From the Deputy’s Desk ________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Protecting Your Child’s Online Privacy From sharing pictures of a child’s first day at school to key moments at high school, many adults don’t consider the potential risks or breach of future privacy for kids. In fact, it is now become a ritual to announce the full name and date of birth of a child online within hours of them being born. This is just the beginning of a child’s digital footprint. Although children are now ‘born digital’, exposure in the online world can present just as many risks as the physical world can pose. Images and identifying details can be used for numerous activities that put your child at risk, from stalking, to cyberbullying, identity theft, and even digital kidnapping. The Australian eSafety Commission warns that half of all images on paedophile image-sharing sites originate from social media sites and blogs. Parents are responsible for protecting kids until they are old enough to make their own decisions about their online presence. So, what can parents do? Start by ‘thinking privacy’ before posting images of children online. You’ll be protecting their digital footprint and setting them up for a healthy relationship with the digital world. Seek consent Always ask others before sharing images of their children, even your family. Speak up about how you feel about images of your child being shared. When your child is old enough, ask them for consent, empowering them to understand they have a right to their privacy online. As they become teenagers, hopefully they will have more respect for what they post online and have confidence to speak to others about their consent guidelines. Understand the settings Check the settings of your social media channels to ensure your posts are not public. Speak to your friends and family about this and don’t be afraid to ask for help to get it right. If your child has social media channels of their own, go through the settings with them to minimise the risk of unwanted shares. Think about the detail Avoid including children’s identifiable details such as school badges, logos, uniforms, name tags or identifiable locations such as your home area or school. Alternatively, blur these details prior to posting. Be selective Create a simple checklist to help make decisions regarding posting online easy. What do you deem appropriate? Are you happy to share images of your children in swimwear? Do you want to avoid full frontal face shots? If your child is old enough, explain why you are selecting certain pictures and not sharing others. If you have a teenager who is sharing their own images, talk to them about what is appropriate and potential repercussions of not setting boundaries. Remove metadata Metadata on digital images records the time, date and GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken and can be accessed through shared images, and your sharing service may record your IP address. You can wipe this information with appropriate software or share screenshots of your photos to avoid metadata sharing. Screenshot sharing creates a lower resolution photo, so it’s less likely to be tampered with by a third party. Think ‘privacy first’ to reduce many of the risks involved with image sharing. Have conversations with your children to instil this mentality; help them build empathy; and identify the steps for minimising risk whilst helping them build a healthy relationship with technology so they can become responsible digital citizens. Community Service On Saturday, 24 August the College Working Bee will take place for Term 3. This is a great opportunity for members of our College Community to come together and serve on this day. Mr Schroder and the Property Team plan specific focuses for the day and appreciate the efforts of all who turn up and assist. The College would like to encourage students to allocate a small amount of time and attend on the day with the more numbers turning up contributing to a "We" focus that supports keeping the College grounds in fine condition. All students who attend the Working Bee will be issued with a Community Service Merit and will gain a point for their House toward the Overall House Shield. All student leaders are encouraged to ensure they attend as part of their leadership roles here at the College. Fortnite and Gaming Tips In 1978 the first Space Invaders machine was unpacked at an arcade in Japan. Since then, adults have had concerns over young people losing their souls to video games. Gaming is now everywhere. After 40 years, the gaming industry has become very accomplished at creating powerfully addictive entertainment. The obvious example in 2019 is Fortnite, an online shooter which, in its famous (and free) Battle Royale mode, pits the player against up to 99 other combatants in a cartoonish fight to the virtual death. Bright and playful (and lacking gore), Fortnite has become a phenomenon since launching in 2017. Fortnite appeals to a broad demographic as its free to download, fun, colourful. Although we have seen changes when we discuss Fortnite in-school talks from elation (where the whole room would scream with excitement no matter what the age group) through to a collective eye roll (where some kids that still play it don't let onto their friends for fear of being seen as uncool). It is always played, and it is still being talked about at school. It is a global phenomenon, made even more famous by sportspeople celebrating on the playing field with Fortnite dance moves." Fornite has prompted a controversy over its addictive qualities. Stories have emerged around the world of teens and children playing the game for up to 12 hours a day. Safe on Social has seen this first hand with young people asleep in school libraries during lunch. Even if your child's Fornite "habit" is modest, you may have concerns as to whether your kids have an unhealthy relationship with the popular shooter game. Very few young people can stop after a short period as many games reward long playing times and playing daily. It is useful to look beyond the old argument of banning or not prohibiting games outright. Rather than banning, we need to look closer at the time spent online gaming is time not spent playing outside developing physical and social skills, time spent doing activities that are proven to increase happiness and wellbeing. Pastoral Matters - Senior Years 9-12 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Sleep Hygiene - Teen Tiredness Teenagers require about nine hours of sleep per night. However, a recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found 70% of high school students get insufficient sleep on school nights. In fact, as a group, Australian adolescents rank as the third most sleep deprived in the world. Due to multiple reasons for teen tiredness, it’s easier to consider three distinct categories: (or a combination of the three)

1. Those who simply don’t get enough sleep - ‘won’t sleepers’.

2. Those with a late body clock - ‘can’t sleepers’.

3. Those with psychological issues that prevent them from getting to sleep on time - ‘worried can’t sleepers’. Poor sleep patterns can have a negative impact on learning and memory, emotional and mental health, behaviour and lifestyle, and body systems. Parents are encouraged to consider the following practical strategies for improvement in the sleep health of young people. Step 1: Have a chat about the power of a good sleep routine - earlier-age chats are better as sleep deprivation can become progressively worse. Mention the emotional, learning and even sporting benefits. Step 2: Establish a pre-sleep routine - suggest a couple of routine relaxing activities 30 minutes before going to bed. This separates ‘alerting’ activities from sleep. Step 3: Retrain the brain - a straightforward suggestion of ‘bedtime and lights out at the same time’. This will take time and improvement will be gradual. Step 4: Avoid having digital devices in the bedroom - not likely to be a popular topic of conversation! Electronic screen behaviour is hard to change. Develop some guidelines, such as charging devices away from the bedroom, to create an environment that is conducive to sleep. Optimising moods, happiness and education through good sleep health is a great investment, despite the difficulties you may encounter along the way. During Week 5, Year 11 will be attending a ‘Sleep Hygiene’ Seminar at the College to learn more about the importance of smart sleep habits. Further information for parents can be accessed via the following websites: https://thesleepconnection.com.au/ Useful website providing valuable information, resources and videos on sleep health. http://www.sleepshack.com.au/ Educational tool aimed at helping parents understand sleep science and health. Online sleep diagnostic and treatment platform for teens. Year 12 visit classes T-4! This week Year 12 students visited classes from Transition to Year 4 as part of the College Prayer Buddy Program. Students had the opportunity to introduce themselves to the classes and share something unique about themselves. Throughout Term 3 the various classes will pray for their Year 12 Buddies as they face their final exams and make preparations for Graduation. There will be further opportunity for Year 12 to revisit the classes and establish a stronger connection with the younger students. Vietnam Mission Trip 2020 - Expression of Interest Forms A reminder that applications for the Vietnam Mission Trip 2020 are due to Student Reception by Wednesday, 11 September (Week 7). This includes a completed ‘Expression of Interest’ form and initial instalment. All further inquiries should be directed to [email protected] Mrs Emily Madden Pastoral Care Coordinator 9-12

Year 11 Time Management and Study Skill Sessions - Monday, 26 August On Monday, 26 August Year 11 students will be involved in two sessions run by Elevate Education. The time management session will provide advice on time management, helping students develop routines, balance study and lifestyle, utilise study groups to leverage time as well as techniques for overcoming procrastination. The study skills session will help students utilise the syllabus to frame study, structuring and reviewing organised notes, methods to develop deep understanding as well as utilising practice exams and developing independent learning. Year 12 Finishing Well With the Trial Examinations now concluded, Year 12 have a great opportunity to reflect on their study patterns in preparation for the final sprint to the finish line. Year 12 are encouraged to listen carefully to the feedback given by their teachers after the Trials and look to apply this as they continue to prepare for the HSC Examinations. The remaining five weeks for Year 12 students are important ones and I am confident that our current cohort will remain focused over this time ensuring they continue to meet College expectations. Year 8 Academic Interviews Teaching and Learning Coordinators and other Senior Staff at the College will be interviewing all Year 8 students with regard to their academic progress. Parents will receive a letter in the coming weeks from myself providing an overview of the feedback students will provide as well as a copy of your child’s individual learning goals. Students will be recording these learning goals on their Edumate portal. I encourage you to take the time to discuss the process and their learning goals with your child. HSC Performances Congratulations to Year 12 Dance and Year 12 German students who have now completed their Practical HSC exams. The Dance students were marked by visiting HSC examiners on Friday, 16 August here at the College. The girls performed a number of items including a dance which they had choreographed and then taught to a younger student. Miss Valente and I were very proud of the girls and the mature way in which they conducted themselves. The German students travelled to Edgecliff in Sydney in Saturday, 17 August where they each completed a 10 minute interview in German with an examiner. It is an admirable talent to be able to speak to a stranger in a different language and I am very proud of our students. We wish Year 12 all the best for their remaining examinations. Language Perfect World Championships Students in Years 7-12 will be competing against other schools in the Language Perfect World Championships. This year the competition only lasts for seven days from Tuesday, 27 August until Tuesday, 3 September. Certificates will be presented to students who reach Elite, Gold, Silver and Bronze for German. Last year Wollondilly ranked 3rd for German and we are looking forward to some fierce competition again this year. Mrs Carolyn Clark Acting Head of Creative Arts & LOTE

WAC Kids Care Program Students from Year 9 and upwards have been volunteering in a new extra curricular activity that the College is running on a Wednesday after the College day. Students have elected to work with the existing WAC Cares ministry and will be involved in cooking meals at the College that will help support this community initiative. Students have completed the necessary safety and hygiene requirements to be working in a commercial kitchen and have been involved in menu design to ensure a range of meals are being made each week. Through this program the students are not only practising their kitchen skills, but they are also assisting and providing an important community service. I would personally like to thank the students for being willing to get involved in this program and look forward to working with them each week after the College day. Mrs Kelly Evans TAS Coordinator

Sturt IRC Makerspace activities _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Sturt IRC Makerspace activities In the Makerspace in Term 2 students were busy building bridges out of paddle pop sticks and it has been a great to see them improving their design and building skills. Last week the bridges were tested to see which design was the strongest. Congratulations to Luke Byrnes, Gideon Meischke and Kyran King whose bridge held a whopping 40kg. It is amazing that they were able to get a bridge built out of only 80 paddle pops sticks to hold such a large mass. Well done boys! They now have their names on the WAC bridge building trophy and it will be interesting to see if someone is able to better their achievement next year. In the Makerspace this Term, students will have the opportunity to use STEM hydraulics kits to build a cart that will propel itself. The aim will be to create a cart that will travel 4m in the shortest possible time using only hydraulics to make it move. It will be open to all secondary students and they will use wooden building pieces, plastic hoses and syringes to create a functioning cart. Students need to arrange themselves into teams of two to four people and put their names on the signup sheet in the Sturt Makerspace. It should be a great challenge and I look forward to seeing who is able to build the fastest cart. Mr Wayne Baulch Secondary Learning Innovations Coordinator

Spike - An Echidna’s Journey T-2 classes were entertained and delighted by Jenni Ellis from Little Wing Puppets last Friday. Told through the art form of contemporary shadow theatre, Spike - An Echidna's Journey was entertaining and fun as well as a catalyst for a discussion about bullying, difference and belonging. Spike also explained the remarkable biology of Australian animals, especially the echidna, which is one of the only egg laying mammals in the world. After the performance, there was a demonstration of the techniques of shadow puppetry. Jenni showed the students how easy it is to make your own shadow puppet. Mrs Justine Colombo College Librarian

HSC Economics excursion to UOW ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

The University of Wollongong is facilitating and hosting a study day for HSC Economics students. We believe the day will be of value to the students as they prepare for the HSC examination. The College is, therefore, facilitating attendance at this event for the Year 12 Economics class. It will be held on Tuesday, 3 September 2019. Students will travel to and from the University via a College provided transport, departing the College at 8.10 am (first session begins at 9.30 am) and returning to the College by approximately 3.30 pm (last session finishes at 2.15 pm). Students will need to make alternate arrangements if they normally catch the bus home. Students must wear their Winter College uniform. I am really looking forward to what promises to be a valuable experience and I thank you for your support. Mr Jay Hart HSIE Teacher

Secondary Sport _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

NASSA AFL Boys and Girls Champions! This Monday we had two teams contest the U/15 NASSA AFL Gala Day. It was a fantastic day of competition in tough conditions with the girls remaining undefeated to be named outright Champions whilst the Boys were named Joint Champions! The girls’ team started in impressive form with a 54-0 win over Georges River and then a closer 9 point win over Thomas Hassall Anglican College. The defence from the girls was amazing in their last three matches with a 14 point win over Macarthur, a 29 point win over Penrith Anglican and in their last match held Broughton Anglican College scoreless. An amazing statistic from the girls’ side saw them score 119 points on the day and only concede 8 points! This is testament to their defence and strong tackling particularly from Caitlyn Fitzgerald, Samantha Cefai and Aleisha McGookin. The boys’ team made a great start to the day defeating Georges River Grammar and Thomas Hassall Anglican College. The third game was a tight tussle against Macarthur Anglican, narrowly losing 15-13. Immediately after this game the boys’ side bounced back and comprehensively won against Penrith Anglican. In the last game of the day the momentum continued, posting a large score against Broughton Anglican. Well done boys on conducting yourselves so well and gaining such a tremendous result. Round 4 MISA It was another successful round in the MISA competition with 4 wins, 3 draws and only 2 losses. The Girls’ Year 10/11 AFL and Year 7/8 Netball sides remain unbeaten after the first 4 rounds of competition. In the AFL match it was a convincing 63-12 win over OPAC whilst in Netball it was a dominant 21-5 win. Unfortunately, in the Year 9/10 Netball match a strong finish was not enough in their 9 point loss. In Soccer we had mixed results this week. The Year 7/8 Boys’ side had an impressive 3-2 win over Broughton whilst a late equaliser in the Girls’ match resulted in a 1-1 draw. The 9/10 Boys’ side had a tough match missing several players, going down 6-1. The Boys’ Indoor Cricket side had a positive 58-42 win and currently sit in 2

nd place overall.

In Rugby League, Noah Ross was the standout this week helping the team to a 16-10 lead with minutes remaining. Unfortunately, a late try and successful conversion from the opposition resulted in a 16-16 draw. In the Boys AFL it was a similar result. After leading comfortably at half time a late surge from the opposition resulted in a 30-30 draw. Next week our Soccer and Netball teams have a bye round and will train whilst AFL, Cricket and Rugby League all have matches against Macarthur Anglican and Freeman Catholic College. MISA Golf Day Any student who wishes to be involved in the MISA Golf Tournament needs to express their interest to Mr Goldsbrough by this Friday via email. This event will be held on Wednesday,11

September at

Camden Lakeside and is open to both male and female students in Years 7-12. There are two divisions to account for those with and without a current golf link number/handicap score. Please note this is an individually nominated event and staff supervision and a bus will not be provided.

NASSA Athletics - 3

rd Place Finish

On Thursday, 15 August the College sent a team of 61 athletes to compete at the Primary NASSA Athletics Carnival. It was a great event for the College with the team finishing 3rd overall, an outstanding achievement. A number of the students had spent Wednesday afternoons training after the College day in preparation and this hard work paid off on the day with plenty of personal bests. We had a student take part in each of the 100m and 200m finals races and even had three students from WAC line up in the 11 Years Girls’ 100m final, it was a great site to see. Congratulations to all of the competitors.

Kaitlyn Williams and Isabella Evans were crowned age champions on the day and along with 11 other competitors will attend the CIS Athletics Carnival at Homebush on Thursday, 12 September. These students include: Jacob Birta, Ethan Brooks, Kiah Evans, Alani Lindsay, Ailie Carroll, Ashton Bielaczek, Scarlett Frost, Cienna Obakpolo, Callum Cassidy, Heidi Jones, Holly Morgan.

IPSSO

No IPSSO games were played on Wednesday due to the Year 5 camp. Games next week will be played at WAC against Broughton Anglican College. Stage 2 games will start at 12.00 pm. Stage 3 games will start at 12.50 pm. This will be the final game of the Winter IPSSO season.

Teams that finish 1st or 2nd in the Southern Pool of IPSSO schools will have the opportunity to compete at the finals on Wednesday, 11 September. Permission notes for this event will be provided as soon as the positions are confirmed. It is quite close for a number of our teams this year.

Year 4 Excursion to Maritime Museum _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Last Friday Year 4 travelled to Darling Harbour to visit the Maritime Museum as part of our History topic from Term 1 where we learned about the First Fleet. The first part of the morning was spent touring the Endeavour where we learned about the ship’s journeys, its crew and the way they lived on the ship. Year 4 were taken aback by the cramped conditions and the knowledge that the crew lived on board for years at a time. Afterward, we went inside the Museum and saw several interesting artefacts including a replica of the plate left in Western Australia by Dirk Hartog, some fascinating navigation instruments, and very old maps of Australia not quite as accurate as those we have today! A fun day was had by all with a whole new appreciation being felt for an important chapter in Australia’s history. Some of the highlights of the day: I liked learning how they brought animals on the ship like a goat, some chickens, a cat and a sheep. The goat and the cat were the only ones to survive the journey because the goat died and the chickens blew into the water! Mikayla Frendo We got to see an exact replica of the Endeavour and every single room, including Captain Cook’s room. I also loved Mr Banks’s room. I learned the Banksia was named after him. Plus, I learned that in the crew’s room they had a cat! Tapiwa Garakasha All of us got to see how they ate, slept, cooked and drew their maps. To draw maps was amazing. They used ink and a special type of feather on a little cushion so they didn’t smudge anything. Alyssa Keaney I learned that they took scientists and artists with them on the journeys. There were tiny rooms for Captain Cook and Mr Green, who loved to study, and the artists as well. The scientist lived upstairs and demanded a bigger room. Working Bee - This Saturday, 24 August ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Our Term 3 Working Bee is planned for Saturday, 24 August between 8.00 am till 2.00 pm and there are a number of jobs which need doing. Planting of new plants in the gardens. Mr Edwards is excited about this and

would like some help getting this done. The College gardens have weeds and due to the drought some dead plants

which need removing. We will purchase mulch to be placed on them as required. A good job for our students is the picking up of rubbish around the field and College areas using

our rubbish tongs and bucket. The College carpark gutters can be blown and swept to rid them of leaves which can then be put

on the gardens as compost. There are some books to be covered in the Deakin 3 classroom. We would love a contingent of people to assist in getting them covered.

The Property Team will be here at 7.00 am to get things ready for an 8.00 am start. As part of this, we will have bacon and egg rolls for breakfast together. If you would like to join us, you are most welcome as long as you RSVP so that we can cater accordingly. As always a scrumptious Morning Tea will be provided by the Wollondilly Anglican Community Church and lunch will be provided by the P&F at 1.00 pm so come along with your smiles with the intention of enjoying yourselves at our Working Bee. Between now and then, there may be more jobs to add to this list so don’t forget to bring your gardening tools, utes, trailers, protective clothing and anything else you think might help on the day and enjoy the company of others while we work together. Prayer Points

We Thank God: For progress and the exciting, wonderful world we live in For the global passion and capacity for embracing change of Gen Z For His Awesome and Wonderful Creation

We Ask God:

That as the world grows more complex and we are able to achieve more things at a faster rate,

we can use His help to slow down and smell the coffee.

To prepare the hearts of those staff who He would have working here at the College in 2020

For wisdom and discernment as we seek His will.
