33 CLEAN CATTLE Inc. PRIME BULLS 10.30am – Auctioneer: Richard Furnival

Few more about again today and a decent trade again, prime cattle in very good demand. Plenty more could

have been sold to vendors advantage today.

Overall average settled at 201.23p/kg which is 10p/kg up on the week, helped by a few more quality heifers

on show, overall heifers averaged 210p/kg today.

Top spot went to Steven Walton’s Phoenix Grain with his usual excellent cattle, this week topping at

244p/kg (x2) for 485kg limx heifers, same home also at 227p/kg and 220p/kg. George Rhodes with

excellent Limx heifers to 238p/kg, RS Cornall & Son with Baza heifers to 220p/kg. Andrew Fare topped the

steer section with lightweight Bbx to 214p/kg, Joe Lowcock with heavy AAx to 197p/kg, Limx from RS Cornall

& Son B&W’s to 181p/kg from T & E Garlick.

15 Bulls

Another good show of bulls this week, predominately B&W’s, top spot to Robert Fryars with B&W’s to

166p/kg, T & E Garlick at 165p/kg, Messrs Gregory & Dickinson at 158p/kg to mention a few.

53 STORE CATTLE 11.00am – Auctioneer: Richard Furnival What a real shame, we had buyers a plenty to day and more than double could and should have been sold on

that trade. Autumn turn in will soon be with us. There is an old saying “corn down, Horn Up” which is

certainly true at the moment. No real headline catchers today but I think most went home happy.

Trade topped out at £990 for strong B&W’s from Paul Slater, Gornall Bros with BB to £930, J Aspinall with

AAx steers looking well sold at £920, Andrew Rossall with AAx to £900, Richard Ayrton with AAx to £860, Frx

from the same home to £800 to mention but a few.

In the heifer section Mr Aspen (Poulton) topped with an excellent run of BBx to £930, Bob Kelsall with BBx to

£900, Gornall Bros with BBx to £870, AAx from Bill Berry to £750 etc

Lambs - Good number forward to last week, averages in line with everywhere else with an overall average

of 157.37p/kg 6.29p/kg back on last week, commercial lambs were harder to place. Buyers in a very lack

lustre approach to all but the very best today.

Top spot per head this week goes to K G Wilkinson with Texels to £78, followed by A Fare, KG Wilkinson,

T&EA Garth and Son with Texels to £74, T Jump with Texels to £73.50, A Birchall ,W R Berry and J Miller with

Texels to £73, R Seed and Son with Texels to £72.50, R Helme with Texels to £72, PF Lee ,L Goodier and R J

Byron J J &R Kelsall with Texels to £71.50, AB&J Parkinson, J&A Heap and Son and A&J Carr and Son with

Texels to £71, to mention but a few.

Top price per kilo went to A Fare with Texels to 180p/kg, followed by A&J Carr and Son with Texels to

178p/kg, R Seed and Son with Texels to 175p/kg, Beltex from A Pheonix to 175p/kg, WP Brewer and Sons

with Texels to 173p/kg, T Jump with Texels to 171p/kg, WR Berry with Texels to 170p/kg, J&A Heap and Son

with Texels to 169p/kg, R Helme with Texels to 168p/kg, and plenty of meaty lambs in the 165-160p/kg

Ewes A decent entry of ewes forward this week to top at £94/hd for a heavy texel ewe from R&J Capstick .

Averages came back at £51.27 which is a £2.25 down on the week but taking into account the numbers of

hill sheep in today very similar to last week. A few goats in today with trade topping at £55 from Lowbark

Farming Co.

Another good trade, there really is some trade for calves at the moment. A few more B&W’s forward today,

continentals still a serious trade and easy to sell, and with a ring full of buyers Brock really is the place to

sell at the moment.

Bull Trade topped at £395 for Aberdeen Angus from Tom Barron Farms Ltd, followed by others at

£385, £365 and £360, £345 and £340, Limousins from W&A Sudell and Son to £320, British Blues from C F

Halhead and Son to £300, Herefords from £275 from P Stott, Montbeliardes from D Hargreaves and Son to

£178.

Trade topped in the heifer section to £320 for a Aberdeen Angus from Tom Barron Farms Ltd,

followed by others from the same good home to £310 and £300, British Blues from BW&J Robinson to £255

and J J Parkinson to £220, Limouisn from ME&J Swarbrick to £240, Bazadaise from ME&J Swarbrick to

£210, Welsh Black from J&G Thornley to £125, and Hereford from P Stott to £75.

Holstein and Friesian bulls in demand today topping at £240 from ST Gardner and others to £230,

J&PB Singleton to £150, W&A Sudell and Sons to £140, BW&J Robinson to £138, CF Halhead to £110,

Friesians from CJ&JM Stckhouse to £160 with others from the same home to £155, £150 and £118, DW&S

Clarke and Son to £80, R&PM Butler and Son to £50, and only a handful of killers.

September’s winner of UNITED BREEDERS (6 weeks and under) monthly prize went to: Mr J Cummings, Brook Farm,

Penwortham, Preston with a British Blue Bull calf 16 days old, making £395 and purchased by Mr. Foster.

More than double the entry today which was positve, but I’m afraid that’s about all the good news I can

say. Trade still on the slide, end of last week trade dipped sharperly and we felt the full force of it today.

The overall average settled at 95.88p/kg which is 20 pence back this week. The market really has taken a

tumble as sale of OTM meat both in UK and export has dried up and there is plenty in the cold stores not

sold.

We did not have the the overall quality this week with no continentals or clean, Overall top spot went to

Mr Andrew Foy (Conder Green) with a Blondex cows at 130p/kg, in the clean section John Stott had clean

B&W heifers at 120p/kg. In the cow section , John Stott topped with cows to 117p/kg, Hesketh Family with

a good run of cows to 115p/kg, H Banks & son to 114p/kg, Alan Swale also at 114p/kg, Steven Forshaw ,

Myerscough College and F & B Holden at 113p/kg to mention a few.

Meaty commercial cows would be 100 – 110p/kg, plainer commercial cows also between 80 - 100p/kg,

plainer boning cows harder to place, but on the whole generally between 70 -80p/kg.

Top price per head went to Alan Swale with Cows to £974, Myerscough College at £960.

Overall average per head levelled at £615 which is approximately £80/hd down on the week.

SINGLE FARM PAYMENT RATES: Yesterdays confirmation that the 2013 Single Farm Payment exchange rate

will be €1 = £0.83605 means that, contrary to expectations, farmers in the UK will likely be better off than

last year when it comes to their SPS payments. This is based on a slightly reduced SPS rate due to the

implementation of the Financial Discipline in 2013, which is expected to be no more than a 5% reduction on
