in uence a novice like me.

at was such an interesting time to get involved, ‘cause I got to see guys like Aaron Green from Paramount, Billy Lane and Jeese

James when no one was fancy or a superstar. ey were just dudes that built bikes. It was before all the TV stu . I’m thankful I got to start in that era cause I got to see them when they were just normal dudes like me, hanging out at the bar.

SRD: And it’s been almost 15 years for you now.PP: I started the shop when I was super broke

so I gured I couldn’t make any mistakes. I was already broke! But I felt like I was doing some-thing I needed to be doing.

All I really did was turn my life into my work. When I started out I’d drive a truck during the week and go to the Smoke Out over the week-end. I still do those same kinds of things.

SRD: Looking at old pictures of the Chip from the ‘80s, there are lots of Sportsters.

PP: Yeah, some of the coolest bikes from those times are the Diggers Ness built and a majority of them were Ironheads.

SRD: When did you rst come to Sturgis?PP: You know, this is my 18th year at Stur-

gis, I started going in 1998. It’s so weird to think about it. We got a Penske and took the gover-nor o so we could go 80. We put a fridge in it, a home stereo, a hammock and a futon. An old-school dude told us to camp in Nemo. We started out with seven gallons of tequila.

We’d get wasted in town and take that gravel road through Vanocker Canyon on our Sport-sters, with potholes and all that mess, and one night after a torrential downpour. It was freaky

Don’t just sit there! Get busy making your campsite a contender in the rst-ever Block Party Challenge. Today is Neigh-

borhood Pride Day and the Bu alo Chip will be rewarding the weirdest, wildest and most creative campers for making their space a welcome and cov-eted party palace. Use your imagination to decorate your campsite, and then reach out to neighbors and passers by. You’ll make new friends by the dozens!

Be forewarned: some campers planned this thing way far ahead of arrival so there might be a few ringers with a solid game plan in place. Even if you don’t have a prayer of winning, there’s no harm in keeping your site picked up a bit, right? After all, nobody likes to party with a slob!

Winners will be named in three categories and stand to win a giant Bu alo Chip Goodie basket and a one-of-a-kind ag to y over your winning site as bragging rights.

Categories are: e Crazy George Award: Most Imaginative.

ink outside the box! e Miss Chippie Award: Most Exciting and

Fun. Show the world your wild side!Woody’s Choice: Most Beautiful and Friendly.

Create your own little piece of heaven!

Our judges are stealthy, so you better get on it now. Also, watch for the Chip’s photographers who are scouting the grounds and taking snaps of every hearty party group they can nd. Win or lose, your campsite could make it into our photo spread later in the week so, as the penguin leader in Madagas-car said, “ Smile and wave, boys! Smile and wave!”

but it was cool. at rst year at Sturgis was the coolest year ever.

SRD: So this year Led Sled is set up at the Chip where Biltwell’s having their Sportster Showdown on Tuesday. How’d you start working with them?

PP: We had not been knowing each other for a long time. So I think it was in 2014, I just decided

to go on the El Diablo Run. It was the worst time to leave the shop: we had just been asked to do the Hot Bike Tour, Harley gave us an engine – I mean there was so much going on. I didn’t have time to go ride for a week, but I had to do it. I think they appreciated that. And that’s how we became friends, by hanging out. Once you con-nect as friends and build a relationship you start

doing good things together in business.

SRD: What’s new for Led Sled?PP: Well, I bought a barn! It’s been there since

the late 1800s and I’ve passed it since I was a kid. My buddies and I used to climb a tree and sneak into that barn when we were little kids. It was like our clubhouse. I’m xing it up as a venue for peo-ple to rent for events.

SRD: Is it near your shop?PP: It’s right down the street. You know, it’s

kind of cool that everything I’m doing is all in the neighborhood I grew up in. So the other day I was showing a buddy around the barn and we found a box tucked up on a beam. When I brushed o the top it said “King’s Island” on the lid, and it had pennies and nickels inside. Here it was, a box I’d put up there when I was little! And it was sitting there all this time…

SRD: at’s pretty crazy! Sounds like you’re hav-ing fun with it.

PP: I enjoy remodeling and it’s just another fun thing to design. I’m gonna keep that rustic look about it and just make it functional. I mean, dude, can you imagine having an invitational bike show around the barn? at’d be so cool!

The sport of motorcycling has witnessed considerable changes over the years. Not only have the bikes and attitudes changed,

but the act of riding itself has been transforma-tional for many. is year, the eighth annual Stur-gis Bu alo Chip’s Biker Belles event, a day of real riders, real stories and real passion, features a sym-posium titled “Two-Wheeled Transformation,” exploring the role the motorcycle plays in trans-forming lives. (See Page 7)

Biker Belles was created to raise awareness of the passion, diversity and spirit of women in motor-cycling and to raise funds for worthy charities. In

addition to the symposium, it includes a scenic ride through the Black Hills, a Comfort Zone, plus food and camaraderie. Riders gather to begin the day at the Bu alo Chip CrossRoads tomorrow morning, Tuesday, August 9.

A new, strongly emerging women’s motorcycle

culture, signaled by an increase in women’s riding communities and causes, has gained an unprece-dented amount of momentum in recent years. e long-standing legacy of the Biker Belles welcomes this increased attention. Men and women, riders and non-riders, are welcome to join this gathering

of mentorship and sharing. “When we created the Biker Belles ride in 2009,

we hoped it would change people’s lives for the bet-ter,” said program coordinator Toni Woodru . “It’s amazing to see nearly a decade later how much it truly has. e ride represents many positive ele-ments of the motorcycle community — encour-agement, empowerment, mentorship and char-ity. Each year this group has inspired amazing and unexpected connections among participants and the community as a whole. I hope you will join us on the journey.”

Participants are asked to make a $60 contribu-tion to join the festivities, 100 percent of which directly bene ts Helping with Horsepower and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. Visit BikerBelles.com or call 605-347-9000. Add this one to the roster. You’ll be glad you did.

TRANSPORTATION TRANSFORMATIONSince the beginning, a pivotal part of the Biker

Belles event has been the exchange of ideas and experiences among the participants. e

2016 theme of the Biker Belles symposium is “Two-Wheeled Transformation” and, as in prior years, it provides a forum for women in the motorcycle industry to share their trials and triumphs. Mod-erated by motorcycle industry chronicler Marilyn Stemp, this year’s panel features a team of leading industry women whose youth and enthusiasm belie their wealth of experience and knowledge.

Leticia Cline has been riding since her dad put her on a bike at the age of 4. Her career has spanned modeling, working as a commentator for TNA Wrestling, and reality TV. As a lifelong rider, Leti-cia’s most surprising motorcycle-related transforma-tion may have been when she started an all-female riding group — it was so unique to her years of riding without gender bias. Now the Iron Lilies, a central Florida-based group of self-described mis- ts and standouts, are making an impact as they communicate their uniqueness via riding, not only inspiring change but bringing it about through their actions.

e National Marketing Manager for BMW

Motorrad, Sarah Schilke seems like a person in exactly the right place. As a long-term and passionate motorcyclist with experience riding o -road, adventure, track and street, her prior career a liations include Schuberth and Hein Gericke. Sarah has connections to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, the American Motorcyclist Association (a lifetime member), and the Interna-tional Motorcycling Federation. She was chosen as the rst female member of the Board of Directors of the Motorcycle Industry Council.

In 2008 at age 14, Karlee Cobb became the youngest person to set

a land speed record at the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats, and she hasn’t stopped since. A self-described animal freak, she also professes a love of Buell motorcycles, and says she likes the mental and physical challenge of LSR racing. As a born and bred gearhead, she has been undoubtedly in uenced by her mother, Laura Klock, and the entire crew at Klock Werks where she’s grateful to be learning more about the industry every day. It’s not just her work, it’s how she plans to spend her

entire life. ere’s no reigning in the joy and intensity of

Jody Perewitz. Running the shop Cycle Fabrication with her father Dave was her life’s natural progres-sion, and entirely appropriate. It’s simply where she grew up and where she continues to live happily. e motorcycle industry and motorcycle people are second nature to her. ough Jody was infected by the gearhead bug at an early age, she was also blessed with the feisty spirit to get involved and stay involved on many levels, two wheels and four.

Come meet these fabulous women and share your story, too. You’re bound to feel renewed and inspired.
