JAWS (Just Another Weather Station)

• Pressure• Temperature• Humidity• Wind speed• Wind direction• Sun duration• Incoming and outgoing long and

shortwave radiation

• 2 Biral LPS (Laser Precipitation Sensor)– Uses an infra-red laser to measure water

droplets and snow that pass between its sensor heads, it measures the reduction in the received signal and the length of time of the reduction and from this it can calculate the diameter of the particle and the fall speed

• These are mounted at 5m and 10m to try to estimate drifting and blowing snow.

Currently measured

• Low and hi volume aerosol sampling. • Aethelometer (black carbon).• Surface ozone. • Mini Max DOAS (differential optical

absorption spectrometer)• CPC (condensation particle counter)

Installing this season• CO instrument.• Picarro analyser measuring CO2 and

CH4• Sodar• Some boundary layer meteorology on

the 30m mast• Paperwork is being prepared to apply to

have GAW global status

Snow sampling• Snow samples are collected and melted

and then the water is sent to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna for sampling.

• Snow pits are dug during the summer season to make measurements of snow density.
