Handout: Discovering Pythagoras
Right triangles are special, they have  certain properties that make them so,  which will learn more about today.
What do we already know about right  triangles?

On the given dot paper, sketch a right  triangle with the given leg lengths: Leg 1 = 1  unit and Leg 2 = 1 unit.
Then draw a square on  each side of the triangle.  Show your sketch to a  neighbor to see if you  agree.
Use the dot paper to create 3 other right  triangles (with differing leg lengths) and  study the relationship between their areas.

A conjecture is a generalization about a pattern  you think might be true, but that you do not yet  know for sure is true.
Look at your completed table and state a pattern  that you see.
Make a conjecture about the areas of squares that  are drawn on the sides of any right triangle. Write  it down and then share it with your tablemates.

The scarecrow gets a brain...?
The sum of the square roots of any  two sides of an isosceles triangle is  equal to the square root of the  remaining side.

Is a triangle with leg lengths 3 and  7, and a hypotenuse of radical 56  a right triangle?
