CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGETruly, these are challenging times. We would have heard this phrase many times over the last 18 months, but still needs to be said. The unprecedented pandemic is just through a second wave and it appears that a third wave is inevitable. We have witnessed horrifying scenes across the country of people suffering from the virus, needing very basic support in health care just to survive. Many voluntary organisations have come in support of the people’s response, while the government has been found wanting. It is a rude lesson to us that we cannot expect the government to solve all our problems and a heartening feature that civil society has to come together to face the crisis and give the necessary confidence to the people.

At REEDS, we have lost a very valuable colleague, Shri G Raghuram Reddy who has been involved in every activity of our organisation and a pillar of support throughout. To lose someone dear to this deadly virus reminds us of the tragedy that is at all our doorsteps.

REEDS has been doing its bit during the year without losing focus on its main objectives. The successful program monitoring of the Government of India’s flagship programs is a sample of REEDS ability to mobilise resources and also its confidence in its dedicated staff and volunteers. To achieve it in the state of Tamil Nadu, an area where we had not really worked much before is credit to the field staff and the leadership provided to finish the work to the satisfaction of the stakeholders.

We have also taken some unique initiatives in promoting access to drinking water in new geographies,( UP and Punjab), a sector which is close to the heart of our organisation. More than a lakh people have benefited from this work till date. Our work on skill development needs an urgent impetus and we hope to build on the rich experience and the networking abilities during the year.

We see the next year as filled with opportunities. We have the confidence to build on our strengths and the resilience to last the difficult times.

As Shakespeare said

“Sweet are the uses of Adversity,Which, like the toad, ugly and venomousWears yet a precious jewel in its head...”

We will find “sermons in stones and good in everything”. The Corona virus cannot and should not defeat our spirit of service and faith in human endeavor for the good of all.

SECRETARY’S REPORTUnlike every year when we are always excited to present our Annual Report, it is a bit downcast this year. It is not because about our performance but the existing grim environment with country once again witnessing a record severe surge in the scourge. Yet, as obligated, on behalf of the Board of Governors, I hereby present Annual Report of the Society for the year 2020-21.

1. OBITUARYIt is saddening to inform about the demise of Mr. Raghuram Reddy G, our friend, supporter and a long-time Member of the Board of Governors passed away on May 5, 2021 due to COVID 19 related complications. With over 3 decades of service in Andhra Pradesh State Panchayat Raj Department, at various levels, his knowledge, network and expertise has always been a great source of strength to REEDS access to authorities, community reach and field operations. Irony is that a week before he was hospitalized, he participated in a meeting on proposed REEDS’ COVID 19 relief support to frontline health workforce! The Board places on record its sincere appreciation for the contributions made by Mr. Raghuram Reddy.

2. FINANCIALSFor the financial year ended 31 March 2021, the Society revenues increased by Rs. 6.8 m (35 %) over earlier year. This allowed us to involve ourselves in more interventions and importantly to extend COVID 19 related support. Following is the summary of Revenues and Expenditure for the year:

During the year, I had a privilege to represent REEDS on the Investors’ panel of two distinguished Institutions – Sri Karan Narendra Agriculture University, Jobner and National Institute of Agricultural Marketing, Jaipur - Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana – Remunerative approaches for Agriculture & Allied Sector Rejuvenation (RKVY-RAFTAAR) schemes that are meant to support the incubatees in promoting agripreneurship and agribusiness.

3.5. Safe Drinking Water: During the year REEDS received a Grant of Rs. 21.0 m from FMC India Private Limited, a leading agricultural multinational. The purpose of the grant is to install, operate and maintain village-level water filtration plants in selected affected villages under their India Pure Water Program with the local communities’ participation. As a collaborative effort, REEDS engaged Community Pure Water India Private Limited [CPW] for implementing the Program. The program coverage is as under:

Thanks to CPW continuous efforts, despite challenging environment, majority of the water plants are installed and functional. Every effort is being made to make the remaining water purification plants functional by this summer to ensure reliable and safe water to these severally affected communities.

3.6. Skills Development: REEDS application under DDU-GKY Skill Development program for skilling and providing placements to 400+ youths annually with Society for Employment Generation and Enterprise Innovation in Andhra Pradesh (SEEDAP) is still pending for further action. Selection process had been postponed due to COVID 19 in March 2020. We are hopeful, once SEEDAP initiates further steps, we will have an opportunity to be an agency under DDU-GKY scheme.

3.7. Waste Management: REEDS has been a proud participant in several interventions related to Swachh Bharat Mission, one of the country’s critical developmental mission – Clean India; and other WASH interventions incorporating capacity building, behaviour change and verifications in partnership with UNICEF and other national, state and district level agencies. Field verification of Open Defecation Free (ODF) Status in highest numbers (over 11,000) in 6 States has been one of our proud achievement!

There is no doubt that we are navigating through a crisis unlike any other. Looking at the
