Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 November 5, 2017
A Message from Father Joseph
Dear Friends,
The Month of November has begun. We have expe-
rienced the weather getting colder and leaves fall-
ing. This turns my thoughts to those whom I have
loved, and especially those who are no longer with
me. How appropriate, then, the Catholic Church
offers us the celebrations of All Saints and All Souls
as we enter November, the month of the Holy Souls
in Purgatory, the month we pray for All Souls in a
particular way.
As we live the Month of the Holy Souls in Purgato-
ry, it is good to remind ourselves of the Mystery of
the Communion of Saints. Of this mystery, the
Catholic Catechism says, “We believe in the com-
munion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are
pilgrim on earth, the dead who are being purified,
and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one
Church; and we believe that in this communion, the
merciful love of God and his saints is always
(attentive) to our prayers.” (no. 962). On the jour-
ney of faith to the heavenly home, we are in com-
munion with All Saints, those who have died in full
grace and are with God and with All Souls, those
who died in grace, but are in the purification before
entering Heaven. “Our prayer for them is capable
not only of helping them, but also of making their
intercession for us effective.” (CCC no. 958)
Then, Friends, during this Month of November, let
us, in a special way, offer our prayers for our loved
ones who have died, including our ancestors, our
parents, our family members, our parishioners, and
All Souls in Purgatory. We may offer Mass for
them, say a Rosary for them, pray for them during
our Holy Hours, put their names in the Book of the
Dead located at our churches and have the parish
pray for them, etc.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpet-
ual light shine upon them.
May the souls of the faithful departed, through the
mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

WHY ATTEND A FUNERAL MASS?
Although you may not know the deceased, it is one of
the Corporal Works of Mercy, to bury the dead. “The
Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings
of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat
all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They
"are charitable actions by which we help our neigh-
bors in their bodily needs" (USCCA). They respond
to the basic needs of humanity as we journey togeth-
er through this life.”

HANADI, MOHAMMED AND WAFA
CROSS OVER TO INDEPENDENCE
Hanadi ran a homemade perfume business with her husband. Mo-
hammed owned one of the country’s most successful engine repair
shops. Wafa’s hair salon boasted five employees. In Syria, they were
prosperous business people. But war and bombing forced them to flee
their homes and businesses for the unknown of Egypt, where jobs are
scarce — and discrimination and legal obstacles rampant.
Catholic Relief Services helps refugees through a project that pro-
vides business and legal training, and grants startup capital. Partici-
pants write business plans, and can take supplemental vocational train-
ing to bolster their technical skills. They receive ongoing legal and
technical support. The project supports refugees and asylum seekers from all nationalities living in Egypt, but
a significant proportion are Syrians.
“The goal is to go beyond short-term help and give refugees the tools and resources they need to become
productive, self-reliant members of Egyptian society,” explains Yumiko Texidor, who oversees the project.
“The training is meant to help clients establish more resilient businesses because they can better navigate
challenges and solve problems when they arise.”
The CRS project is funded by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration.
Within six months of opening, more than half the businesses generate a profit.
Today, Hanadi sells cosmetics and handmade perfume out of her apartment to clientele across Cairo. Wafa
has opened a hair salon called Damascus Girl and hopes to send her daughter to law school. And Mohammed
has used a grant to open a bustling engine repair shop that’s putting him on track to support his four sons, wife
and mother.

CRUSADER’S
CORNER
The 2017 God’s Portion Day Committee would like to extend a special thank you to all parish mem-bers who so graciously helped make our recent God’s Portion Day a tremendous success. The call was answered when we asked for tur-keys from HyVee for lunch. Tasty fish was caught and prepared for the fish fry and many homemade baked goods and pies were made to sell. Turnout was great on Saturday as everyone enjoyed the fish fry and auction. Parishioners filled the HTC gym during Sunday Mass and stayed for breakfast and the auction. The GPD weekend was a huge success because of continued support from Holy Family Parish mem-bers who donated and purchased items at the auc-tion, filled workers’ time slots, enjoyed the great food and spent time with friends. To you, we owe a gratitude of THANKS!

mation & the calendar: www.holytrinityschools.org.
