Children are always welcome in all our church services at St John's. In addition, at the 10:00am service there is Godly Play for children from three to twelve years, and our crèche (unsupervised) where parents can take little ones if upset or restless while still following the service on the large TV screen.

FROM THE RECTOR 30 November 2014

Dear Friends,

In our own day there are various religious sects who set themselves up as prophets of doom. But it is not the unpredictable date of the Second Coming which should take up our attention, but rather the decisive nature of the judgement it will entail— not only on the whole course of human history, but upon each of our personal lives as well.

Faced with the prospect of this Second Coming of the Son of Man, which can be neither predicted nor prevented, faced with this lengthy vigil in the night of this world, whose end remains in darkness, the best thing to do is to remain always on the alert. We must accept fully our responsibility with regard to our times and invest each moment with its full weight of eternity.

With every blessing,

Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

Advent – Count down to Christmas: Today, 30 November, is the fourth

Sunday before Christmas Day and marks the start of the Church’s new liturgical year. Advent (from the Latin word adventus meaning "coming") is a season observed as a time of expectant waiting and preparation both for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas, and for his second coming. Common traditions include the “Advent Calendar” often used for children to count the days ‘til Christmas, and the Advent Wreath used at St John’s. The wreath and candles symbolise the passage of the four weeks of Advent; the first candle is ascribed to the Prophets, the second to John the Baptist, the third (the rose coloured candle) to the Virgin Mary, and the fourth to the Church. A fifth, white candle is for the Christmas birth.

Advent Carols: In this service this evening at 6:00pm the Church rejoices that the purposes of God, foretold by the prophets and accomplished in the Saviour’s birth, life, death and resurrection, have been fulfilled. Please come to this service if you can and bring a plate to share for supper.

Empty Christmas Tree: St John’s is again supporting the Anglicare “Toys

’n’ Tucker” appeal and Dee Why Women’s Refuge, helping needy families to enjoy some gifts and festive food on Christmas Day. Please see notices in the lobby and take flyers for family, friends or neighbours who may like to contribute. During Advent, please bring your gifts (new, unwrapped presents or hamper food) or donations you wish to make, between now and 10 December. Anglicare will collect items that are left with the office on 11 December. Items left between then and 18 December will be donated to the Dee Why Women’s Refuge.

Christmas Carols: This year the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and

Carols will be held on Sunday 21 December at 6:00pm (please note the day).

Caritas: Everyone is welcome to the final meeting for the year in the Parish Centre on Monday 1 December at 7:30pm for a short service, fellowship and supper. Also a chance to think about next year’s program.

St John's Op Shop will be held next on Saturday 6 December, 8:00 to 11:30am. Help is needed, please, for:

o Thursday 4 December – emptying Op shop storeroom and stocking tables, 3:00pm.

o Friday 5 December – setting up and displaying stock for sale, 9:30am. o Saturday 6 December – putting away and cleaning, 11:30am

There will be a barbecue following the Op Shop (after packing) for all our volunteers and helpers. This is a small way of saying “Thank You” for all your support and hard work throughout the year.

Please contact the Parish Office (9971-8694 Mon-Fri, 9:00am-1:00pm) if you can help.

St John’s Fête: A big thank you from the Fête committee to all who helped in so many ways to contribute towards our successful Fete: those who assisted on the stalls, provided the goods for sale, helped with setting up and putting away, and importantly, who came on the day to buy. We cleared over $9,000 — a great result!

St John’s Christmas Day Lunch is on again this year! For information, please speak with Lynette Johnson after services or on 0408 254 125. Lynette writes, “We need helpers, including guests who can act as table hosts and welcomers. Donations of money, food, nibbles and other assistance are welcome. We have always had a wonderful time with our Christmas Day Lunch; I await your calls.”

Happy Birthday to Lynette Johnson (3rd), Ailsa Morgan, Kathe Swales (5th), Bob Satchell (6th)

Anniversary of Ordination: Congratulations to Deacon Jenny (5 December) on her 5th anniversary of ordination, with grateful thanks for her ministry in the church and among us in the Parish.
