Determining the Equation of a Line with the Slope and a Point

If we have information about the slope and we know one point that the line passes through we can determine the value of the yintercept using the slope.

Ex. Determine the equation of a line that has a slope of 3 and passes through the point (2, 8).

Steps to determine the equation of a line:

1. Sub in the value of slope for "m"

2. Sub in the given point for "x" and "y" and solve for the yintercept (b)

Determining the Slope of a Line using Two Points

In order to determine the slope of a line, we have used the rise and the run of the line between two points.

The rise of the line is the difference between the two y values and the run is the difference between the two x values.

Then the equation for the slope is

If a line passes through two points  and

Ex. If a line passes through the points (4, 12) and (10, 3), determine the slope of the line. Will this line go up or down as you move from left to right?

Determining the Equation of a Line Given Two Points

A unique line can be drawn through any two points. If we have two points we can determine the equation of a line by first finding the slope (as we just saw), then using the method we looked at early with a slope and a point we can find the equation.

Ex. Determine the slope of the line passing through the points (3, 2) and (6, 8), then use this to determine the equation of the line.
