Article 1● Lehmann et al. (2016) “Reactive attachment disorder and disinhibited social

engagement disorder in school-aged foster children—A confirmatory approach

to dimensional measures”

○ Connection between the foster care and orphanage system and attachment disorder

○ 122 foster children ages 6-10 year old○ When these children had experienced abuse, there was a strong

connection to attachment disorder○ Sean, the main character, grew up in the foster care system and had an

attachment disorder

Article 2

● Van der Put and de Ruiter (2016) “Child Maltreatment Victimization By Type In

Relation To Criminal Recidivism In Juvenile Offenders.”

○ sampled 10,111 boys and 3,502 girls ages of 12 -18 who had been

convicted in a juvenile court

○ Studied relationship between child abuse and juvenile delinquency, found

strong connection

○ Will was abused as a child and found himself frequently in trouble with the

law

Article 3

● Farineau, H. M. (2016). An Ecological Approach to Understanding Delinquency of Youths in Foster Care.

○ youths with a history of maltreatment were 55% more likely to be arrested and 96% more likely to commit a violent crime

○ 24–29% of youths specifically in foster care placements were diagnosed with severe behavioral disorders involving delinquent behavior

● Suggestions○ an ecological approach to handling youths in the foster care system is beneficial as it is

important to consider not only the adolescent’s individual characteristics, but more importantly one must consider the various contexts within which the adolescent operates. (Farineau, 2016)

Course ConceptsBandura’s Social Cognitive Theory

- A cognitive process that includes elements of the personal, environmental, and behavioral factors all influencing each other

- Environment was negative/abusive→ Bad behavior/arrests→ Poor personal self-concept/fearful of change/unable to trust

Course Concepts Continued… Transformational Learning

- Learning that constitutes a change in one’s core

beliefs

- Trial and error, critical reflection, personal

evaluation, common understanding, and

cognitive, physical and emotional development,

life experience.

Will gained transformational learning through...

- Skyler’s love, care and interest

- Sean’s inspiration, friendship, and loyalty

- “It’s not your fault” scene

Course Concepts Continued… Crowthers Four Assumptions: Focus on 3rd and 4th Assumption

- There are barriers; not resistance

- Learners are abstract and have not yet reached full development to truly know

everything there is to know about the world.

- “I’ll bet you can’t tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. You’ve never

actually stood there and looked up at the beautiful ceiling; seen that.”

- “No one is perfect. Life is about finding if we, two imperfect complex people, are

perfect for each other”

Course Concepts

Maslow’s Hierarchy

- Issues of safety as a child

- Struggle with love/belonging throughout the movie

- Reaches self actualization

Course ConceptContextual perspectives

- Will is shaped in real time by his environment and the people he surrounds himself with

- Sean’s influence and Chuckie’s advice shifts the lens through which he views his life

TheoristErikson (1950)

- Will’s childhood continues to affect his adult life

- Struggle with trust and intimacy- Can move through other stages,

past abuse is a reoccurring problem- Erikson would say this is an

excellent example of his theory

THANK YOU!

HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!
