You may recall that in the May Newsletter David Mooney, from Ebor 41 Club, told us how a team of eight cyclists would be riding from John o’Groats to Lands End. Five of the group were from the original team of eight 41ers that made the journey in the opposite direction in 2010, and raised £23,000 for York Against Cancer.

2012 is the 25th Anniversary of the charity and this time they aimed to raise even more towards the charity’s target of £100,000. The team consisted of David Mooney, Iain Robertson, Michael Nicholas, Patrick Shepherd and Stephen Loynes from Ebor 41. They were joined by Rex Parry, Tim Risk and Iain Roberstson’s son Rory Robertson.

The adventure started at John O’Groats on the 2nd June with a planned arrival at Land’s End on the 15th. Over 1,000 miles in just 14 days. They arrived at Bodmin on day 13 as planned and completed the ride on the next day. In David’s own words:

“Day 14 to Lands EndFour Seasons in One Day is the only way to describe

the day. It was lashing down at one point but by the end of the ride we were dry because of the wind. The wind was very strong and either into our faces or coming from the left side. EditorialTime For A Change

It is nearly three years since I volunteered to produce a trial club newsletter for a six month experimental period. I was not sure how a monthly e-mailed communication would be received and created most of the first edition whilst on a cruise in the Mediterranean. Editing such a newsletter takes a great deal of time and keeping the content fresh becomes harder and harder with each edition.

This is my 32nd monthly edition and together with the three special AGM editions I have produced 35 in total. I therefore feel that it is time that I hand responsibility for the newsletter

over to somebody else and that a new editor has an opportunity to move the newsletter on into its next phase.

Consequently this will be the last newsletter that I edit. I will then concentrate more on improving the magazine and developing the social media side of communications. I know that many of you do not use any of the social media applications, but all of our potential new members use this means of communications all of the time, and we must prove that we are moving with the times if we expect them to join us.

I am delighted to announce that Paul Molley, our new councillor for

Region 11, has agreed to take over responsibilty for the newsletter. He is already planning changes and you may have noticed that the name of this newsletter has changed, as has the name of the club magazine.

The rest of my committee are working to improve all areas of communications whilst at the same time investigating every means possible to keep the costs to a minimum.

Please send future items for inclusion in the newsletter to Paul at [email protected] and for the magazine to me at [email protected].

The members of Reigate 41 Club were surprised and disappointed that the proposal at the National AGM to accept partners/husbands of Tangent (who had not previously been in Round Table) was not carried.

We believe that this is a narrow view of those present and voting, and was influenced by the stupidity of the proxy voting system that again the National AGM failed to rectify. We can elect a UK Government via postal voting, but not signify our views to 41 Club AGM in the same way!

With regards to the issue of partners/husbands of Tangent, we voted on this matter at our own AGM and unanimously agreed that it was the right and proper course for Reigate 41 Club to accept partners/husbands of Tangent as prospective members of our 41 Club; particularly as we have

very strong links with our Tangent and feel it would be putting an unnecessary barrier between us if we rejected such a sensible approach.

At a time when membership is a key issue, and indeed when Round Tables (and particularly ours) appear to make up their own rules on membership to allow members to stay on (e.g. as honorary members) well beyond 45 – we feel it is for the good and well-being of our Club to allow such an approach.

Indeed we noted with interest (and full agreement!) the comments of Ray Hill (National Communications Officer) in the Spring 41 Club magazine that flags the very point that 41 Club “steadfastly refuses to accept any change and actively derides all attempts at improvement....if we want to attract new members then we must adapt and improve...”.

We are thus advising you that we have agreed our own local membership rule that stipulates that partners/husbands of Tangent members (who had not

previously been in Round Table) will be accepted as prospective members of Reigate 41 Club.

nAtIonAL CAPItAtIon

Following a recent meeting of Newton Abbot 41 Club, a motion was passed expressing dismay at the 20% increase in capitation without any apparent substantial reduction in expenditure by the National Council. How can the National Treasurer justify this hike in the fee ?

Whilst £2 in itself may not seem much, our Club considered more information should have been provided to explain why it was necessary. Mike Morrisroe, Chairman, newton Abbot 41 Club

Region 11 (Cheshire And NW Midlands) Golf Day

Ellesmere & District

After three years at Crewe Golf Club the Region 11 Tournament moved to a new home for 2012. The competition took place on July 5th at Runcorn Golf Club. It was a good day and the sun was out all afternoon.

For the fourth consecutive year there was a record entry and the eventual winners were Alsager, who had previously won the competition in 2010

Congratulations to Tony Pickford, Mike Moors, E Campbell and Peter White, who will join with Newport, last year’s National champions, to represent Region 11 at the national finals in September.Roger scowcroft, northwich 41 Club

Members of Ellesmere & District 41 Club along with Tangent enjoyed a most informative talk from their local MP and Cabinet Minister Rt Hon Owen Paterson who with his wife Rose gave a talk on their adventure in the Mongol Derby.

Owen and Rose competed in this event last August which was a 1,000 km race across Mongolia over 10 days replicating the ancient system devised by Genghis Khan’s pony express system of communication. During the event they were only allowed to carry 5 kg of personal possessions and changed ponies every 40 km. The 41 Club heard all about the hardships endured on route both physical and mental.

Following the event almost £80,000 has been raised for three charities The Royal Irish Regiment Benevolent Fund (based at Tern Hill), The Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries based at Gobowen and Mercy Corps Mongolia who organise the event and the Patersons are keen to highlight that donations can still be made via the web site http://www.charitygiving.co.uk/patersonsmongolderby

David Webster, Chairman of 41 Club, thanked the Patersons for their talk and presented them with a cheque from 41 Club and Tangent.

Sutton Coldfield Ex-Tablers’ Club celebrated the 60th anniversary of receiving their Charter on Sunday 10th June at Walmley Gold Club Sutton Coldfield when National President David and his wife Kay joined them, their ladies and the widows of deceased members for a most enjoyable Charter Lunch. There were short reminiscences from some of the members but the star of the afternoon was National President David whose address was enjoyed by everyone being humorous as well as providing some insight into what is happening currently at National level.Gordon Mcnab, sutton Coldfield 41 Club

Teddington To Calais 2012 Is delayed (Unavoidably)Andy Nation of Welwyn 41 Club

has been training for many months and raising support for his 2012 swim from Teddington to Calais, continuing the swim he started a few years ago. Everything was going well for his planned departure on the 30th June, however fate was to take a hand as on the Jubilee weekend he fell in his garden and broke some vertebrae in his neck. Paralysed from the neck down he was transferred to the Addenbrooke Hospital Spinal Injury Unit where an operation was performed on his neck,

inserting some plates to align the broken vertebrae. As to the future here are Andy’s own words:

“I currently have a weak grip in my left hand and the grip in my right hand is very feeble. There is pain in my left hand and my right forearm and hand. The left side of my body cannot register temperature. The staples in my hip and throat have now been removed. However, there are so many positive things to be thankful for. With continued physiotherapy I should make

a near 100% recovery but how long it will take remains to be seen. My sense of humour has remained intact and it is reassuring to have received so many cards, emails, phone calls and visits from so many good friends who care for me

It’s now down to me to get my show back on the road! The Diamond Jubilee Swim from Teddington to Calais will have a new start date that will be announced in the near future.” (11th June 2012)

A Message From The 41 Club Internatonal PresidentDear Fellow 41ers,

Friendship is on one side - perceptions and opinions on the other. Some of the French may think they have done the wrong thing for the right reason. Yet some of the French think they have done the wrong thing.

Honestly, from the time I was President elect, I have spoken strongly in the Board to our French Past President Jean-louis and tried my best to persuade him to stop his country’s impulsive action.

Unfortunately they decided in their National Council and their National Board declared it to the rest of the world at our Chennai International AGM. It was then put up for voting at their National AGM.

As a non French man, I was an observer as the International President at their AGM. But there was a question from their floor as to how a major decision like this can be made before they got the concurrence from the floor. However the vote at the floor was almost like a ratification to the prior act of their Council and their Board.

At this point of time, I humbly request all our fellow 41ers across the world not to repent on milk that has already been spilt. Hopefully this French issue may be temporary, until they sort out the voting issue with their non ex -Tabler friends and also withdraw their erroneous application for registering the name and logo of 41 International in favour of France.

We at the International have to accept this resignation of one country done at their own will and accord against a voted democracy. We have to accept it with grace so that our minds can be clear and we should still treat them as our normal friends and participate with them within the frame work of our rules and objects.

We have all respects and regards to the non-Tabler friends in some

countries. We have accepted some years back that we will not interfere with what countries do in their home grounds. However without effecting the interest of our 41 International Association. In spite of accepting and being well aware of this fact, the French have resigned from our 41 International Association.

At the global level, there are still many more countries who are small and should have the opportunity to be with us and enjoy the fellowship and participation in our activities. We plan to have a workshop at our HYM at Tampere in August, where democratic decisions will be made to accept all small countries in stages.

I strongly feel to succeed in any walk of life we should be able to convert any disadvantage to an advantage.

Let us all join hands surely and firmly and pledge from our hearts to bring one Tabler into our Tabling movement and at the same time reach out to those past Tablers who have for some reason not joined us, explain the need of their support as a past Tabler and be with us for a lifetime as a life Tabler.

My important message to every IRO is to please discuss with their National Boards and to select one or two countries this year for whom they can play the role of Godfather and send the names of countries to me. The International Board can also follow up too.

To sum up once again One World One Club – we should support the growth of our Tablers to support them in their projects with our knowledge and past experience, set an example as seniors by upholding and cultivating the highest ideals in business, professional and civic traditions which we learnt from Round Table and make our future generation of Tablers feel welcome into our fold of 41 clubs.

I want all of you to look at the future

with positive thoughts, come forward with your views for the growth and welfare of this Association.

Let us not forget we are the most privileged and cream of the society and we are being looked upon by the needy and under privileged for us to serve them. We have more to do in this world to eradicate hunger and lack of education.

Our name and logo is still a common property of our Association. In our friendship organization, it was very disheartening to file an objection at the Trademark Registry against the French erroneous application to register the common name and logo of 41 International in favour of France.

For Tablers word is bond and trust is everything. The name and logo was kept in trust as a common property.

At the compromise meeting held at Italy where many countries were present, when I asked Zanoletti the French National President, very clearly as to how they could lay their hands and try to register this common name - he answered it was lying on the table unattended and therefore he took it for the French. Justice will prevail fair.

Dear Friends, kindly do not form an opinion that as your President this year, I am finding fault with the French. I am only expressing views to you for all countries to realize the need to stay together and not allow any thought or influence to create a drift in our excellent movement.

We should remain calm and united. Look at the positive things. We shall stay together, serve together and grow together.

May the hinges of honesty and friendship never rust.
