18th Point Talburpin Sailors Get Together - Saturday 19 May 2018Tingira Club members Tony and Lyn Harland have announced the 18th Point Talburpin Sailors Get Together will be held on Saturday 19 May. High tide will be about 12.55 (1.85m) and they are proposing a start to the sailing activity at 11:45am followed by lunch under the trees on the Point Talburpin foreshore. For those not familiar with the format of previous gatherings, these are friendly get- togethers designed to encourage both local and visiting sailors to get out on the water in the company of other, like-minded souls, and enjoy the facility provided by high tide at Point Talburpin. Although activities are held at or near high tide, the relatively ‘thin’ waters in these parts necessarily restrict participation to dinghies (of all sorts and sizes), centre-boarders, catamarans, and other shallow draft vessels.

Prior to 11.00am: all boats rigged and gathered on the beach near the picnic area. (as this event is very tide dependant, it is important we start the activity at the planned time. The cooperation of participants in being ready by briefing time would be greatly appreciated) 11:00am Briefing on shore to confirm course, starting procedure etc.. 11:45am Start1:15pm On-water activity should be finished and social gathering begun 1:45pm Presentation of prizes 2.00pm onwards: Continue lunch and socialising

As with previous events, it is suggested that participants and friends bring a little food and drink to share at the gathering. A BBQ will be provided. (for those visiting in small

Serving tables will be provided, but folding chairs are recommended if you are coming by land. Readily accessible toilet facilities are available at the adjacent Harland residence. For those without boats and wishing to “have a sail’, there is a good chance that places will be available on one or more of the participating boats.

As always, we will welcome anyone who wishes to “just turn up” on the day, but if you let us know of your intention to join us, we will be able to contact you as early as possible in the event of cancellation due to weather etc..

T I N G I R A A H O Y !Tingira Social Kayaking Group CommencesThere was a pleasing roll up to the kayak group’s first session held last Saturday morning at the Tingira Boat Club. Before the group ventured out onto the water, Digby Huffam kindly demonstrated the correct way to hold and use a double paddle. This was a great way for those who were new to the activity gain some elementary skills in a friendly and relaxed way.Once on the water, the group paddled together close inshore to avoid the fresh SE wind that was blowing and made their way to just south of Thompson’s point. The return trip was made easy with both the tide and the wind helping to push the paddlers back home to the Club. It was amazing to see how rich the bird life is around the Island with numerous sightings of pied stilts, sea eagles, ducks and oyster catchers. After the gear was put away it was up onto the deck for a cup of coffee (or tea) and a friendly chat. What a great way to spend a morning with great company!

Experienced kayaker Digby Huffam offers advice to Elan, Alex and Ammitha how to correctly hold and effectively use a double paddle.

The outrigger canoe crew have been busy out and about on the water during the week. They have certainly put some time in - practicing for the Canoe Race no doubt. Kerri Otter sent me this beautiful photo (taken from the outrigger canoe) of pelicans resting on a pontoon in Lucas Passage. - What a beaut place we live in!

So what do you call a group of pelicans?Mr Google told me: “A group of pelicans has many collective nouns, including a "brief", "pod", "pouch", "scoop", and "squadron" of pelicans”

I think I prefer a squadron of pelicans best

A thank you to Vice-Commodore Ron Boulton who attended the ANZAC Day dawn service at

Pat’s Park last Wednesday and laid a wreath on behalf of the Tingira Boat Club.
