Learning ObjectivesAfter participating in this CME activity, physicians should be able to describe and discuss evidence-based diagnosis and management strategies for:

• Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias

• Neuromuscular disorders• Sleep disorders• Neuropathies

Continuing this year is an opportunity for physician participants to earn up to an additional 16.0 credits for participating in a Performance improvement activ-ity related to dementia. This activity is similar to the expectations of ABPN for Maintenance of certification, Part 4. Chart reviews before the conference, attending a special session at the conference, and monitoring after the conference will be required to earn the additional credits. Contact David Charles ([email protected]) if you are interested in participating.

After participating in this performance improvement activity, physicians should be able to:

• More accurately diagnose Alzheimer’s disease versus other dementia types

• Obtain neuropsychological testing and brain imaging at the time of initial evaluation of patients suspected of hav-ing cognitive impairment

• Prescribe a cholinesterase inhibitor for mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease

• Identify and treat depression, agitation, and psychosis in patients with dementia

• Educate patients, families, and care-givers concerning the increased risk of driving accidents for patients with dementia

Lodging ReservationsAccommodations should be arranged directly with Palmetto Dunes Resorts. Reservations are subject to availability. In order to benefit from the group rate, you must identify yourself as an attendee of the “Vanderbilt University Neurology Symposium” or group reference #VANDy when making reservations. Please call (800) 827-3006 to make your reservations.

Statement of Educational NeedsThe US population is ageing and 10% of people over age 65 suffer disability from dementia and this number rises to 50% in people over age 85.

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved treatments for dementia. The American Academy of Neurology has pub-lished practice guidelines concerning the diagnosis, detection and management of dementia.

New diagnostic criteria aid clinicians in the identification of patients with demen-tia and the appropriate subset that could benefit from available treatments. As de-mentia progresses there are associated conditions, such as depression, and risks, such as falls and driving accidents, that are associated with significant morbidity.

Historically, there have been few treat-ments for dementia and many physicians continue to have outdated attitudes about the benefit of therapeutic intervention. New skills are necessary to appropriately evaluate and diagnose Alzheimer’s versus other dementia types. Many clinicians re-main unaware which dementia patients are most likely to benefit from new treatments. Others may not be competent to identify associated conditions such as psychosis and may also fail to alert patients, families, and caregivers about increased risks of falls and driving accidents.

Meeting LocationAll components of the 34th Annual Contemp- orary Clinical Neurology Symposium will be held at the beautiful Palmetto Dunes Resort on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Educational sessions, breakfasts, and conference exhibits will be housed in the Centrecourt Conference Center, centrally located within the resort community of Palmetto Dunes. The Monday evening Welcome Reception will be held at the Dunes House located beach front on the Palmetto Dunes property.

Registration FeesThe registration fee for this symposium is $600 if received on or before June 17, 2011 and $650 thereafter. The registration fee for residents is $400. Registration fees include access to all sessions, course materials, breakfasts, refreshment breaks, and a welcome reception. Spouses are invited to the welcome reception, but pre-registration is kindly requested.
