THIRD GENERATION To meet the growing demand in network capacity

3G standards started evolving.

Launched in japan by NTT 2001

It is based on the ITU family of standards.

3G technologies enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services.

Services include many applications all in a mobile environment.

The data are sent through the technology called Packet switching.Voice calls are interpreted through circuit switching.

HistoryThe first pre-commercial 3G network was launched by NTT DoCoMo in

Japan on 1998.

It was first available in May 2001 as a pre-release (test) of technology.

The first commercial launch of 3G was in Japan on 1 October 2001.

The first commercial network in Europe was opened for business by Telenor in December 2001 with no commercial handsets and thus no paying customers.

The first network to go commercially live was by SK Telecom in South Korea on the CDMA-based 1xEV-DO technology in January 2002.

DRAWBACKS OF 1G

Poor voice quality Poor battery life Large phone size No security Frequent call drops Limited capacity and poor handoff reliability.

Page 5: 3 g

DRAWBACKS OF In GSM the end systems are dedicated for the entire call session.

This causes inefficiency in usage of bandwidth and resources.

The GSM enabled systems do not support high data rates.

They are unable to handle complex data such as video.Reduce range of sound.Weaker digital signal.

MUSIC ON YOUR MOBILE!!

Music is an important mobile content category.

Mobiles can’t compete with Ipods etc.

True mobility immediate & direct access to downloadable music, with no cables or PC.

TAKING GAMES TO THE NEXT LEVEL

3G technology has taken the gaming to the next level.

Real-time multiplayer gaming is possible in 3G system.

Innovative new services are being added by developer daily.

EXTENDING TV TO MOBILES

Not simply rebroadcast of TV or website. Enhanced existing service for mobile

environment. Multi-faceted – 24*7 access to multiple

live streams , video , image & text content , voting , messaging.

User interaction on multiple levels. Fully integrated in browser – one click

access.

Video-Conferencing

Adoption3G was relatively slow to be adopted globally.

In some instances, 3G mobile operators must build entirely new networks and license entirely new frequencies.

In December 2007, 190 3G networks were operating in 40 countries, according to the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA).

3G has also introduced the term "mobile broadband"

USB Modems connecting to 3G networks are becoming increasingly common.

ADVANTAGES OF

New radio spectrum to relieve overcrowding in existing systems.

More bandwidth , security & reliability. Inter-portability between services providers. High data rates. Rich multimedia services. Always online devices.

Page 12: 3 g

DISADVANTAGES OF

Expensive input fees for the 3G service licenses. Numerous differences in the licensing terms. It is a challenge to build the necessary

infrastructure for 3G Expense of 3G phones . Lack of buy-in by 2G mobile users for the new 3G

wireless services. Large cell phones. Requires more power

In Asia and IndiaAsia is also using 3G services very well.

Dialog Axiata PLC was First to serve 3G Service in South Asia in 2006

A lot of companies like BSNL, WorldCall, PTCL, Maxis, Vodafone, Airtel, Idea Cellular, Aircel, Tata DOCOMO and Reliance have released their 3G services.

11 December 2008, India entered the 3G arena with the launch of 3G enabled Mobile and Data services by Government owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd MTNL in Delhi and later in Mumbai.

After MTNL, another state operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) launched 3G services on 22 Feb 2009 in Chennai and later launched 3G as Nationwide.
