MooseMoose——Build Our FoundationBuild Our Foundation Membership campaigns are cre-ated and implemented by the Membership Department at Moose International. Annual Membership Campaigns typical-ly run from May 1 to April 30 and have a unique theme each year.

This year’s Annual Membership Campaign is Moose – Build Our Foundation. which runs from May 1, 2015 to April 30, 2016. In 2014-2015, our Lodges, Chapters, and Moose Legions struggled to maintain their mem-bership levels. In order to grow our foundation of mem-bers to support our key endeavors, we need to refocus our efforts in production and retention. This year’s one member award, a ‘Moose – Build Our Foundation’ lapel pin, should be awarded by each Lodge or Chapter after a member sponsors his/her first candidate during the campaign year. Members attaining membership in the Moose International 5 Club will receive a ’5 Club’ logo static window decal and funds generated by these members will help sup-port the replacement of the Indoor Playground Floor at Mooseheart. This award is made possible by your State/Provincial Moose Association and WOTM. Unlike other years, however, the new campaign is just the start of a new membership value initiative. At this year’s International Moose Convention in Nash-ville, a very important, long-term program will be announced that will supplement this annual cam-paign and others for the foreseeable future. Details of this exciting new program will be available to all members after the Convention on the Moose Interna-tional website and future issues of Moose magazine. Campaign ads to use in your Lodge/Chapter newslet-ter can be found in our Forms/Documents section.

Lodge to receive up to $25,000.00 for repairs or sprucing up of your facility; money you do not have to pay back. The FBMA Membership Campaign for the new year is “Reel Them In”. This fishing-themed campaign will offer gifts for sponsors of 2, 5, 10 and 25 Lodge members. Members will also qualify for monthly drawings of $100.00 and quarterly drawings of $500.00. There is also a campaign for Lodges that will give them an opportunity to win some cash. “Fast Freddie’s Dash For Cash” gives your Lodge an opportunity to qualify for a quarterly drawing for $1000.00 cash. I want to say a special thanks to each member that has taken and office or chairmanship for the year. I know from experience that sometimes the job can seem over-whelming and there may be days when you ask yourself, “Why did I do this?” The answer should be: to help my Lodge, Chapter or Moose Legion to grow, to help make our fraternity the best it can be and to support our chil-dren and seniors entrusted to our care. Thanks for all you do to make our world a better place to live. Here’s to a successful year. I know we will have a great one. Why? Because we are a cut above the rest and second to none. Fraternally, Jerry Monk Territory Manager/Liaison

Another Moose Year has passed us by and a new one begins. Perhaps your Lodge, Chapter or Moose Legion did not reach its goals for the 2014 - 2015 year and perhaps you did not reach the personal goals that you set for yourself, but don’t look on it as a fail-ure. Goals are sometimes

a stretch and if you came close you’re a winner. As of this writing I have no idea if the FBMA will have gains in membership for the 2014 - 2015 year. I know we gave it our best shot and if we do fall short, be proud of what we have done this year. We are not the only Associ-ation that struggled this past year. Now it is time to look forward to the current year. Now is the time for every Governor, Sr. Regent and Moose Legion President to set the goals for their unit and fire the starter’s pistol and get off and running. Plan mem-bership drives, short and long term campaigns. Set a goal of how much money you want to donate to Moose Char-ities. Plan Heart Of The Community events so the entire community knows that you are a true fraternal organiza-tion that cares for children and seniors and exists to help the local community in times of need. Get out in your communities and supply manpower for char-itable events. Plan an Open House and invite the public in to see what you have to offer. Be the best neighbor anyone could ask for. The Lodge Grant Program starts earlier this year. Lodges can apply begin-ning on May 1, 2015. Ap-plications are due by June 30, 201, and to qualify your Lodge must be represented at the International Con-vention in Nashville. This is an opportunity for your

effort to get expired and dropped back in the fold or sign up new members. It can be done. Finally I thank all of you for what you do for the children and seniors, and in your communities.

    Fraternally,

    William B. Norris President FBMA

My Brothers and Co-Workers it is hard to believe that we have just passed the halfway point of the FBMA’s year. This year is just going faster than I expected. I was told that this would be the fastest year of my life. This surely has been the truth. The Mid -Year conference is now in the books. The break-out sessions were very successful. Those who chose to attend them all learned something new. The OVs added food for thought on how we could do some things a little different. Then of course there was the Non-Polar Plunge. It was another fun thing to do and raise a lot of money for the school renovation. This quick trick raised more than $5,000.00 in less than a half hour. What a deal. Last but not least, I think the busi-ness sessions were very informative. I want to thank the presenters: they all did an excellent job. As always I have to mention membership. We still have time to get the job done, but all of us must make an extra

From the Desk of the President

What a wonderful Mid-year Conference it was, and we so enjoyed having Marlene Snyder as our Official Visitor. She got our batteries charged up with Viva La Moose; thank you Marlene.

I would like to say a special “Thank You” to my hostess chapter Big Pine Key #1810, they worked very hard and did such a beautiful job. They had so much fun, they are going to do it in Sep-tember for our Annual Confer-ence.

I would like to congratulate Madeline Skiba [Past Dep-uty Grand Regent] for win-ning the Sunshine Lifetime Achievement Award. I was lucky enough to meet with Madeline and her daughter Bobbie with six co-workers from Pompano Beach #600 at the Health Center of Coconut Creek to present the award in person on my way home from Conference. See the pictures in the gallery or on my Facebook page. Thank you for all your kind words and love I felt there, Florida co-workers are wonderful. See you in September. Thank you for the many things you do each day for which you receive no more than the satisfaction of knowing you have helped keep our beloved fraternity strong for generations to come.

Thank you for telling the story of the Moose.

The average life cycle for a business in the United States today-- from start to end--is just seven years. But, our fraternity has prospered for more than 110 years. Society is changing rapidly. For instance, between 1960 and 1990, the percentage of school children going home to a family where the father held a full-time job and the mother was a full-time homemaker, decreased from 72% to a mere 8%. We must prepare for the future.

We are interested in your opinions as to how we may improve our fraterni-ty and prepare for the fu-ture. Changes in policies and laws are constantly under consideration. Please send me your ideas for consideration. Collec-tively, we can accomplish anything. As Arnold Palmer once said, “The road to success is always under construction.” So, put on your thinking cap and please let me hear from you.

We have a difficult task ahead of us and that is maintain-ing our current membership and growing it by at least one each and every year. We must grow to survive. Of course, as we grow we will experience growing pains. Please keep an open mind. The only constant in our lives is change. No matter what the situation it will change. Work with change, embrace it; do not let it pass you by.

    Fraternally & Thankfully,

Noleta “Sam” Harris Regional Manager 704.431.5992 [email protected]

    HAS ANYONE THANKED YOU LATELY?

I’m using my limited space, not to inform, but to say one very important thing: “Thank You!”

The vast majority of our Lodge leaders are selfless, caring individuals, volun-teering substantial time and resources to make their Lodge and fraternity

a success. To you, I simply say:

Thank you for efforts to protect our children and seniors by enforcing the Private Policy.

Thank you for understanding the need for more in-formed leaders and the necessity of required attend-ance at leadership schools, district meetings, confer-ences and conventions.

Thank you for your efforts to adopt new Social Quarters Rules & Regulations.

Thank you for accepting and understanding the many recent changes designed to keep our fraternity current with (and, hopefully, stay ahead of) our ex-tremely complex and fast-paced world. Preparing for the future requires “anticipatory” thinking.

Thank you for efforts to comply with our General Laws.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you.

Thank you for signing up new members to increase our numbers.

Thank you for emptying the trash, washing dishes, or cleaning off tables.

Thank you for typing, printing, folding and mailing the Lodge newsletters.

Thank you for being the type of person that is al-ways willing to put others needs in front of your own.

Thank you for being my brothers and sisters in the Moose. Family is very important to me.

From the Desk of the Regional Manager

Continuity gives us roots; change gives

us branches, letting us stretch and grow

    and reach new heights.

    MOOSEHEART NEWS

Mooseheart, IL March 31 - With more than 15,000 eggs on its football field, you'd have thought that Mooseheart's Easter Egg Hunt might have lasted longer than usual. Guess again. More than 4,000 children, sepa-rated into four egg-hunting age groups, cleared the FieldTurf surface of all items placed for col-lection for the March 28th event in less than three minutes. Mooseheart Executive Director Gary Urwiler estimated the 7-8 year-olds col-lected everything in their area within 40 sec-onds. "When you watch it from above, it's like a hu-man wave," Urwiler said. "They just all come at once and they're done so quickly. It was great to watch." So many people arrived close to the 11am start time that Urwiler added five minutes to the sta-dium scoreboard clock, which tracks the time remaining before the collection begins. "There were so many people making a valiant effort to be here, it just seemed like the right thing to do," Urwiler said. "I looked into the parking lot and there were a lot of people try-ing to get here."

In five years, the Moose-heart Easter Egg Hunt has become increasingly pop-ular, and forecasts for poor weather faded into a clear, sunny day that was perfect for egg collecting. "Even this morning when we were getting ready for the event, it was 16 degrees," Urwiler said. "We were a little worried that it would keep peo-ple from coming out. But once the sun started breaking through, it warmed up and it was great for the day." There is more to the East-

er Egg Hunt at Mooseheart than the brief frenzy of egg collection. For an hour prior to the hunt and for two hours after its conclusion, there was face painting, crafts, and activities in the fieldhouse adjacent to the stadium. Families could take photographs with the Easter Bunny or enjoy a free lunch. On the field south of the stadium, there were pony rides and a petting zoo. "We hope that people are sticking around for the lunch, the bounce house, and the arts and crafts," Urwiler said. "We want peo-ple to stay and maybe to ask some questions too, to find out about the Moose, Moose-heart, and what we do here."

    MOOSE CHARITIES

The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches has a mission. It’s a mission to prevent delinquency and develop lawful, resili-ent and productive citizens. How do we do this? By providing opportunities for the boys and girls to learn that by being responsible and completing what they’ve started they can overcome obstacles and find success. One of the Boys Ranch programs that teaches the value of being responsible is the Boys Ranch Heifer Program. The Boys Ranch Heifer Program is part of the Boys Ranch Kressman 4-H program. The heifer program teaches the boys about Florida’s cattle industry and what it takes to prepare a 9 or 10 month old heifer for show-ing. The boys ultimately show their heifers at the Suwan-nee County Livestock Show and Fair where they can win ribbons and prize money. This year, four Ranchers stuck with the program and en-tered the competition. Tyler, Joe, Josh and Caleb picked out their heifers from the Boys Ranch herd in January. To make it to the competition the boys had to maintain their grades, stay out of trouble and take care of their heifers.

    FLORIDA SHERIFFS YOUTH RANCHES

The boys work with the young cows for two months get-ting them used to human handling and accustomed to being tied up. They “halter break” the heifers so that they halter with ease. The boys also learn to lead the cows and spend a lot of time washing and grooming them. The boys also demonstrated their commitment to com-peting in this year’s fair by staying on campus during the first three days of their spring break. While their brothers returned home to be with family and friends, these four boys stayed behind to finish what they started. With their mentor Boys Ranch Assistant Farm Manager Cedric Per-ry, the boys spent three full days at the fairgrounds main-taining and feeding their young cows from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. This year all of the boys placed second or third, but Caleb placed the highest and won a chance to compete for Grand Champion against three other cows. Caleb was a surprise entry into the heifer program this year. He works in the maintenance program on the Boys Ranch campus, and had no previous agricultural background. This was Caleb’s first year volunteering to take part in the heifer program and it looks like it won’t be his last. “Caleb is tough as a lighter knot.” said Cedric—comparing Caleb to the toughness of heart pine. Caleb overcame being kicked, scratched and run over while training his Charolais heifer. After his experience com-peting for grand champion he’s excited about competing again next year. If you would like more information on how to help sup-port the kids in our care, please contact Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches Director of Development Wayne Witczak, at 1-800-765-3797 or visit us at www.youthranches.org.

Norm Vertigan, Moosehaven resident, was on hand to not only watch his grandson’s recent conferral at their Lodge, Lakeshore 2020, but to actually participate as Seminole 81 Moose Legion Ritual Director at the Cele-bration. Norm joined Lakeshore in 1970 and the Moose Legion in 1971. He joined the ritual team and was part of it for 13 years. In 1978, he received his Fellowship degree and also served as District President that year. He moved to Moosehaven in 2004 and has served as Governor of Op-portunity Lodge 4 times and has been Inner Guard for District 13 for the past 4 years. Norm’s grandson and new Moose Legionnaire, Jason Pope, joined Lakeshore in 2014 and was conferred this past March. Jason is in the U.S. Coastguard, stationed in Charleston, SC. Norm has another grandson, Norman Pope, who is also a member of Lakeshore Lodge 2020, but now resides in Houston. Just one big, happy Moose Family. Submitted by Joan Fedora

LODGE AND CHAPTER NEWS Zephyrhills Lodge Completes Moose International Grant Program Project

The Zephyrhills Moose Lodge 2276 was honored to be a recipient of the first Moose International Grant Program. What an exciting experience. When it was announced at the International Convention in Las Vegas our Lodge already knew what was needed the most to create a safer and more attractive part of the community. Most of our parking lot was not only in disrepair, but a major hazard to our members and guests. After the meetings and voting of the membership we de-cided on a company and started the procedure in Sep-tember, following the procedure all the way through by submitting the application on line and sending the com-plete package to Moose International. The application included the plans, with area view of the parking lot, com-plete estimate from Quality Strip and Paving and a time line of the procedure. We had Dan Morgan, a retired asphalt technician as our committee chairman, to be our job supervisor and quali-ty controller. We also made it clear that the Lodge was also adding money on top of the grant to make the job com-plete. On Dec. 24th Christmas eve we received the letter that we have been accepted as a re-

cipient. What a great Holiday for our Lodge. The job was complete and the company paid by the end of Feb. It has picked up the morale within the Lodge and has created a lot of enthusiasm. The participation from our members was outstanding. It took a lot of team work. Thanks to all our Lodge officers for a job well done. Most of all Thanks to the Moose International Supreme Council for this program! Administrator Zephyrhills Lodge 2276 Chuck Plourde

We applied and received a grant for a new and enlarged parking lot. This made our Lodge much more attractive from the street and we believe increased our membership enough to receive the Premier Lodge Award. The new A/C system may have helped, too. The Members and Officers of Lodge #248 thank you very much. Submitted by Eddie Heltzer, Governor Fort Pierce Lodge #248

LODGE AND CHAPTER NEWS Fort Pierce Lodge Uses Grant Money for Bigger Parking Lot

We at Fort Pierce Lodge #248 had a very difficult deci-sion to make at the first of the year. We have been mak-ing temporary repairs to our parking lot for years in order to pass our semi-annual risk pool safety inspection and we badly needed a new air conditioning and smoke re-moval system. We are a pay-as-you-go Lodge and only had the funds for one project. While we were in the de-cision-making process, we received an email about the 2014-2015 Grant Program. After looking over the details of the program, we felt we were eligible.

    LODGE AND CHAPTER NEWS

Following is an excerpt from an article by Ray Collins of the In-verness Lodge 2112 that appeared in the Inverness Pioneer last February. “With all of the bitterly cold weather we’ve experienced, our Inverness Lodge 2112 provides a very welcome spot in which to relax and enjoy the tasty food; the many ac-tivities that are offered, or just to hang out and socialize. The pretty young lady in our photo, Maegan Haganey, is afflicted with a rare form of PCDH19 girls clustering epi-lepsy, for which at present there is no cure. Medical ex-penses for control are continuous and are very high. The Haganey family has been deeply involved in our Lodge for many years and they are highly respected and are very popular. For these reasons, the men and women of the Lodge joined forces to organize a Penny Fundraiser and made additional financial collections. Ergo, a check of $1,762.00 was presented to Maegan in order to assist with the costs of treatment. Additional research funding in required in order to hasten the development of a cure from this dreadful ailment.” Submitted by Vicki Paulsen

The Governor for the Lodge, Tim Thomas, and Sr. Regent Mickey Emberton are grateful to their members and co-workers for making all of this happen.
