M omentum, an oil- field engineering services firm, re- cently used an unu- sual method for installing an offshore DANA LWS (Light Weight Structure) platform. Dubai-based Momentum installed the LWS for PCPP, a joint venture between Petro- nas Carigalli, PetroVietnam and Pertamina of Indonesia, in 50 metres of water off the coast of Malaysia. Instead of using a derrick barge to install the platform, which is a costly and the more usual process, Momentum loaded the struc- ture on to a barge and installed the structure using a Jackup drilling rig. Traditionally, these struc- tures are installed using a derrick barge at a far greater expense to the client. “Momen- tum continually seeks inno- vative and cost effective solu- tions for their clients”, says Jimmy Larsen, deputy manag- ing director. The company leveraged its 25 years of experience in off- shore operations to complete the installation of the platform – which including the jacket, platform and boat landing weighed over 300 tonnes – on time and without incident. Speaking to Oil & Gas Middle East, Larsen says that Momen- tum is looking towards “excit- ing developments in Malaysia and Iraq,” with these prospects coming off in the successful PCPP installation and a con- tract to supply US giant Baker Hughes with a 750 HP drilling rig in Iraq. Momentum is regis- tered in Ireland and in addition to its Dubai headquarters has offices in Azerbaijan, Turkey and London. The 300-ton unit was installed on time and without any lost time incidents.

“We are also known for our rig refurbishing programme and our success in port man-agement,” Larsen says. Momen-tum’s drilling division owns and manages both onshore and off-shore drilling rigs.

The company prides itself on delivering projects in diffi-cult, harsh, and remote environ-ments, and has built its reputa-tion providing innovative drill-ing and engineering solutions to increasingly cost-conscious con-tractors. “A part of our business which is doing really well takes

full project management respon-sibility – design of the drilling rig; fabrication, upgrade, or refit-ting; site installation; and final commissioning,” says Larsen.

The firm set foot in the Cas-pian region in the early 1990s, owning and operating three onshore drilling rigs in Azerbai-jan. The rigs ranged from 750HP to 2,000HP with which Momen-tum drilled more than 300 wells.

The company then established a regional hub in Baku in 1999 and a further office in Ashqabad, Turkmenistan in 2008. Larsen tells Oil & Gas Middle East that Momentum sees the Cas-pian as “as a huge opportunity. It’s still a really dynamic market for us.”

The firm is currently under-taking sub-sea hyperbaric weld-ing of strengthening plates for repeat client Petronas, using processes developed and designed in-house by Momen-tum engineers.
