Our Strategic Goal
To migrate the ACS Journals publishing environment from a manual-intensive, print-centric production environment to an XML-based, fully digital environment, eliminating all human interaction beyond intellectually driven, value added operations.
A C S P R O P R I E T A R Y A N D C O N F I D E N T I A L
Our Objectives
Reduce the time to publication for existing product
Reduce the time to market for new products
Reduce production and operational cost
Automate all non “Knowledge-Based”, manual components of the publishing workflow.
A C S P R O P R I E T A R Y A N D C O N F I D E N T I A L
Our Objectives
Allow those involved in the publishing workflow to focus on intellectual effort instead of managing the flow of the content
Create a “Media Neutral” repository of content that can be easily repurposed as needed to better serve the scientific community
Enable derivative products using the primary publishing content
Enhance content to increase discoverability
Enhance value of content using semantic tagging

Results
We have reduced time to publication for all products on average by over 60%
We can now allow customer needs and business considerations to determine time to market and launch dates (technology and operational considerations and timelines are a minor consideration)
We have substantially reduced operational costs and expect further reductions as we continue to automate all non Knowledge based components of the workflow
A C S P R O P R I E T A R Y A N D C O N F I D E N T I A L
Results
We have been able to impose and validate business rules early in the process thereby avoiding costly cleanup of content at the end of the workflow
Technical Editing staff can now focus on content enrichment and semantics; not nuances of appearance
We have been able to easily implement tools for enhanced discoverability
A C S P R O P R I E T A R Y A N D C O N F I D E N T I A L
Results
We have moved from sequential to parallel processing of content for various delivery methods (e.g., print, web, mobile, etc.)
We can now easily package the same content for delivery on multiple platforms

Recommendations
Remember this is a business process initiative not a technology initiative. The technology is the easy part. Changing the culture and getting buy-in from the operational staff is the hard part.
View this as a continual improvement process not a project with single start and end dates. You can make substantial improvements in increments. If you wait until you have it all figured out you will never get it done.
