Waste is often disposed in our yards and neighborhoods. Some hazardous products are disposed by throwing them in the trash, pouring them in a ditch, dumping them on a vacant lot, or burning them in the “back 40.” Waste disposed in an open dump, or even underground, can percolate through the soil and contaminate groundwater.

To minimize the pollution potential from household waste, it is important to minimize the amount of waste produced, especially hazardous waste. Examine any activities that involve the use of hazardous mate-rials and make sure that you really need all the products you are buying. Carefully consider how to use the products safely and recycle or reuse them when possible. Dispose of used or remaining products in a way that will not pose a risk to surface water or groundwater. A few simple man-agement principles apply in every situation:

Follow the label.

Contain any unusable waste, spills, and drips for appropriate disposal.

Take uncontaminated recyclables to a recycling facility if one is available.

Never throw away or bury waste in the ground or in abandoned wells.

Do not pour waste down the drain.

spring cleanup continued

Farmington City has changed contractors for the annual spring cleanup from Bland Tree Experts, who has helped with the cleanup for over thirty years, to Robinson Waste Services. The first week of February, the city was informed that Bland is no longer in busi-ness. Due to the short notice, the city had to choose dates that work with Robinson's schedule.

The pickup is strictly for residential limbs and branches. The following rules will be strictly enforced:

Limbs must be cut so that they are no longer than 5 feet or wider than 8 inches.Limbs and branches must be stacked at the curb in a pile no larger than approximately 10 feet long, 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. Stacking limbs in the same direction allows for more vol-ume in the pile.Material must be placed at the curb before beginning collection day. Collection trucks will only drive by your home ONCE.No bags or boxesLeaves can be left in piles

Materials collected will be mulched at the Central Davis Sewer District Treatment Plant.Street sweeping will be done after spring cleanup is completed. Because they will plug the vacuum hose, the sweeper cannot pick up limbs or twigs over 6 inches long.

After the cleanup is done, please rake the limbs and twigs in your gutter and throw them in your garbage can.

This will help the street sweeper be more efficient.

Thank you for your patience during snow removal season. City crews do their best to clear city streets in a prompt, efficient and safe manner. Most Farmington residents under-stand the daunting task the city faces in predicting the timing of snowstorms and then responding in a way that satisfies everyone. Did you know that some Farmington streets are state roads and are consequently not the city's responsibility to clear? State roads include:

200 East from State Street to Lund Lane

State Street from 200 East to 200 West

200 West from State Street to I-15

Main Street from State Street to Shepard Lane

Park Lane from Main Street to 1100 West

Shepard Lane from Main to HWY 89

If you live along one of those roads, suggestions should be passed along to the state rather than the city.

Rendering of Renovated Courthouse Front Entry

Farmington, Utah www.farmington.utah.gov March 2020 Page 5

In 1929, Davis County Commissioners announced plans to enlarge the

county courthouse. Interestingly, the expansion was built around the 1890s red brick courthouse, so there is a courthouse within a courthouse. An initial renaissance design with a tur-ret entrance was replaced by a more traditional plan featuring a classical Grecian portico supported by six Ionian columns. The project was completed three years later in 1932.

A 1957-58 addition doubled the courthouse and another large

addition to the southern side was completed in 1979.

A 1997 renovation removed the ceiling installed in the front en-

try hall during the 1929-32 construc-tion, revealing the original ornate ceiling, now lighted with antique electrical fixtures.

The courthouse is again undergoing renovation. The current scope of

the new project is to remove the 1958 and 1979 additions while renovating the original historical 1932 section. This includes bringing the building up to current accessibility and seismic standards, while keeping historical interior finishes and exterior memorial elements intact.

The schedule for the project will begin in the spring/summer

of this year, starting with asbestos abatement and demolition services. Renovation efforts will continue into 2021 with planned completion in 2022.

Davis County is excited to bring this historical building back

into use. Various county legal departments will be located in the new courthouse, and there will be an event space for county functions on the second floor. The facility will be aesthetically pleasing as well as func-tional, with increased surrounding landscape, outdoor gathering spaces, and war memorials for visiting and viewing. The renovated county courthouse promises to serve the community for generations to come.
