The Dolphin The Outdoor Science Lab
By: Emma Bahr
The school year is halfway over and spring is almost here! I’ve heard about this outdoor science lab, and being new to the school, I wanted to find out more about it. To do this, I asked a few questions.
The first thing I did was I ask Mrs. Wise how the outdoor science lab started. Before Mrs. Wise became principal, she thought she should start an outdoor lab to carry on the learning environ-ment outdoors. So, when the N.E.H.S (National Elementary Honor Society) started, she thought she should put these kids to work to build the out-door science lab. They cleared trails so it would be safe for us to walk on. When it was fin-ished, they had a bench made and everyone that helped,
including Mrs. Wise got their names put on it. After my talk with Mrs. Wise, I can’t wait to go and sit on the bench and listen to a nature science les-son!
The next thing I did was ask one of our science teachers what kind of lessons they like to teach in the out-door science lab. Mrs. Steward said she likes to teach lesson where kids get to work with living things. Also the kids and teachers get to set up investi-gations in the outdoor lab. Coming from Chicago, a big city, we never had a backyard full of nature, and I really want to learn more about rabbits, butterflies, and flow-ers.
Finally, I asked a N.E.H.S. student, Madi Elish,
what there is to see and what’s in the different trails. She said that there are a num-ber of trails that go in differ-ent directions with a variety of trees like oak and maple trees. Like I mentioned be-fore, there is also a bench with all the N.E.H.S. names on it. On the different trails there are onion plants, also a log over a river. I hope we get to study those trees, give those onion plants care, and get to go over the river on the log.
Spring is nearly here! I’ve
heard so much about the out-
door science lab. I can’t wait
to sit on that bench and learn
about nature. I hope all the
other new kids at Lake Street
will want to do the same
thing!

Look what happened this Winter
at Lake Street!
March 14, 2013
Volume 4, Issue 2-Winter Edition
Hey Lake Street! On February
7th Lake Street PTO held the
Daddy Daughter Dance. It
was a little different from
last year, but just as much
fun. This year it was a carnival
themed dance. All girls from
Lake Street could attend the
dance with their dads or spe-
cial person. We played carni-
val games that earned us tick-
ets for the different raffles.
Games included bag toss,
sucker pull, and pick a duck.
We had refreshments and
danced the night away. There
was a special dance for just
the fifth grade girls at the
end, and it was really great.
We asked Ava Ziolkowski in
2nd grade what her favorite
part of the night was, and she
said, “I liked playing the
games. My favorite game was
the one where you throw the
clown nose in a popcorn buck-
et. I also liked the balloon
that was made for me. It
was a dog with a leash at-
tached.” Fourth grader
Alyssa Gargano liked danc-
ing the slow dances with her
dad the best. She also really
enjoyed the games and raf-
fle that were included as
well. We would like to thank
PTO and all the volunteers
for making this another
special night to remember.

Were you excited to hear
about how well Lake Street’s math
bowl team did? If you didn’t know
already, they placed 1st in the Crown
Point School District, and 2nd in the
whole state of Indiana! Have you ever
been curious about how math bowl
works and how they compete? We
asked some questions and got some
information about just what happens
on the math bowl team.
During a math bowl competi-
tion, three students must come up
with an answer within 30-45 seconds.
Each team has to complete and answer
seven questions in a round.
We interviewed Mrs. Nance,
Spencer Kennedy, and Gavin Tabor
before the math bowl competition
took place to give us some more detail.
We asked Mrs. Nance, “How many
teams usually compete in math bowl?”
She said, “Probably about 16 teams”.
Then, we asked her again, “how long
have you been coaching?”, then she
said, “About 10 –15 years; I’ve been
coaching for a long time.” We asked
her, “What do you like most about
coaching math bowl?” She said, “The
enthusiasm of the students on the
team to learn more math” Then, we
asked her, “Is this year’s math bowl
team going to rock?” She said, “We
are going to soar to the stars! They
are rock stars!” Now we all know that
Mrs. Nance was right!

We also interviewed Spencer
Kennedy and Gavin Tabor. We asked
them if they are learning any new
math skills, and they said they have
learned a lot! Then we asked them
how it feels to be on the math bowl
team and they said it feels great. Fi-
nally, we asked them why they chose
to be on math bowl team, and they
told us that they enjoyed math and
think it is very fun!
After reading this article, we
hope that you learned more about how
math bowl works. Make sure to con-
gratulate a math bowl student when
you see them for their big accom-
plishments!
Drug Abuse Resistance Education
By: Payton Smith & Cassidy Clark
Do you have any idea what
Dare is?! It is an awesome program to
keep kids out of drugs. D.A.R.E stands
for Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
Below are some interesting facts
about D.A.R.E.
Do you know D.A.R.E. was
founded in 1983 by a L.A police of-
ficer, and it is taught in 50 countries?
Do you also know why the mascot for
D.A.R.E. is a lion? For courage and
strength! The vision for Dare is to
teach kids good decisions, and for
them to make good choices and to lead
them to have a safe and healthy life.
We also asked Officer Ben-
son, Lake Street’s D.A.R.E officer,
some questions:
Q: What is your favorite part of
D.A.R.E?
A: Seeing the 5th graders interacting
with our high school senior D.A.R.E
role models.
Q: What is a drug?
A: Some sort of substance that chang-
es the body’s normal functions.
Q: How do we know not to overdose on
medical drugs?
A: Follow your parent or guardians in-
structions.
Trust us, D.A.R.E. is so much fun!
There are some very fun activities you
do during the D.A.R.E. program while
learning about staying drug free!
Hey Lake Street! Here is an activity called would you
rather for you to do.
1. Would you rather eat 10 live snakes or 10 live
rats?
2. Would you rather do someone’s homework for
the rest of your life or be invisible?
3. Would you rather be stuck in a tiger’s cage or
be stuck in an alligator’s swamp?
4. Would you rather be stuck in China where no-
body can understand you, or be on a deserted
Island?
5. Would you rather wear orange or beige for the
rest of your life?
6. Would you rather be a cartoon or a flat person?
7. Would you rather live in a lunch box or a smelly
shoe?
8. Would you rather be a computer or a T.V?
9. Would you rather go to school for ten hours a
day and have a bunch of homework, or go to
school the rest of your life?
We hope you liked this article! Please share this with
your friends and keep on reading!
On Wednesday January 29, 2014, the first semester awards were
presented. The types of awards that were given were: AR, A Honor-roll, AB
Honor-roll, Bucket Fillers, and Perfect Attendance. Each teacher presented
their students in their own class the award they earned. When students are
called down for an award, you come and shake hands with the principal, Mrs.
Wise. Then you go to the side with the other kids that got the same award
as you, and the Mrs. Hollis will take a picture for the school.
There are different grade levels and students that get awards.
Each student may or may not have a parent, grandparent, or guardian wait-
ing to see their son/daughter receive an award.
That`s what the award ceremony is about! I am sure we are all
looking forward to the end of the year awards ceremony!

Semester Awards Ceremony
By: Tara Djukic
Hey dazzling dolphins at Lake
Street can we say go USA? This year,
team USA did an outstanding job in
the 2014 Sochi Olympics! USA won 28
medals overall, with 9 gold medals, 7
silver medals, and 12 bronze medals.
Sochi is the city where the
Olympic Games were held. For those
of you who don’t know, Sochi is in the
country of Russia. The opening cere-
mony was a colorful and creative show
where we were introduced to all of
the countries who were competing in
the Olympic Games.
However, some bad things
happened during the Olympic Games.
The water in Sochi was unfit at times;
people were getting stuck in their
bathrooms and elevators, and during
the opening ceremony, only four out
of the five Olympic rings worked.
In the Olympics, there are
different kinds of metals athletes can
win: gold, silver and bronze. The gold
metals stand for first, silver for sec-
ond, and bronze for third. Many kinds
of countries compete, Russia, Japan,
Australia, Netherlands, and more!
It does not matter if we won
or lost all of the games, all that mat-
ters is that we cheer on team USA. If
you want to join the Olympics one day,
you have to be brave, and you have to
believe in yourself!
Myths BUSTED! By: Molly Tully & Izzy Nikruto
Have you ever heard a fact that you
thought may be a myth? We have found
some popular myths that a lot of people
believe, and we are going to try and
BUST them for you!
Do you think that food dropped on the
ground is safe to eat within 5 seconds?
Answer: If you think it’s okay to eat this
food, you are BUSTED! A high school kid
tried this myth and found out for a fact
you shouldn’t eat this food.
We looked up this next myth in the
myth book available at the Lake
Street library: It’s bad luck to pick
up a tails up penny.
Answer: If you believe in the bad luck,
then you’re BUSTED! There is no proof
that tails up pennies bring bad luck.
Did you know that humans use only 10%
of their brains?
Answer: Did you actually believe that?!
It is mega not true that humans use 10%
of their minds.
Myth alert: Women talk more than men.
Answer: BUSTED! Women do not talk
more than men. Sorry boys!
Sharks pulverize thousands of people a
year?
Answer: You are BUSTED! Sharks pul-
verize utterly nowhere close to thou-
sands of people a year. In 11 years,
sharks pulverized only 66 people in the
world.

You should tilt your head back during a
nosebleed.
Answer: BUSTED! Tilting your head
back is the exact opposite of what you
should do. Doctors have proven it.
How about those alligator living in the
sewers of N.Y.C.?
Answer: BUSTED! It would be too cold
for the alligators. When alligators get
cold their bodies go into slow motion.
That’s all the myths we have for today.
Go to the Lake Street library and ask
Mrs. Govert to show you where to find
them. Thanks for reading.

Every day the students of
Lake Street go into the lunch room
to enjoy hot or cold lunch. Have you
ever wondered what student’s top
picks for hot lunch are? Have you
ever wanted to make a food sugges-
tion? Keep reading to find out more!
We asked some Lake Street
students, and we found that anything
chicken, (nuggets, patties, or ten-
ders), and Bosco sticks are the most
wanted food items. Students also
like the new cookies and ice cream
choices. The least wanted food item
is turkey and dressing.
We also asked Lake Street
students what they would want to see
as food options in the cafeteria. Some
of the items they told us were:
smoothies, soup, eggs, steak, tater
tots, ribs and cinnamon buns. Lake
Street teachers would love to see: a
salad bar, soup bar, steak, lobster,
chicken salad and brownies.
After talking to Ms. Melinda
in the cafeteria, she said her favor-
ite part of her job is hanging out
with all of the students. She also
said that if you ever have any food
suggestions, to let the cafeteria la-
dies know, and they just may be able
to make it!
So remember to always
thank the cafeteria ladies for what
they do for us every day!

In the Xbox 360 game
Lego Marvel Super Heroes, you
start out as Iron Man or Doctor
Doom. You than can be any char-
acter you want, such as Thor, who
has a lightning hammer, Wolver-
ine, who has metal claws, or The
Thing, who has super strength.
After you pick your char-
acter, you then jump of the hel-
icarrier and help out the people
of New York. You can also go to
the prison and attack prisoners.
Don’t forget to visit
Deadpool’s room to unlock cheats
and comics. You can also go to the
hospital and customize charac-
ters. There are even girl charac-
ters, like the Invisible Woman
and Spider-man’s girlfriend,
Gwen.
To finish the game, you
work with the bad guys (even
though you are a good Super He-
ro) to defeat Galactus.
A fun bonus to the game
is to find all 50 hidden San Lees,
who was the creator of all the
Marvel Comics, such as Avengers,
Fantastic Four, and X-men. When
you find all 50, you unlock him and
get to play as him.
There are many levels
to this fun and challenging game.
Have fun unlocking different
characters and collecting Dead-
pool bricks!
One day, our newspaper
teacher, Mrs. Wool, had an awesome
experience when she was little! She
lost her tooth one day and was so
excited for the tooth fairy to come.
That night, about midnight, she
woke up and saw something that she
thought was the tooth fairy. She
was startled so much, she darted to
her parents’ room and slept on her
parents’ floor, thinking was it a bird,
butterfly, or was it really the tooth
fairy?
The next morning, she went to
school and told her friends, but
they didn’t even believe her!
Was it really the tooth fairy,
or not? The world will never know.

about how well Lake Street’s math
bowl team did? If you didn’t know
already, they placed 1st in the Crown

Street! Hey did you hear about the new
movie Epic that was released a while
back? Well, if you didn’t, then don’t wor-
ry, because I’m going to tell you how this
movie stands up!
Presentation
You can’t have a review without
presentation right? Anyway this movie is
GEORGICE, from the beautiful forests
to the dark and sinister rot, the direc-
tor, Chris Wedge, picked the perfect
setting for this movie. I’m getting ahead
of myself though, we’ve got a plot to
summarize! The movie begins with a girl
heading to her father’s house. When she
gets there, her father is working on
something and doesn’t notice her. After
a minute, they start talking. Mary Kath-
erine (the girl) wants to talk to her dad
about her mom and tell him to stop doing
his work, but her dad (Dr. Bomba) keeps
shoving her aside to work on studying
these small people ,leaf men, in the for-
est he thinks exists. Meanwhile, in the
forest, we are introduced to the leaf
men, the protectors of the forest, one
of the leaf men in training, Nod, decides
to quit and leaves the leaf men. The leaf
men are going to have a ceremony to see
who will become the new queen. They do
this by having their own queen (Queen
Tara) choose a pod to transfer her pow-
ers to. The caretakers of these pods
are a snail named Grub, and a laid-back
slug named Mub. Besides the leaf men
there are also the Boggans who are led
by Mandrake and his son Dagda. The
Boggans then attack the ceremony plan-
ning to kill Queen Tara, so they can
overwhelm the forest with rot. When
this happen,s Ronin, a leafmen leader,
shows up and saves Queen Tara, and
they fly away on a bird. While on the
bird, the two are chased by Mandrake
and Dagda. Ronin shoots Dagda with an
arrow but not before Mandrake shoots
Queen Tara with an arrow as well.
Queen Tara then falls to the green for-
est below. Meanwhile back at Dr. Bom-
ba’s house, M.K. decides to leave be-
cause her dad won’t listen to her. Before
she leaves, her dad’s dog, Ozzy, runs
off. While looking for him, she finds the
wounded Tara. Tara then uses the last
of her powers to shrink M.K. She gives
M.K. the pod she picked and tells her to
take it to a glowworm called Nim Galuu.
So then the adventure begins! Want to
see how it ends? You’ll have to watch it
to find out!

Cast and Characters
First up we have a cast to talk
about. Here we have Amanda Seyfried
as M.K., Josh Hutcherson as Nod, Colin
Farrall as Ronin, Christoph Waltz as
Mandrake, Beyonce Knowles as Queen
Tara, Aziz Ansari as Mub, Chris O’ Dowd
as Grub, Jason Sedeikis as Professor
Bomba, and Blake Anderson as Dagda. By
the way I didn’t include any characters
I didn’t mention in the presentation in
order to prevent spoilers if you’re plan-
ning on seeing the movie. Anyway, I’d
like to mention that this movie has a
really good cast of characters. By that I
mean that some of the citizens are lit-
erally bugs and plants (but cute and
adorable.) PERFECT for this movie! I’d
also like to mention that this movie has
a really good sense of scale. What I
mean is that the creatures look fuzzy,
the bugs and animals look huge because
M.K. is shrunk, and much more!
The Verdict!
So all together Epic is a fan-
tastic family comedy that has charming
characters, fantastic animation, beauti-
ful presentation, extremely nostalgic,
and overall a great movie, that’s why I’m
giving Epic 5 stars out of 5!
