A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

TENDING THE TREASURE When I meet with parents who are planning to have their child baptized, we talk about the rich treasures that God gives through baptism—faith, forgiveness, eternal life and a place in His family. We then talk about the plan God has for tending those treasures for His new child. I use this simple picture to illustrate that plan.

The new little Christian is surrounded by a strong coalition of forces to look after his/her faith and cultivate the gifts given in baptism. God’s promises are sure. He gives the gifts and establishes the relationship in Baptism. He then uses the family and the church community to help the child become what was given in baptism. We provide the environment and monitor the process of children becoming faith people. One of my favorite kid quotes is from a big brother whose sister had just been baptized. He told me “She belongs to God now but we still have to take care of her.” He had the right idea. God is always present but He calls the family and church to care for the spiritual growth of His little ones. Parents, according to scripture, have the primary responsibility for bringing up their children in “the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). Family prayer

time, devotions, Bible reading and “God talk” are all-important aspects of nurturing spiritual growth. Even more important is the faithful example provided by parents, grandparents and other caring adults. Children are nurtured as they watch adults and see what a life of faith looks like. Seeing adults pray, worship, forgive, serve and acknowledge God in joyful and challenging times is an invaluable part of faith development. Our church community has the privilege and responsibility for children, too. We do our “tending” by welcoming children in worship and church activities, appreciating their presence (even when they are noisy), praying for them, and providing Christian education opportunities. Our congregation is blessed to have the resources to offer quality children’s education through our day care centers, Celebration Lutheran School, Sunday School and Midweek School. We are especially blessed to have passionate and dedicated volunteers who lead children in their faith journey. (The next time you see a Sunday School or Midweek teacher, why not give a word of thanks?) We are now preparing for another year of Sunday School and Midweek School. Here are some ways these ministries “tend the treasure” and cultivate faith in the lives of our children.

GRACE. Each week students hear the Good News of Jesus and know that there is nothing that can change His love for them. They also experience grace as they are unconditionally welcomed, forgiven for any misdeeds and loved.

STORY. Students learn God’s story and see how He has worked since creation to rescue

them and all sinners. We teach the facts and concepts of Bible stories and lead children in discovering the God behind those stories.

FRIENDS. They experience Christ-centered, caring relationships with other learners and leaders. It’s fun to be part of a Christian community and to grow together.

MARKS. Our students learn the marks and disciplines of faithful living. They learn how to use the Bible, how to pray, how to manage and share God’s gifts, how to share the Good News. They are involved in serving and helping activities.

FAMILY. Each week students are given “God Talk at Home” leaflets. These are great resources for family faith-building conversations and activities. I’m happy to talk to you more about “tending the treasure” of faith for our young members. Give me a call or send an email if you have questions about our church children’s ministry, need Christian resources for home, or want to volunteer. Families can register for Sunday School and Midweek School by using the forms available in the lobbies and on our website at faithfoxvalley.org. Kathleen Lane

God

Family Church

Here’s an idea for families to bring God and faith into their conversation. It’s called GOD SIGHTINGS and is adapted from Children’s Ministry magazine. Use a fun container to store paper strips with conversation prompts to get kids talking about God sightings through their day. To make the strips more durable you can glue the paper strips to craft sticks. Have kids choose a stick at dinner or bedtime and talk about how God works in their world. Some ideas for the strips:

Today God helped me when… I showed someone God’s love today when I… I trusted God today when…

I know God loves me because today… Today I can thank God for… Something good I received from God today is…

“THE SIX” A Sunday Study at the Celebration Ministry Center We typically set aside one day each week for worshiping God at church. We receive God’s gifts. We sing. We learn. We pray. Then we go home. Home to live the other six days of the week. “The Six” is a Bible study, led by our pastors, on living the other six days of the week — living in a work environment that often challenges your Christian convictions, living in a neighborhood with people who embrace different values, living in a society that seems more and more distant from the ways of God. How are we to live? What do we say? How do we interact in times when Christians are a minority voice? “The Six” will explore topics such as …

The Supreme Court ruling on same sex marriage and its impact on the Church

How we engage our culture with love and truth

Principles for living out our faith in the age of social media

Addressing reasoned objections to God and our faith

ADULTS GROWING IN THE WORD

OJT = IMT

You hear a lot these days about on-the-job training or OJT. This is training that is very specific to the job one is going to do. Stephen Ministry offers IMT: in-ministry training. No matter what kind of training you’ve had before, Stephen Ministry will teach you what you need to know about how to do a good job of caring for others. Is God calling you to find out more about becoming a Stephen Minister? Contact Pastor Jim Wiebel ([email protected]) or Amy Cox ([email protected]) today for more information.

PRAYER NUGGETS Faith’s prayer nuggets can be used as a teaching tool or inspiration to pray more often. Martin Luther Prayer Stokes the Fire."If I should neglect prayer but a single day, I should lose a great deal of the fire of faith." Prayer is our Lifeblood "To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing."

CELEBRATE IMAGINE September 26-28, 2015 At the end of June, we came to the end of our Imagine capital campaign — a three-year journey that saw generous, sacrificial gifts of over $2.125-million. To every person who gave in faith: THANK YOU!! Pastor Aaron Rosenau recently said to a group of our church leaders, “I took time to do a little math. Do you know that because of gifts offered through Imagine we have already saved our congregation nearly $1.5 million in interest over the next 25 years?! I believe that is good management of the resources God has entrusted to us. And I cannot say thank you enough for helping to put us in a better position for whatever God has ready for us over the next two decades! Your contributions have been huge!” We have saved the congregation nearly one and a half million dollars in interest payments alone! And the principal on the mortgage that was $2.4-million three years ago has been reduced to $700,000. Incredible! That is an achievement worth celebrating. That celebration is planned for the weekend of September 27. We have also heard overwhelming feedback from the people of Faith, expressing a desire to do what we can to further retire the debt. So the weekend of September 27, as we celebrate what God has done through Imagine, we will ask the people of Faith for a special THANK OFFERING, given directly to paying the principal on the loan. KEY CONCEPT: On September 27, we will collect a one-time gift from everyone who wishes to contribute toward the retiring of our mortgage. (This is sometimes called a “Miracle Sunday” offering.)

Some may wish to give a single gift. Others may want to give a larger gift, but they want to stretch that gift over a period of 6-12 months.

Did you give a one-time gift at the beginning of Imagine? Are you in a position to give again?

Did you give an annual gift in 2012-2014? Can you give one more time?

Did you give monthly or weekly and wish to extend that pledge for another 6-12 months?

Are you new to Faith or to the Imagine campaign? Can you give a special one-time gift? However you choose to give to Celebrate Imagine, please consider this as an “above-and-beyond” offering. Faith still

counts on the regular giving for operational expenses. Please give according to your regular plan first; if you are able, consider a special thank offering in addition for Celebrate Imagine. The leaders of Faith are already pledging their gifts for September 27. A combined gift amount from our staff and volunteer leaders will be announced the weekend of September 13. Thank offerings and pledges may be designated for debt retirement using the blue “Imagine” or blue “Special Funding Appeal” envelopes, available at both Ministry Centers.

LifeTeam CHALLENGE

The LifeTeam Challenge: Try a LifeTeam for just eight weeks. That simple.

ROOTED IN FAITH

Grow Deep. Live Tall Coming 9.20.15 to Faith

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught,

abounding in it with thanksgiving.” ~ Colossians 2:6-7 (NKJV)

Our world and our lives are always changing. For good or bad, much of what we experience in life is in constant flux. How can we stay grounded in the midst of an ever-changing world? What can we hold on to when we are discouraged by so many things shifting around us? That’s what Rooted in Faith is all about — connecting the people of Faith with what does not change. October 31, 2017 will be the 500th anniversary of the Reformation — half a millennium will have passed since the night Martin Luther nailed 95 theses on a church door in Wittenberg, sparking important reforms in the Church. This is the critical message of Luther and the reformers: Jesus saves. We have favor with God, not by our status or successes or sacrifices, not by our decision or dedication or determination, but simply by God’s divine mercy in Jesus Christ. We are saved by grace. That is our Lutheran heritage. Over the next two years, leading up the Reformation anniversary, we will explore the major teachings of the Church that Christians held to be true long before 1517 — the truths of God that do not change as everything else shifts around us. As we dig more deeply into those truths of God, we will find God always calling us to live with courage, conviction, grace, and generosity. Grow deep. Live tall. As we launch into the Rooted in Faith theme, we will also engage the congregation in a LIFE-

TEAM CHALLENGE for anyone who is not already part of a small group at Faith.

LifeTeams are the center of Faith’s small group ministry. They offer the opportunity to explore the truths of our faith and to walk through life with genuine, caring friends — to ‘team up’ with people of faith to face the challenges and triumphs of life together. NEW LifeTeams are forming to coincide with the start of our Rooted in Faith theme; they will run mid-September to mid-November.

COMMIT: If you’re not already a part of a small group, we encourage you to COMMIT to a LifeTeam for just eight weeks. SELECT a day and time that fits into your schedule, and join a Team in a foundational study of what is most important to us at Faith. EXPERIENCE why so many people already involved in LifeTeam ministry wouldn’t want to give it up. We believe you’ll want to continue; but there’s no obligation past the 8-week study. ENJOY friendships that challenge you to grow in faith and a study that will help you identify and strengthen you in your life purpose.

MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH CHRIST IAN GROWTH OPPORTUNIT IE S

Summer is here! It’s that time of year for summer vacations, sports camps/leagues, summer jobs, summer school, fun with friends, and many other summer opportunities. The Board of Youth Ministry understands the busy schedules and other commitments students have. However, the Board also understands the importance of staying connected with a faith community. That is why, even though schools take a summer break, our Youth Ministry keeps on going. There are plenty of opportunities to en-gage in Faith’s Youth Ministry throughout the summer months - Noah’s Ark, Camp Luther, Lifest, and plenty of activities and opportunities for faith growth that will take place at both of our Ministry Centers. Keep checking the church bulletin, church newsletter, church website, and the F.L.Y. Appleton, WI Facebook group for dates, locations, and times for all of the SWYN ministry opportunities.
