HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING

WE CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD

In the October 13 bulletin, I asked parishioners to think about prioritizing ministries for chil-dren, youth, young adults and families when we become a new parish. I was pleased by the heartily response from many people that they were excited about this idea. At the same time I heard from a number of veteran parishioners who said, “Father Joe, we support your sugges-tion. We need to hold on to our young people but please, don’t forget us senior citizens. We need support in our faith too!” I love when people tell me what ison their minds. The solution to what the long time parishion-ers ask an easy one. We already have the talent and the right people on our staff to make sure our senior members have their needs met as well. It is just a matter of re-aligning staff members to different positions. Therefore, I’m happy to announce the following adjustments to our staff:

Jack Shaw has agreed to adjust his current duties and responsibilities to help and assist our parishioners over fifty who are still very active. Jack will also assist our homebound and frail parishioners. In time he will coordinate services to our neighbors in need beyond our parish. Jack will continue leading the New Evangelization but will primarily, for the next few years, focus on pastoral and social outreach.

Father Steve Palsa, our Parish Chaplain has agreed to work within our Grouping in serving specifically the Sacramental Life of our sick, homebound and their families. As a Parish Chaplain, Father Steve’s principal responsibility is to cover area health care facilities for our grouping and the Cathedral Parish Grouping. He has been exemplary in visiting patients in the hospitals and area nursing facilities since the inception of the new Grouping. He has now graciously agreed to visit homes of our own parishioners on a regular basis and also pro-vide Extreme Unction and the Apostolic Indulgence to the dying when emergencies arise. Father wants our fami-lies not to hesitate calling him for emergencies. All of our priests are also available if the homebound want Con-fession or just a priest to talk with.

During the confusion that happened during the first year of the Grouping, Father Steve assumed many menial tasks that he did without any complaint. These jobs can now be taken over by the goodness of many lay volun-teers and even some of our paid staff. Please read on to another section of this bulletin where we need your help if you are willing and able.

Please note below the specific tasks of Jack Shaw’s new position and Father Steve’s new role:

Jack Shaw, Part-time Minister of Pastoral and Social Outreach:

• Provides pastoral and social services that will foster well-being, friendships, recreation and community-building among parishioners, especially but not limited to members over fifty; i.e., day trips, mini-bus trips, social gatherings, retreats, days of learning etc.

• Provides staff support to any existing parish committees or apostolic work groups engaged in works of charity and justice.

• Invests in regular recruitment of new members for these groups and assists in the orientation of these new volunteers.

• Equips more volunteers to provide pastoral support to our homebound parishioners and parishioners now living in nursing homes.

Father Steve Palsa, Parish Chaplain - In addition to Father Steve’s principal duties, Father Steve has agreed to provide these additional services to our Grouping:

• Visits the sick and homebound (especially those who live alone) within our Grouping on a routine schedule. Father Steve will not replace the services of the current Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to the homebound.

• Provides the Sacrament of Penance or Anointing of the Sick to any homebound parishioner upon request.

• Provides Extreme Unction and the Apostolic Indulgence in the home of a parishioner where this unexpected need arises. Family members should never hesitate to call for Father Steve.

I am extremely grateful to Jack and Father Steve for their openness to lead these important ministries in our Grouping. I have no doubt they will do an exceptional job. Their leadership in these areas is also going to inspire the rest of us to look in on one another and become a warm and caring faith community where everyone is included and no one is forgotten.

Ministry to the Bereaved:

As you are already aware, Sister Mary Elizabeth Schrei, SC, has been serving part-time as Minister to the Bereaved. Sister helps families plan the Mass of Christian Burial when a loved one dies. She assists family members to select Scripture Readings for the Mass, prepares the people who will proclaim the readings, the people who will present the Bread and Wine at the Altar and the person who delivers the brief eulogy. Sister Mary Elizabeth also attends the funeral Mass to assist the family in carrying out these roles so that everything is well ordered. Our thanks to Sister for her compassion and care.

HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING

ETERNAL REST GRANT UNTO THEM, O LORD. And Let the Perpetual Light Shine upon them

All parishioners in both of our parishes are invited to write the names of all their loved ones that they would like to have remembered throughout the month of November at every Mass offered in our churches. These Books of Remembrance will be available for you to write the names of relatives and friends beginning on November 7, 2019. The Book of Remembrance at Saint Raphael will be located at the Saint Raphael Shrine which is in the middle of the church on the Blessed Mother side. The Book of Remembrance at Sacred Heart Church will be located in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Please take time to write the names of your loved ones you want to remember at the altar.

It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins. (Maccabees 12:46)

In his book: abuse crisis in the Church today. He understands that many Catholics are ask-

ing, or my children under?" Bishop Barron, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, explains why this is not the time to leave, but the time to stay and fight. Viewing the current crisis through the lenses of Scripture and Church

history, the Bishop shows that we have faced such egregious scandals before; that the spiritual treasures of the Church were preserved by holy men and women who recommitted themselves to fighting evil; and that there is a clear

path forward for us today. For Catholics questioning their faith, searching desperately for encouragement and hope, this book will offer reasons to stay and fight for the Body of Christ. This book has been made available at no

HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING

Rooted and Grounded in Love (Ephesians 3:16)

This line of Sacred Scripture has always been a source of immense healing where wounds have threaten the very foundation of our Catholic Faith, the road to healing must lead us back eventually to what grounds us as Christians. No hurt, no matter how severe, can though the love and the pledge of friendships scratching into eternity that Jesus offers us. Healing is always possible.

Forgiving

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.”

- Lewis B. Smedes

Pope Francis wants to provide a “Revolution of tenderness”. Fr. Joe and the Pastoral Staff are asking all parishioners at Sacred Heart Church and Saint Raphael Church to submit ideas how our Grouping can bring our dear parishioners who have been deeply hurt by us or the church in general back to our faith community. How do we invite someone back unless we all are go-ing to welcome that person. Obviously, the first order of business is welcoming, loving, and accompanying.

Please offer Fr. Joe and his staff your idea of how to host events that would bring about “a Revolution of tenderness” right here in our parishes. What would such an event look like? Please complete the form below and return it in your Offertory en-velope next weekend. Your prayerful reflection will help tremendously.

Dear Fr. Joe and Pastoral Staff members, after prayerful consideration of your request, I am pleased to off this suggestion:

A beautiful moment of special grace for our Grouping

There are many signs of a springtime for our Saint Raphael and Sacred Heart Grouping. God is doing great things in our midst. Several Intentional Catholic Houses have been established in our neighborhood. These young men and women pray for the rest of us all the time. Two Focolare Communities have moved within our grouping bounda-ry. Their presence is a sign of favor from God. Finally, after many years, someone has responded to Christ’s call to religious life. The former Irene Schneider, daughter of Martin & Margie Schneider and sister of Ann, has entered the novitiate with the Sisters of Our Mother of Divine Grace on October 22. At that time, she received a new name, Sister Mary Augusta (of Mary, Mother of the Church). The novitiate is the first stage of a long journey to her final profession. Special prayers are asked for her and for her family. Let us all thank God for his call to Sister and for her listening heart.

Come and Adore Christ - Unity, Guidance and Vibrancy Saint Raphael

HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING

In his book: Letters to a Suffering Church, Bishop Robert Barron explores the

abuse crisis in the Church today. He understands that many Catholics are asking, “Why should I stay? Why not abandon this sinking ship before it drags me or my children under?" Bishop Barron, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, explains why this is not the time to leave, but the time to stay and fight. Viewing the current crisis through the lenses of Scripture and Church history, the Bishop shows that we have faced such egregious scandals before; that the spiritual

treasures of the Church were preserved by holy men and women who recommitted themselves to fighting evil; and that there is a clear path forward for us today. For Catholics questioning their faith, searching desperately for encouragement and hope, this book will offer reasons to stay and fight for the Body of Christ. This book has been made available at no charge by the generosity of some of our parishioners, and is available at the back of the Church.

Maybe this is your year to become Catholic! It’s not too late!!

Have you ever thought about: Becoming Catholic? Receiving your Baptism? Receiving your First Communion? Receiving your Confirmation?

Or do you have a spouse, child (any age) or other family member who needs one or more of these sacraments?

Prayerfully consider this invitation...

If so, you are invited to a journey of prayerful discernment leading to full membership in the Catholic Church. Please contact Father John Sweeney at 412-661-3100 to set up a time to meet with him.

ATTENTION ALL CHURCH DECORATORS Father Mele is interested in meeting with all volunteers, current and former volunteers that enjoy helping decorate both of our beau-tiful churches. We realize that at one time both parishes had extensive committees that were in charge of decorating for the holidays but also helped beautify the churches year round. The House of God deserves that consistent care and attention. Art and Environ-ment makes a huge difference in a parish church. They add warmth and hospitality and most of all give glory and honor to Christ. If you are interested in continuing this service to our parishes or returning to help again or want to come on board with Father Joe for the first time, please plan to meet with him on November 9, 2019 at 9:30 AM. in the Holy Angels Conference Room at Saint Raphael’s Campus. Father Joe will explain how he hopes we can forward with this ministry. In order to plan better, if you are willing to attend the meeting with Father Joe to find out more about an Art and Environment Com-mittee and what all will be involved, please let Emily Pino know you will attend. Emily can be reached at [email protected]. If you are already one of the decorators of either church and cannot attend but are interested in staying on as a volunteer, please let Emily know your intentions as well. We want everyone that wants to help to join us as we plan for the fu-ture. Thank you.

GROUPING WANT ADS

Your parish needs your volunteer help. There are so many signs of vibrancy budding already in our parishes. We really need help keeping up with the activities and enthusiasm. Obviously, we are not able to hire people to help us. We need to rely on your good will. Besides, it is fun to volunteer at the local parish level. You meet the nicest people. You gain a sense of be-longing that often leads to some of the most wonderful and meaningful friendships in life. And by volunteering around the parish, your faith is made much stronger by your association with a worthy cause and the good people that help make it hap-pen. Here is a list that we need to start:

Office Staff: - Daytime and Evening Receptionists to answer phones and do some clerical duties. - Seasonal mailing team members. (We will train you). - Volunteers that we can call upon for special occasions.

Porter: Someone that would be willing to make sure the church is open and closed each day. This is a job that the right person could make into a ministry. In fact, up until recently this person was considered the Guardian of God’s House. What a beautiful title! The pastor would train these people because ultimately the pastor is like a dad that has the holy and serious charge of making sure all of his family is safe each night. We are sure there has to be several very pious parishioners that God would love to have to take care of this respon-sibility and labor of love for His family.

2020 MASS INTENTION MAIL-IN FORM

Mass Intentions Mail-In Form for 2020

The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for loved ones, living or de-ceased, is a beautiful and wonderful part of our Catholic tradition. At Saint Raphael and Sacred Heart Parishes, there are many requests for scheduling Mass intentions. As a way to allow as many parishioners as possible to schedule Masses, and understanding that we are still in a time of transition, we are adopting the following policy for scheduling Masses from January 1 through April 12, 2020:

1. The Mass book will be opened for MAIL-IN FORMS ONLY beginning October 21st. This will allow our shut-ins, working families, and retired parishioners to have the same opportunity to schedule Masses in this way. From October 21 - November 3, we will not schedule Masses in person or on the phone. The mail-in form will be available in the bulletin starting October 19 and 20 and also on our website. Parishioners are welcome to return this form and money in an enve-lope in the collection basket at Mass if you do not want to mail it.

2. For those who choose not to use the mail-in form, the Mass book will be opened to schedule Masses in person at each Parish Office beginning Monday, November 4th during office hours. WE WILL NOT SCHEDULE MASSES OVER THE PHONE.

3. We will accept no more than 2 (TWO) intentions per household, based upon availability with only 1 (ONE) Sunday intention if available.

4. A $10 stipend, as determined by Diocesan policy, is to accompany each Mass request.

5. Mass intentions cannot be scheduled for the following days: Holy Thursday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday.

6. Please print names clearly and legibly so that we can enter the names correctly. Lengthy inten-tions cannot be published in the bulletin and will be edited for the sake of brevity. Please indicate if the person for whom the Mass is requested is living or deceased.

7. PLEASE NOTE THE MASS SCHEDULE:

8. If for some reason a Mass intention must be changed, we will contact you to find another date.

9. Please schedule Masses ONLY from January 1 - April 12, 2020. We will open the rest of the Mass book once our Pastoral Council determines the most suitable Mass schedule moving for-ward.

O my God, I love you above all things, with my whole heart and soul,

because you are all good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as

myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me and I ask

pardon of all whom I have injured. AMEN

The practice of defraying the cost of church candles by donating money to have the sanctuary candle burn for specific intentions has long been a custom at St. Raphael Parish. This year, we will have the same option at Sacred Heart Parish. If you wish, you can request the sanc-tuary candle burn for your loved ones for one week with a $10 donation. If paying by check,

please write a separate check for Mass intentions. Please fill in the boxes below if you wish for the sanctuary candle to burn for your intentions.
