Dear Temple Isaiah Family, As I write this, Tu B'shevat – the new year for trees– is coming to a close. This brief period in winter isan occasion to celebrate the promise ofrevitalization and to embrace each other. Trees ofthe forest, as beautifully revealed by PeterWohlleben, in "The Hidden Life of Trees – WhatThey Feel, How They Communicate", are part of acommunity quite like our own. A community – agroup living in the same place, or better, a groupembracing each other in fellow feeling – relies onstrong networks of unseen but deeply feltconnections. Without these, the trees of the forest would die. Likeus. The state of our own community is growing stronger: we havemany new members we will welcome at a special Oneg Rav thisFriday night, and those of us no longer new are coming to knoweach other better week by week, through coming to services andparticipating in our many opportunities for learning and enjoyment atTemple Isaiah events. And yes, we lose some loved ones too, andwe come to Temple to share the sacred space that shelters us toface the pain of that loss. This month, I have a few bits of news: we continue to make quietprogress on the key projects I wrote about last month. Theseprojects are the focus of our sustainability efforts, and they arecrucial to our ability to remain in this building beyond this year. Youwill hear more as we reach each critical milestone. Our two newest board membersplay major roles in moving us forward. Steve Gorosh, Temple Isaiah Secretary,is an attorney with deep experience inbusiness and finance and in leadingsuccessful startups – crucial skills for usin these difficult financial times. JoanBehrmann, who leads the 'kitchencabinet' – our kitchen recovery andrestoration project – is, with her husband Rabbi Nicolas Behrmann,a new member of our congregation. Long known to old PalmSpringers as the executive editor of the Desert Sun, Joan bringsextensive experience in short- and long-term planning, boardleadership, and creative innovation, and is a skillful public speakerand advocate for social justice. Get to know them!
We're bringing back the Memory Café in March. Thanks to member Charlene Taylor, we'll resume onMarch 1 and April 12, in our new 'back of the Bochner'space. And we'll be celebrating Pesach together with aFirst Night Seder, led by Rabbi Lazar! Look for
details, coming soon. Sharing Seder with your Temple Isaiah familyis a way to sustain our community and deepen those hiddenconnections that hold us close. Shalom,
From the Executive Director Douglas Morton
I want to take a minute and update youon the financial situation at the Temple. TheBoard approved budget for 2017-2018 thatincludes a $90,000 deficit. While it is thesmallest annual deficit in a long time, thisdeficit and any other unexpectedexpenditures will seriously affect what limitedcash we have available. The FinanceCommittee and the Board are now hard atwork exploring what our cash flow will look like at the end ofthe fiscal year and how we will cover this deficit. Please knowthat we are diligently working on solutions to deal with theimmediate future and long term realistic solutions.
