The Collect (Opening Prayer) for the Second Sunday after Trinity Lord, you have taught us that all our doings without love are nothing worth: send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whoever lives is counted dead before you. Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Reading from the Old Testament – 1 Kings 19:15-16; 19-21 Then the LORD said to Elijah, ‘Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. So he set out from there, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was ploughing. There were twelve yoke of oxen ahead of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him. He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, ‘Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.’ Then Elijah said to him, ‘Go back again; for what have I done to you?’ He returned from following him, took the yoke of oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out and followed Elijah, and became his servant. The Gospel Reading – Luke 9: 51-62 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive him, because his face was set towards Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, ‘Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?’ But he turned and rebuked them. Then they went on to another village. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’ To another he said, ‘Follow me.’ But he said, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’ Another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’ Prayers of Intercession The sick and those who care for them: John Leech, Esmé von Habsburg, Andrew West, Susan, Jenny Edwards, Margaret Montagu, Deirdre West, Barbara Webb, Beryl Scott, Elizabeth Perkis, Pippa, Jill Crossland, Susan Wiltshire, David Sawyer, Jim Heath, Ian Aslett, Issam Geib, Phil Gervait, Anne Smith, Gwendoline Lee, Chloe Grenier, Sarah Neve, Jean Talbot, Patrick Mills, Brian Doo

The recently departed: Arthur Maysey

Tower repairs Works to the tower should be underway at the end of the summer: the specifications have gone out to tender and a contractor appointed. The work will cost around £100,000, and we have so far raised £47,331 which is a great effort. We have been promised a grant of £8,000 from the Sussex Historic Churches Trust when the work is completed. Approaches are also being made to the Wolfson Trust and Rottingdean Parish Council. We have done well but there is still some way to go. Our concert series and Christmas Tree Festival will help, but if you have any ideas or contacts that might help make up the shortfall, please speak with Fr Anthony. The repairs are urgent and cannot be put off! Next Brighton Deanery Confirmation Service – Thursday 12th September at 1930 Would anyone who would like to explore the possibility of being confirmed (or even preparing for baptism), please be in touch with Mthr Lucy.

Do speak to Mthr Lucy if you have any questions or if you would like to know more.

School News: ‘What a wonderful week we’ve had, with Sports Day being the stand out highlight of this week! After so much rain overnight, there was some anxious, early morning checking of the athletics track to make sure we could still go ahead on the day. But thank goodness we did. What a great morning of sporting celebration! A competitive element was added this year, along with some changes to the events themselves, to ensure that we had an inclusive, challenging Sports Day for all the children at St Margaret’s. The children all gave 100% and there was a great atmosphere of sportsmanship and team support. Well done to all of the children at St Margaret’s – you were fabulous!’ Rachel Kershaw, Headteacher See the full newsletter at www.stmargaretscofeprimary.co.uk Open Garden – Challoners – Sunday 7th July from 1130 – 1600 (Admission by donation) Open Garden – Boxworth, 21 Tor Road, Peacehaven – 20 & 21 July from 1200 -1700 (Entry £5) Floodlighting – suggested donation £32.50 for a month The church is being floodlit at night in the month of July by Elaine Bowden in loving memory of Graham Bowden RIP, and by Sally Phillips in loving memory of Patricia Kemp RIP.
