3.2.11 Muscular system• We will learn about the muscular system by

taking notes and doing a mini lab• TEK 7.12BWarm up: draw the diagram describe the type of

energy at each point.

Muscular System • Function:

Produces the force and energy needed to put the body in motion

DON’T BLINK

• Keep your eyes open for as long as you can without blinking

Page 4: 3.2.11 Muscular system We will learn about the muscular system by taking notes and doing a mini lab TEK 7.12B Warm up: draw the diagram describe the type.

• Voluntary muscles: are the skeletal muscles you can control

• Involuntary muscles: muscles not under your controls, typically cardiac and smooth muscle

• Skeletal (striated) muscles: are attached to your skeleton

• Cardiac muscle is found in the heart• Smooth muscle: lines the digestive tract and

the blood vessels.

Working in pairs

• Muscles on either side of the bone contract or relax to create movement

Page 7: 3.2.11 Muscular system We will learn about the muscular system by taking notes and doing a mini lab TEK 7.12B Warm up: draw the diagram describe the type.

• Tendons are connective tissue that hold muscles to bones.

• Tendons, muscles and bones work like levers.

Muscle Fatigue Lab

• Problem: Does my left or right hand have more muscle endurance (strength over time)

• Research: Muscles need lots of energy. Muscle cells make energy by combining nutrients with oxygen. If it doesn’t get enough oxygen it creates lactic acid (fermentation). Frequent exercise increase endurance.

• Hypothesis: If I exercise both hands then ___________ because _________

• Procedures: 1. Count the number of times you can squeeze

a clothespin using your left index finger for one minute

2. Time your trials and record the results3. Rest 10 seconds and repeat this 4 times more4. Repeat this test with your right thumb and

right index finger. Record in the data table5. Construct a line graph using information from

the data table

Line Graph your data

• Title• Labels on x and y axis• Scale• Key

Analyze/ conclusion

1. Name one source of error in this investigation that could have affected your results.

2. If your hands get sore, what process are the muscles in your fingers using to continue the work of opening and closing the clothespin?

3. Look at your graph what is happeneing to the number of clothespins opening and shutting over time?

4. Which hand showed the greatest sign of fatigue?

• Recall: Muscles are responsible for movement• Summary: What are the three types of

muscles and where are they found • OUT: Name the major organs of the muscular

system

3.3.11 Building an Arm• We will create a model arm to show how the

skeletal and muscular systems work together. • TEK 7.12 B• Warm up: What type of machine is this.

Identify its parts.

Use your lab sheet

• Follow the directions on your lab sheet. • Answer the “patient chart” in complete

sentences in your journal

• Recall: All systems work together• Summary: Explain the limitations of your arm

model. • Out: Vocabulary you should know for your

quiz tomorrow: Bone Ligament InvertebrateExoskeleton Involuntary muscle CardiacTendons Joint VertebrateEndoskeleton Voluntary muscle Skeletal muscleSmooth muscle Lever
