ATTENTION 5th GRADE PARENTS!
The fifth grade picnic scheduled for Friday, June 7th
has been changed to Tuesday, June 11th!
With all of the winter weather we have been experiencing lately parents shouldkeep the following information in mind concerning snow make-up days andparent pick up guidelines.
Snow Make-Up Day Schedule:
Parkland’s first two weather days October 29th and 30th will be made up asteacher professional development days. The third weather day whichoccurred on October 31st was made up by having school on November 6,2012. The 4th weather day we incurred on November 1st will be made up onFriday, February 15th and the 5th weather day we just incurred on January28th will now be made up on Thursday, March 28th. All additionalsnow/weather days will be made up at the end of the school yearbeginning on Friday, June 14th.
Parent Pick-Up Guidelines:
The following guidelines were created to help conduct Parent Pick-Up in thesafest most efficient manner each day. Please read over these guidelines andfollow them whenever picking your children up at the end of the school day.
Car transportation occurs between 3:25 and 3:40pm; students remainingafter that time will be escorted to the office where they will call theirparents.
Under the guidance of a staff member, students will turn right whenexiting the front of the building and will wait on the sidewalk in that areauntil their parent’s vehicle pulls into one of the first three spots in line.
The front car shall pull forward until it is in front of the doors. Students will be dismissed to the first three cars only. If a student is not outside when his or her parent arrives, the parent will
be asked to pull forward and out of the line of traffic. Students will enter vehicles from the passenger side only (unless
assisted by the parent). Students will not be permitted to walk between cars unless a parent
escorts them. Parents arriving at the school on foot will need to approach a staff member and
ask for their child(ren) to be released to them.
Even with the cold weather outside, there’snothing that can warm you up more than a greatbig smile from someone, especially a child. Thismonth we will be focusing on dental health.
Good dental health is not only important formaking your smile beautiful. Your teeth providestructural support for the face muscles, are part ofthe digestive system, and are essential for speech.
Taking care of your teeth helps prevent plaque, aclear film that sticks to your teeth. This, along withthe bacteria and food particles left on your teethsoftens the enamel on the teeth until a hole, orcavity, forms.
So for a lifetime of beautiful smiles, keep on brushing!
Diane Schrimpe, RN
P.S. Keep returning those physicals, dentals& referrals!!
HEALTH ROOM TIPS
It’s important to encourage your children
to take care of their teeth by following these steps:
Brush at least twice a day, after breakfast
and before bedtime. Brush more often if
possible, especially after eating sweet
snacks.
Brushing properly breaks down plaque.
Brush all of your teeth, not just the front
ones. Spend time on the sides and in the
back of your teeth. Spend at least 2-3
minutes brushing. You can use a timer or
sing your favorite song to pass the time.
Be sure to use a toothbrush with soft
bristles and apply only a pea sized amount
of toothpaste to the brush. You should get
a new toothbrush about every three
months.
Learn how to floss your teeth and do it
daily.
Visit the dentist regularly.
Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and
limit the amount of sugary foods you eat.
We would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped with the teacher holiday social/luncheon. Theteachers always appreciate all of the hard work that the parents do. The food was delicious, the gift
cards appreciated and we send you all a giant thank you!
The teachers tell us that this is an easy way to return to school after the winter break!Sincerely, Ellen Gordon and Jennifer Oxfeld

January 2013 – Healthy Snack Ideas forBusy Kids
Presented by the Parkland Health and WellnessCouncil
The American Dietetic Association reminds us of things toremember when choosing snacks throughout the schoolday. Make snacks work for students by choosing nutrient-rich foods from the grains, fruit, vegetable, dairy andprotein food groups. Snacks can boost energy levelsbetween meals and supply essential vitamins and minerals.Thinking of snacks as mini-meals that provide necessarynutrients, while remembering to only snack whenabsolutely hungry provides healthy parameters. Great
snacks for kids include a small yogurt or a small portion of nuts. Keeping healthy snackssupplied throughout the day assists with controlling intake throughout the day.
Here are some suggestions for snacks that provide proper energy and nutritional value. Theseitems also make great lunch box items:
A variety of vegetables along with whole wheat crackers with a slice of cheese or a smallwhole-grain roll with some turkey, ham or cheese provide a portioned nutritional snackfor students during the course of a day.
Whole-wheat pitas with hummus. Trail mix (make your own with unsalted nuts, dried fruit, and dark chocolate chips -
yum). Vanilla pudding with fruit, or a cinnamon bagel with peanut butter provide needed
energy for active students and athletes. Oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, waffles, bagels and traditionally whole grain cereal offer multiple
options. Mix fruit with low-fat milk into a smoothie. Top pita bread with a sliced, hard cooked egg and a slice of cheese. Spread peanut butter and sliced banana on a rolled-up whole-grain soft tortilla An English muffin with lean ham and a low-fat piece of Swiss cheese. Mix rice with low-fat yogurt, dried fruits and nuts sprinkled with cinnamon
Wrap a tortilla with turkey, low-fat cheese and lettuce offers.
