My dear Jones,Mimy thanks for your letter of 25th Nov* I shall write and

thank the T. U. C. per next mail. I am physically rather weak but otherwise quite well. I left the Hospital 3 wks ago and am now busy taking in the invigorating air of one of Johannesburg’s outer suburbs in an effort to fill out what the Medioal people term a "cavity" which the pneumonia has left in my right lung. Fortunately there is plenty of writing up that should keep me busy for the next two months.Native Newspapers proposed Merger. There is a proposal to merge into

a combine (European controlled) the leading Zulu, Xosa and Sesuto weekly Journals and to launch a Native National Weekly. If properly controlled, the proposal is a good one but I’m just a little afraid that the journals may insiduously be used to express the S. A. P. polioy which in effect would be the policy of big Capital with its proposal to substitute Black for White labour without very materially altering the present wage basis. As you can readily understand, such a change in industry would give the Native more self—expression. I have been sounded a; to my views and have been asked to become adviser to the editorial boa*d which will be composed of a Chief Editor (European) and three Native Subs. The position might put me in a position to guard against my present fears on the other hand it might put me into an invidious position.south African W. E. T. U. C. Arising out of a meetin that the

Transvaal W. E. A. had with the vVitwalersrand Trades Council yesterday evening, it is very likely that a number of Tutorials and Study groups will be formed on "The Rise and Growth of Industrialism," "Why Prices Rise and Fall," and "The Trade Union Movement." The W. E. T. U. C. is nett actually formed but a provisional committee is in being. The ease for a W.E.T.U.C. was put forward by Miss Hodgson (the President of the Transvaal W.E.A.i, and old I.L«P*er named Kendall and myself.Indiafl. Cony ess and C.F. Andrews. The Transvaal Indian Congress

will be held to-morrow. It will discuss tiie hound Table Conference Report and send a mandate to Ghan** * This afternoon I met C. F. Andrews and had a good talk with him on >.A. non-European movements and the reasons for their failure.Andrews is a splendid fellow. I hope to meet him again to-dorrow.

I am very grieved to hear of Miss Holtby's illness would ask you to pass on this letter or a copy to her. During m

illness the real friends rallied round and I’m sure it was Miss Hodgson** splendid attention to me in her own home that pulled me through, although I never really thought of "handing in my checks."

The I. C. U. of Africa is now the only purely Native movement in the Transvaal and O.F.3. that has either a Headquarters or an office* The 0* P. and its industrial offshoot, the 3* A. Non-£uror>ean Fed. of T. Us., is defunct. The death-blow came through a third degree on alleged "chauvinistic ripjit-wing tendencies of certain leaders• ” W* H* .ndrews, Bunting and stfvoxdL others were expelled*

There is some tolk of a General Election here on the Gold Standard. If a change came it would be Tweedle-dee giving place to Tweedledum or vice-versa* The S. • Labour Party has neither a soul or a policy*

Shat mess things are in at home* I see that my old Chief - The Rev* James Barr - was one of the casualties.

Pass on the news to Dr. Korman Leys and the others*I conclude with very grateful thanks for all you have

done for me* At times it is haartbreaking out here but I shall not be long before I gat right into things again and put the heart-breaks behind me*
