FOREWORD, by Jim Nicholson MEP

Part of what I enjoy most about being an MEP is the opportunity it gives me to travelthe length and breadth of Northern Ireland, meeting with individuals, businesses, andcommunity organisations across the province. It is always great to see thecontribution community and voluntary groups are making to improve theircommunities and to visit local businesses, from all sectors, that are seeking toinnovate and expand.

One of the biggest issues I encounter on these visits is funding. Many sections of oursociety, whether it is in the voluntary and community sector, agriculture or the widerbusiness community, are finding it difficult in securing the finance and supportnecessary to guarantee their future. With budget cuts and increased competition forsupport it is important that organisations in Northern Ireland explore all possibilities forfunding and maximise any opportunities.

I understand that finding funding for any project can be a complex process. Thisbooklet, supported by AECR, aims to provide an introduction and overview to thevarious funding opportunities available at both a European and local level. Hopefullythe information and advice contained within will prove helpful in your search forfunding.

I hope that by utilising the information in the pages overleaf funding uptake will beincreased and that this will help ensure Northern Ireland gets its fair share. Please donot hesitate to contact my office if you require any further assistance.

Yours Sincerely

Advice on EU FundingThe European Commission makes financial contributions in the form of grants insupport of projects or organisations which contribute to the implementation of an EUprogramme or policy. The Commission awards grants sometimes directly throughfunding programmes or through cooperation with national or regional authorities.

EU Grants

Since grants cover a diverse range, the specific conditions that need to be fulfilledwill vary. Make sure to read through any project guidelines and selection criteriabefore applying. However, there are some basic principles that apply in almost allcases;

• European funding is unlikely to cover all the costs of a project - the majority ofprogrammes only fund between 50% and 70% of project costs

• Grants cannot be awarded retroactively for actions that are already completed

Where to Start

Getting EU funding may seem complicated, but there are several places that you cango for advice;

EU Commission Website

The European Commission website provides information on getting a grant as wellas on the different funding programmes available. It includes links to the variousCommission Departments. www.ec.europa.eu

European Commission Office in Northern Ireland

For further details on each funding strand available within the province contact theCommission’s office in Northern Ireland on 028 9024 0708 or visit the website formore information.www.ec.europa.eu/unitedkingdom/about_us/office_in_northern_ireland/

Europe Direct NI

Europe Direct information centres act as the first point of contact for questionsabout the European Union. Europe Direct NI can provide information on EU Grantsand answer general questions on EU policies, programmes & funding. Visit thewebsite www.eurolink-eu.net, email [email protected] or call 028 8556 7688 for more information.

Additional advice can be found through the EUROPA portal that contains informationon grants and funding available from the EU. www.europa.eu/about-eu/funding-grants

General Advice on FundingObtaining funding can be challenging for any organisation, especially in the currenteconomic climate. There are a wide variety of funders out there looking to supportworthwhile projects but competition is strong, with more and more organisationsseeking a share of a finite pot of money.

There are a number of things organisations can do to make the search for fundingeasier and increase the chances of a successful funding bid:

Get Support

There are many available sources able to provide assistance with funding bids.Some of these are listed on the next two pages. In addition, most funders will offeradvice and information on their grants and how to apply. Don’t be afraid to contactfunding sources for more information before applying.

Many organisations, including councils, government agencies and charity groups, willoccasionally offer events, training sessions, seminars and workshops on fundingprogrammes and making application bids. Try to attend as many of these aspossible.

Funding Applications

Although every application will have different requirements, there are some commonaspects to take into account when applying for funding;

• Demonstrate a need for the project

• Show the project is well planned

• Accurately cost the project

• Provide evidence of good management

• Outline how the project will make a difference

Preparation is key for a successful funding bid; research potential funders beforeapplying, check the guidelines and requirements and tailor applications accordingly.

Match Funding

Remember not all funders will offer financial aid of up to 100% of the costs,therefore it may be necessary to seek assistance from additional sources; to matchfund costs by applying to more than one funding source, or to supplement grants byutilising money from your budget or money raised through traditional fundraisingmethods.

Other Sources of FundraisingSome grants will only part-fund a project and therefore organisations will beexpected to raise the rest of the funds by other means.

Traditional Ways of Fundraising

All those seeking to secure funding, particularly Voluntary, Community and Not-for-Profit organisations are encouraged to also explore traditional ways of raising funds.Other options of fundraising include;

• Fundraising Events; Coffee Mornings, Dinner Dances, Quiz Nights, Bring and BuySales etc.

• Raffles and Prize Draws• Door-to-Door Fundraising, Collections, Membership Donations• Corporate Sponsorship• Taking part in Sponsored Events, e.g. Marathons, Races etc.

Crowd Funding

Crowd funding is a relatively new and innovative way of fundraising. It involvesraising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, usually via theinternet. Typically, those seeking funds will set up a profile for their project on acrowdfunding website. Examples of crowdfunding sites include;www.crowdfunder.co.uk and www.buzzbnk.org

There are three different types of crowdfunding;

• Donation - People give money simply because they believe in the cause.Rewards can be offered such as acknowledgements, promotional items, regularnews updates, and so on.

• Debt - Investors receive their money back with interest. It allows for the lendingof money while bypassing traditional banks.

• Equity - Money is exchanged for shares, or a small stake in the business, projector venture.

There is a vast array of crowdfunding sites and it is important to read all availableinformation before using a site. The UK Crowdfunding Association (UKCFA) is amembership organisation formed by a group of crowdfunding businesses, itproduces a code of conduct that is adopted by its members and aims to protectthose participating in crowdfunding. The UKCFA website provides links to variouscrowdfunding sources, and is a useful place to start for those interested incrowdfunding. Visit the website; www.ukcfa.org.uk
