Happy New Year everyone. I trust you all had a fabulous festive season and are already well on your way towards breaking those new year resolutions. Unless of course you had promised yourself to have even more fun and friendship in Circle. If that’s the case, all I can say is Keep Calm and Carry On!

As ever, I’ve got an action-packed 3 Cheers for you with even more pages than the Circler magazine! Speaking of which, wasn’t it great to see so much Area 3 news in the national mag. Area 3 is definitely the place to be!

Thank you so much to everyone that sends me articles and photos. We wouldn’t have a magazine without you and if you keep sharing your great ideas for fundraisers, social events and membership drives, we can all benefit and Area 3 can get even bigger and better!

It’s that time of year again where we need some more fantastic Circlers to join the fun on the Area 3 Exec. We don’t need a secretary or treasurer this time but all the other posts are up for grabs. If you enjoy Circle, you’ll love Exec and you know it’s going to be fun with Mrs Machon at the helm!

Remember to share 3 Cheers with all your friends - especially those who aren’t in Circle yet. It’s easy to do via facebook or email.

Keep having fun and spread the word!

Yours in Friendship

Welcome...

Happy New Year to you all! I hope 2012 brings us all another exciting Circling year. The last few months have been a case of

KEEP CALMAND

HAVE LOTS OF FUN

while getting out and about, fundraising, meeting the stars, helping with community events and catching up with old friends and making new ones too.

So are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin…

The Area Meeting on the 17th October had a theme of 'Heroes' and the 11 Circles who came wore a variety of fancy dress ranging from a couple of Emmerline Pankhursts, a Robin Hood and Elvis, (who won the fancy dress prize in her 'onsie'). There were also lots of people who had forced themselves to eat Heroes chocolates and use the wrappers as decoration! After the meeting, Helen Shiggins tested us with a quiz and ………won The Non Sporting Trophy.

The theme of the meeting was also very poignant, as Helen Kitson had asked Circlers to bring their Shoeboxes For Soldiers too. The response was absolutely amazing with a fantastic 68 shoeboxes being sent to the soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment and, I know, from an email received from a fellow Circler (which you can read later in the magazine), they are very much appreciated so thank you very much for your support and kindness.

My next event was more of a dressing down than dressing up…well not for me but for the Naked Waiters! Yes, Rothwell Circle organised another fabulous night for charity whilst publicising ourselves at the same time. Have a look further on in 3 Cheers for more details about the night.

Page 5: 3 Cheers January 2012

The day after, and with a bit of a hangover, I met up with the lovely Sitlington ladies for their Charter Lunch. It was great to catch up with everyone during the afternoon and also to look through their memory books to see the many changes of hairstyles and clothes friends have had over the years!

October went into November and it was time for the Friendship Evening or 'Girl's Night Out'. After feedback from people, Team Tinker decided to alter the format slightly to make it less formal. Well done to Helen Shiggins as the night was a great success. Everyone enjoyed the delicious hot buffet, made some interesting phrases with the scrabble letters and enjoyed looking through photos and mementos from over the years. It was amazing to see how racy some Chairman's interruptions were, including Rothwell ladies in basques and suspenders. Victoria Porritt also gave us an insight into Elland Circle’s early days. You can read all about that on another page but needless to say, times have changed!

A few days later I had the wonderful honour of visiting Penistone Circle to induct 5…yes 5 new members! This was the first time I had done anything like this, but I hope I get the chance to bring more people into Circle during my year! I hope Anna, Elaine, Helen, Karina and Kirsty have as much fun in this organisation as I have!During the evening I was told about the delight of 'The Spread' …or what goes on at The Spread-eagle pub, met Arthuritus the Bear and saw some very interesting Ancient Greek cards. As a history teacher, I can honestly say I've never seen anything like them and I'm not sure the historical basis for some of the positions but hey ho!

November was also the time that my husband, David and a few friends decided to 'do Movember'. This involved growing a 'mo' or moustache without trimming it during the month of November. They did really well, raising a brilliant £1000 for Prostate Cancer.

Christmas Fayres followed. My mum and I got very lost following the SATNAV to Colne Valley's Christmas Fayre and Pamper Night. We opened the door to find lots of girls having nails done and some coming back from facials and massages looking very chilled out! The bar was open and there were lots of stalls in the hall, including an Anne Summers one. I won a very interesting raffle prize on there too!

During the next few weeks I spent time with my own Circle, Rothwell. We paraded our new but also retro t-shirts at a local Christmas Fayre, had our Christmas night out, shopped and wrapped hampers for the elderly, followed by our main community event, Santa In The Park. Then on the 23rd December, we nearly became famous by appearing on Text Santa filmed for a lovely local lady, Pam Clarkson.

After a quiet Christmas at home, Team Tinker had a brilliant meeting with lots of laughs but also with lots of events being sorted for the next few months. Some of them are quite different but a lot of hard work, time and effort has gone into their organisation, so thanks you Team Tinker.

Finally, the last meeting I went to was at my house! Rothwell Circle is now down to 5 members and despite being around for over 40 years, no one really knows about us or what we do. So, we decided to do something about it this year and have a real publicity drive. New t- shirts were ordered, tons of flyers were handed out, a new Facebook page was completed and we are working on a new website and updating the national one too. The most important part was talking to people about us at anything we do and following up emails and texts. As a result we had some re-signed members and 9 interested ladies at the meeting! Lets hope we can up our membership from this.

So as you can see, it has been a busy time, but with lots of exciting events to come along too. I'll hopefully see you at Ladies Night in February, the Winter Olympics, Sing-a long-a Dirty Dancing in March, Rock and Rolling in May or at my main Fundraiser on 20th May for Help For Heroes just to name a few things happening.

Please though, do invite me and any of Team Tinker to any events as I really would like to visit all Circles before my year is out.

Chairman of Vice...

Hi Ladies

I am typing this the day after I opened my Circle magazine to find myself up close to a man’s bottom on the centre page. I’d like to say how embarrassing but I’m not, in fact I’m very proud of my first appearance in our National magazine. As a member of Area 3 I think you too should be very proud, as half the magazine is about Area 3 Circles and Circlers. There are 20 photographs of Vicky Perry, our National president in this edition, the next most photographed Circler appears 9 times and that is our very own Jo Tinker. Altogether Area 3 had 5 articles published and altogether 23 photographs had our members on. Many thanks to Elland, Penistone and Jo for making the effort and sharing the fabulous times we have in Area 3.

Membership

From the information I have and have tried to gather from all Circles I can report that Area 3 currently has 85 members spread over 14 Circles. Unfortunately Holme valley and Baildon will be closing at their 2012 AGM. They currently have 6 members between them and we are very sorry to see them go. On a brighter note I am aware that Penistone has inducted 5 new members since our last Area meeting, increasing their number of Circlers to 11 and they have another prospective!!! There seems to be a real membership drive in Area 3 this year and from those Circles who replied to my text message it appears we have another 6 prospective members (4 in Halifax, 1 in Brighouse & 1 in Sitlington).

Keep calm and recruit appears to be the message so far this year in Area 3, well done ladies.

Do you enjoy the fun, friendship and fundraising Ladies Circle brings to you???

Well why not join our exec for 2012/13 and help Area 3 have a fabulous year. No previous experience required, well the ability to drink lots of fizz and party is desirable but not essential.

Colne Valley Ladies Circle held a pamper and shopping evening on November 23rd 2011 to raise money for our local Scout group. We enjoyed a glass of wine on arrival and then went shopping at stalls with clothes, lotions and potions, cakes, jewellery and something naughty - always a hit with us girls!

Our own Kathy Roche won the "naughty" raffle from Ann Summers (wonder what it was, she never did tell!)

I can highly recommend the Indian head massage, though it does mess up your hair rather a lot with the oil!

A fantastic evening was had by all and we managed to raise over £400 while being pampered and enjoying ourselves!

We were also pampered to within an inch of our lives with Indian head massages, hot stones, paraffin wax pedicures, manicures, facials and much more.

Rothwell Circle Go Naked!

Well almost! Yes it was that time of year again where we at Rothwell Circle have a great time with our naked waiter friends! However, due to popular demand and a long waiting list for tickets, we decided to move our Charity Night with a three course meal, raffle, auction, disco and NAKED WAITERS from a local restaurant to Elland Road Banqueting Suite for the first time ever!

Tickets sold out quickly and on the night around 170 women (over 50 of them were Naked Waiter 'Virgins' descended on Elland Road ready to party!

At the start of the evening, Chairman Hannah spoke about the charities we were raising money for and then Jo Tinker asked all past and present Circlers to stand up and be acknowledged, so that we could all be a reference point for interested people. Our powerpoint was then shown on two massive screens and continued to be played throughout the evening - showing the social, friendship and family side to Circle.

Page 11: 3 Cheers January 2012

Meanwhile, our lovely waiters circulated, doing what they do best...posing for photographs and selling our raffle tickets...far better than we could! Two games of Stand Up bingo were played, followed by an auction of hotel overnight stays, a Blackberry and an iphone! After the formalites, the Dj helped us ladies to dance the night away until the early hours.During the night £1700 was raised for ch i l d r en ' s cha r i t i e s , i n c l ud ing Candlelighters.

The evening was a great success on many fronts, with an amazing amount raised for charity but also a real publicity drive for Circle! We circulated and talked to lots of women who had never heard of us but wanted to find out more. Hopefully, this will result in bringing in new members to boost the five members we already have! Well done Rothwell Circle and keep your diaries free for the end of October 2012!

Show & Tell with Sari...

Well I have to say that my social life has taken a bit of a tumble recently, the girls have been busy but they seem to have forgotten about me, I hope I didn't make a spectacle of myself at their Charter Lunch.

I was so excited about going to my first LC Lunch as I'd heard that these Sitlington Lunches were a right good do. I even had a new dress just as I wished for - a lovely little black number.

I met some nice new friends and felt very honoured to meet our Area Chairman Jo (and her rather dashing hubby - what a nice young man).

I think that perhaps I drank a little too much fizz because I can't remember travelling in the back of the car with Little Lisa to The Kings Arms in Horbury where I caught up with an old friend of mine, Kev.

We partied the night away and I had a great time at the Karaoke . I have to say the Sitlington Girls are brillliant singers especially Sine , she should be on X Factor.

As far as nights out for me that was it! The girls however went on the Westgate Run for Lisa’s hen night (she didn’t have one when she got married 25 years ago). They didn't take me just in case I got lost Hmmph! Then they went to Friendship Evening, took part in the Rosebowl competition and even had a Christmas night out without me!

Anyway it's a New Year now so things will change I'm sure. I know there are lots of fun things being organised by Team Tinker so Sandra had better get her sewing machine out and make me some new clothes, mine are so last season darling!

Sending you all best wishes for the New Year, see you soon.

New Members for Penistone...

Penistone enjoyed another successful year on the 18th November with a night out at Tiamo's in Penistone. Jo Tinker and Karen Flatters were able to join us to enjoy the great food and friendship of the evening. Penistone Circle has gone from strength to strength over the last twelve months as 5 new members wereinducted at our Charter.

Much of the success must be given to Louise, Penistone's Chairman, who made her goal at the beginning of her office to increase the membership of our Circle. She has put together and launched our own website and regularly updates the site to keep it relevant. Supported by Helen Scothern as Vice and all members of PLC, we have been putting ourselves "out there" with posters and flyers at local events.

So welcome to Anna, Lucy, Elaine, Kirsty, Helen K and also Karina who joined a few months earlier, I am sure we will all share many more fun evenings together, fundraise for many worthy good causes and make friendships which will last a lifetime.

Girls Night Out...

What a great night we all had on the 11th November at Berties. 28 Circlers laughed, chatted, drank a little, ate a lot and laughed some more whilst enjoying Circle tales with old and new members!

The new format of the evening was well received with a more informal approach and a fab Berties buffet with more food than we could all manage, and that's saying something!! The room looked great, with a theme of red in respect of Armistice Day and Jo's charity of Help for Heroes, it made a great start to the evening!

We all tested out the grey matter to see who could make the most appropriate Circle related scrabble wo rd s . We t ook p l en t y o f w i ne and recounted a tale to go with each slug we downed!

Some funny stories about Area and National events were recounted with everyone adding their own comments to the story. Dessert was served and we all enjoyed sampling the Bertie's puddings, there was plenty to go round several times.

Coffee brought a twist, with a game of Pairs, to go and find your partner and take coffee with them, Morecambe found Wise, Salt found Pepper and Ben wanted to team up with Jerry until Tom and Bill came along!

Morecambe and Wise!

Page 15: 3 Cheers January 2012

The amount of memorabilia brought along on the night was amazing, albums of past Chairman, Rally committee books, T-Shirts and even the Gnome put in an appearance!!!!

Racy nights at Rothwelland a very young Jo & Dave Tinker!

Victoria's recall of minutes from past Elland meetings was an eye opener into the life of a Circler in the early 60's, I am still in favour of bringing back the Sherry Mornings!

Thank you to everyone who donated raffle prizes, we raised £76 for Jo's Charity with everyone's generosity. Thanks also for the lovely comments on Facebook afterwards, I was glad to know that the new Friendship Evening went down so well and hopefully we can repeat such a good evening later in 2012

Operation Shoebox...

Hi Jo Happy New Year to you all & here's to a good 2012. I know from a good friend that shoeboxes sent to the Yorkshire Regiment were greatly received. Sadly, her son was injured in Friday's blast that killed one of his friends in the Regiment (you may have seen in the news). Her son has was airlifted to c Bastion for an operation and will be brought back to the UK tomorrow for further treatment. Thankfully he is still here & one of the 'lucky ones' if we can call it that. It just brought it home to my family that this is real & any small gestures that can help to keep morale up are appreciated. Enjoy the second half of your year at the helm of Area 3 - you are doing a great job! (sorry this mail turned into a downer) YIF Tracey x

Update - Matthew has returned to the UK & following a short stay at Selly Oak & is recovering at home with his family. He is expected to make a good recovery.

The shoe boxes we stuffed with goodies for our serving troops were appreciated.

was here that Lesley Wood cryptically told us to keep the afternoon of the 23rd December free for a very special event…and that was all she would say!

Our Christmas party came and went and then it was onto Santa In The Park, an event we have taken over from the now disbanded Round Table. Debbie Mallinson did a fantastic job organising it and our prayers were answered, as the morning of the 18th December was cold but sunny and clear. Word had gone round and the Facebook invite helped to spread the news and so we had a much bigger crowd than last year. The helicopter flew in slowly, did a twirl and landed. To us in Rothwell, this is the real start of Christmas as it is such a magical event that we provide for free.

Rothwell festive fun...

Christmas is always a busy time for Rothwell Circle and this year is was made more exciting by us becoming famous…well almost!!!!!

The festive fun began at our local Christmas Fayre where we unveiled our new T-shirts, which said:

During the afternoon, we made lots of cash on the chocolate tombola, let our children hand out flyers, advertising Circle and talked to lots of people about us who were intrigued by our T-shirts! Hopefully this will help us with our membership drive!Next, in early December we met to shop for and then wrap Christmas Hampers for those elderly people in Rothwell who were on their own at Christmas and could do with a treat. It

Page 19: 3 Cheers January 2012

Finally, the 23rd December had arrived and we were told to meet up at 5ish. We all came along, with our children and our T-shirts and walked to the Blackburn Hall. We managed to get passed the police and walked into the hall.

WOW! The Blackburn Hall is usually a nice council shade of grey but this time it was covered with black star cloth. There were Christmas trees lining the sides, covered with snow, a smoke machine, tables with white tablecloths, candelabras and white flowers. On the stage was a male voice choir and Russell Watson having a sound check! Then we looked over and Kym Marsh and Brian Turner were talking to the producer and some other bloke from Emmerdale.

Four hours later, the filming for Text Santa with Ant & Dec was finished and although we had to hang around for a very long time, it was worth it to see a lady called Pam Clarkson receive a well-deserved treat. Every year, Pam get people together to organise a Christmas lunch, on Christmas Day for elderly people who would otherwise be on their own. She also does another lunch during the year and takes them all out on a trip. Rothwell Circle raise money for her every year and she calls us 'her angels'.

Back to the story! On Christmas Eve, we tuned into Ant & Dec's Text Santa to see where we were. The magic of television…erm not so sure as if you look closely, replay the clip a few times and know what we all look like in silhouette…then you may catch a glimpse of us!

We had a fun-filled Christmas in Elland. We got into the festive mood at the beginning of December with our annual Christmas Party. This had been a formal event for years but for the last two years we have cut the price, changed the dress code and it’s brilliant. This year we all sang along with the Slaithwaite Brass Band, enjoyed a simple festive hot supper and danced the night away with a disco. Best of all was the £700 we raised for charity.

Next came the Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church. Every Christmas, local community groups and businesses pay to have a tree in the church and it is opened up to the public to visit over the first weekend in December. The church is filled with beautiful trees and twinkling lights and it’s really magical. We had to choose a theme for our decorations so, having chosen Christmas puddings as our theme, Katie, Susanne and I spent a very therapeutic morning in my kitchen making decorations out of felt, glittery

card and sequins. After quite a few more hours of work (why do I get so carried away with these things?) we had lots of lovely puddings to put on our tree and a big Elland Ladies Circle bow for the top so there was no doubt who’s handiwork it was! Katie and I took our lovely daughters to help put on the decorations.

For our December meeting we met at my house, put on our festive hats and went down the road to Norton House, a care home for the elderly. All the residents gathered in one room and Christine, a member of Elland Tangent, played the piano for the annual performance of the Elland Ladies Circle choir. What we lacked in ability we made up for in enthusiasm and luckily some of the residents joined in with the carols to boost the standard! After the singing we handed out cake, mince pies and sherry to the residents. It’s always a really special evening. It’s so nice to get directly involved with the community rather than just raising money.

Our final bit of festive fun came just before Christmas. We left all the Christmas chores at home, got our glad rags on and went to Brasserie at the Bull in Halifax for a few drinkies, a lovely meal and a good natter. Just the kind of evening Circlers are best at!

As Elland Ladies Circle Secretary this year, I am the keeper of all the old minutes books which,

in our case, go back to 1962. When Jo asked us for Circle memories for our Girls Night Out in

November, I decided to have a look at what the ladies of Elland got up to in the early days. That

glimpse into Circling from nearly 50 years ago went down so well on the night that I've been

asked to share it with the readers of 3 Cheers.

Subs have always been an issue. In 1962, 21/-d was proposed but by the first AGM they were

raised to 25/-d, as expenses weren't being covered and Area capitation had gone up from

1/6d to 2/6d. By 1964, they were 35/-d and we've been on the same slippery slope ever since!

Apparently we were late paying our Area subs that first year and had to be reminded by the

Area treasurer.

Some things never change:

It seems we've been selling parkin at the Elland Round Table bonfire for 49 years! Even then we

didn't get the quantities right as it states in the minutes, 'the demand for parkin exceeded our

supplies.'

There's the first mention of our wonderful Circle table cloth. It was proposed that we embroider

a tablecloth with the Circle emblem and all members' names. New members still sign the

tablecloth but our embroidery skills don't quite match with those of the girls in the earls 1960s.

Trying to work alongside Tablers was no easier then. We were asked to help at the 'Mile of

Pennies' in 1963. 'We replied that we should be pleased to help, but hoped that they would let

us know the date of the event as soon as possible.' The next month we received the date and 'it

is hoped that some members will be able to help.' The following month it is simply stated, 'the

mile of pennies has been cancelled.’

Some things have changed though:

Speakers included the Rev. W R Barnes who gave a very entertaining talk entitled 'How I met my

Wife', Mrs Joyce Kaye gave a talk on Blind Welfare and Mrs Crinnon demonstrated 'Supper

Savouries.'

In 1965, the outgoing Chairman was presented with her past Chairman's jewel and a cut glass

cigarette lighter.

My favourite 1960's Circle event and the one which Area Exec seem most enthusiastic about

bringing back is one from June 1966. It was a 'Sherry Morning' and was apparently a great

success!

Halifax go to Feelay...

Back in September Halifax Ladies Circle set off on their annual weekend to Feelay Towers or should I say our T's.

Car1 - set off Thursday with our 'T' preparing for our arrival.

Car 2 - set off on Friday slightly later than planned, heavily laden down but we were all full of excitement. There was Sharron, Meryl, Tracy, Jo and myself all jammed in - absolutely no room for shopping!!!!!!!!! Thank god for air conditioning because the weather was hot and sunny , and continued to be like that all weekend!!

We stopped at the York Outlet for a spot of shopping and a few hundred pounds lighter we landed at Feelay Towers. No surprises when we got there. It remains the 5* rating we have come to know and love.

Next to arrive was Clare who surpassed all our expectations in terms of time of arrival and using all forms of transport arrived before the pizzas. I have to say she looked a tad disgruntled to find we were all merry from the wine BUT was soon back on form once she'd caught up - approximately 30 mins later!!

Car 3 - arrived later than planned due to the fact they had to detour and pick up my forgotten camera and the inclement weather. Poor Sarah drove through torrential rain whilst Jane co-piloted drinking G&T's!!!After eating our delivery pizza we set off to the local pub Foords - where we were entertained by Gary the Landlord or should I say we entertained Gary.

The hostess with the mostest -our very own ‘T’ and Jane

Carol with Vice Chair Sarah (left) andVice Vice Chair Tracy (right). We had neither

position filled before we set off to Filey!!!!

It's the Olympics all the way this year -we even had our very own bus!!!

Page 24: 3 Cheers January 2012

Saturday we had our Macmillan coffee morning before we set off on a trek around Filey. We had our very own Prince William look-a-like who took us on a 2 hour walk over all terrain as we digested facts whilst we marched. We even climbed a mountain clinging to the rock face - we were like mountain goats - well some of us were!!

After our usual fish & chip lunch we spent an hour shopping for tat - the girls didn't disappoint. I received a box full of Olympic themed items ranging from a bikini top and goggles to the Olympic torch and a dancing video!

Then it was back to Mal Wilkinson for our hot tub treat - 3 hours in the fabulous hot tub, basking in the sun, drinking fizz. Saturday evening we indulged in a little X - Factor, some more than others - namely Claire over HER Gary . We had a wonderful meal prepared for us by our 'T' and then it was 'Show and Tell' for the TAT.

The start of a guided tour of Feelay Briggwith our very own Prince William.

What a view!

Sharron sporting her Olympic swimwear

Page 25: 3 Cheers January 2012

Sunday we had a huge breakfast before a brief walk on the promenade then quickly retired to the Sugar Shak for cake and coffee.

We learnt lots that weekend :- What a sea fret is - Artichokes are not fish- Monsieur is not the same as Monsignor - How Jo gets away with buying expensive shoes

We were very creative:- we wrote a Ladies Circle song to a Bay City Rollers tune

We acquired:- A Vice Chairman - A Vice Vice Chairman

Halifax Ladies Circle had an absolutely fabulous weekend with Tracey as the most superb and perfect host, what a star! We even managed to fulfill the Ladies Circle Motto 100x over - Fun, Friendship and a bit of Fundraising.

The weekend wouldn't be completewithout a 3 hour stretch in the hot tub.

The end of a perfect weekendat the Sugar Shak.

An elderly lady was standing at the railing of the cruise ship holding her hat tight so that it would not blow away in the wind.A gentleman approached her and said,"Pardon me, madam..I do not intend to be forward but did you know that your dress is blowing up in this high wind?""Yes, I know," said the lady."I need both my hands to hold onto this hat.""But madam, you must know that you are not wearing any knickers and your privates are exposed!" said the gentleman in earnest. The woman looked down, then back up at the man and replied, "Sir, anything you see down there is 75 years old. I just bought this hat yesterday!"

Funnies...

Area 3 Needs You...

To stand for Exec!

I t ’s great fun and no more challenging than doing a job in your own Circle - after all, if we can do it, anyone can!

Treasurer and Secretary are two-year posts so this year we are just looking for:

Vice ChairmanMust like stalking & supporting, meeting & greeting and taking photos. You’ll need to watch, learn, look and listen and be available for an even busier role in June 2013!

SocialMust like socialising and organising. You’ll be responsible for organising the Handover Dinner and Friendship Evening as well as the Non-Sporting and Jolly Sausage trophies.

Community Service (CSLO)You will need to organise a fundraising event for the October ‘think pink’ meeting and probably another fundraiser or two chosen by the Chairman.

PressYou will need to put together 3 Cheers from all the pictures and stories that our brilliant Circlers send in. That’s it! (I’ll let you into a little secret - publishing online is surprisingly easy!)

SportsYou will need to organise the Rosebowl draw and find a venue for the final. You’ll also arrange games for the Golf, Rounders and Bowling trophies. You don’t have to be good at any of the above to apply - or any other sport for that matter!

SalesYou must like shopping with someone else’s money, finding fun and exciting things to sell to your fellow Circlers.
