Because no child should go hungry. Because no child should be left behind. Because we are proud of our forefathers. Tonight, thanks to all of you in this room, we will have raised enough money to feed 1600 children formula for 6 months. Tonight, we will have helped in Dr. Lloyd Axworthy’s dream that every needy child who wants to go to university has the financial ability to do so through the University of Winnipeg Opportunity Fund. Tonight, we will have raised enough money to keep Italian language and culture alive and well in this wonderful community of ours. I have been privileged to be elected president of this wonderful organization that takes its responsibility for those who are less fortunate so seriously. It is an honour to serve a group of men who believes that their mission in this life is to leave this world a better place than they found. Above all, I feel so fortunate to live in a city that has brought the idea of giving to a completely different level. Tonight, I salute you for your generosity and goodwill to all men. We could not have done it without you. Thank you, Justin Bova

In keeping with the Order’s mission statement to help the needy, I commend the Garibaldi Lodge for choosing such a worthwhile cause.

Best wishes on a memorable and successful evening to everyone involved in this celebration. I am certain that with the theme being ”60’s Vegas” guests will have a wonderful and enjoyable evening.

Vince Bova Memorial Award

Vice Consul of Italy in winnipegStanislao Carbone

On behalf of the Government of Italy I take this opportunity to offer congratulations to the Sons of Italy Garibaldi Lodge for the spirit of civic responsibility that defi nes and permeates their activities. Whether it is through its philanthropic objectives, cultural initiatives or sense of camaraderie that is characteristic of its day-to-day modus operandi, the organization demonstrates a creative,

determined and inspired approach toward serving its community. No doubt this is a refl ection of an identity, a collective conscience if you will, steeped in the dynamism that is the Italian Canadian culture, a culture nourished in history and vital and relevant to today’s complex socio-economic reality. All of these elements are embodied in the annual fundraiser. In as much as it is an instrument for procuring funds important as that may be, it is also a time to refl ect on the cause for which the dinner has been organized and to remind ourselves of our common humanity. It serves as a testament to the values of cooperation, fraternity and respect that are essential in fostering greater understanding and establishing broad – based alliances essential for expanding intellectual horizons, strengthening civil rights and effecting social change.

In 1997, one of our beloved brothers, Vince Bova, passed away after a long battle with cancer. To know Vince was to know a man who exemplified the spirit of The Sons of Italy. He was committed to the club in a manner that was beyond compare.

He could always be found at social functions, volunteering his time and energy. He was a man who never asked for any credit, but was always willing to lend a hand and share a smile.

In Vince's memory, we now present this annual award to a member who works diligently behind the scenes as a dedicated participant in The Sons of Italy.

The past recipients have selected a deserving recipient and the award will be announced this evening.

This evening Sons of Italy, Garibaldi Lodge is proud to support Winnipeg Harvest and their Hunger for Hope program. The program, which was originally founded by the management team at Corus Entertainment, raises monies to purchase and provide infant formula to those most needy in Winnipeg. This ambitious program is administered and distributed directly by Winnipeg Harvest ensuring that those in need receive.

This evening we have the world renowned Frank Sinatra entertainer, Steve Lippia, who has contributed his special talents for this worthy cause.Thank you, Steve!

This year we also have the pleasure of supporting two Helping Hands Charities. The first is from our own Italian community: the Dante Alighieri School, which is the backbone of Italian language in Manitoba with students ranging from just four years of age to adults. The Sons of Italy recognizes the importance of the Dante because where there is language there is culture. Our second charity is the University of Winnipeg’s Opportunity Fund, which provides inner city youth the opportunity to attend University.

It is also with a sense of both admiration and pride that we celebrate and recognize the outstanding accomplishment of one of our community members. Mr. Joe Aiello is this year’s recipient of the Canadian Italian Business Professional Association (CIBPA) award for his outstanding accomplishments in broadcasting and his dedication to helping Winnipeg charities. Well done, Joe, and thank you. A dinner is as only as successful as the individuals who organize it. So with that in mind, we would like to acknowledge the tireless work by all of our members to ensure the success of this dinner. Each person on the dinner committee brings their unique talents to the table and helps facilitate an event that exceeds expectations each year!

A heartfelt and special thank you goes out to RBC, our title sponsor. RBC has shown itself to be a real community leader and Manitoba is fortunate to have a financial institution that has the fortitude to support local community events, including our Hunger for Hope charity of choice.

In closing, we would also like to recognise the tremendous financial support of all of tonight’s sponsors. It is due to your efforts that we continue to be in a position to help Manitoba organizations grow and meet the demands that face them. We understand the demands for community support are often overwhelming and we are humbled that on a consistent basis you choose to partner with the Sons of Italy. Last but certainly not least, thanks must go to all of you for continuing to not only purchase tickets, but to attend our event as part of our extended Italian family.

Tonight we invite you to be an honourary Italian, which always ensures great food, friends and a love for life.

Welcome to the Sons of Italy Garibaldi Lodge 26th Annual Gala Fundraising Dinner. I am extremely honoured to have been asked to serve as one of the Honourary Co-Chairs along side Garth Buchko.

As a proud member of the Sons of Italy, I am thrilled that we have chosen to partner with Winnipeg Harvest for a charity close to my heart, both professionally and personally. This year’s Charity of Choice, Hunger for Hope, was an initiative started by Corus Radio and Winnipeg Harvest.

As a father of two young girls, I’m also motivated on a personal level to help bring awareness to Winnipeg’s alarming child poverty rate and the increasing need for proper child nourishment including infant food and formula. Hunger for Hope focuses on our community’s children. I commend both the executive of the Sons of Italy and the efforts of those of Hunger for Hope and Winnipeg Harvest for the exceptional work they do in our community.

I would like to thank my friend Steve Lippia for making tonight what I can only imagine will be nothing less than spectacular. I would also like to thank all of you for attending. Your presence tonight supports not only the Garibaldi Lodge but also a fantastic charity, Hunger for Hope.

Sincerely,

Mario Posillipo

www.sonsofi taly.ca 2012 Sons of Italy/CIBPA Gala Dinner 19

As the Chair and founding member of Hunger for Hope, I am very proud to serve as a Honorary Co-Chair for the 26th Annual Sons of Italy Gala Dinner. Hunger for Hope is thrilled to be chosen as this year’s charity of

choice and delighted to partner with the Sons of Italy Garibaldi Lodge. Five years ago the strategy and dream to end child hunger in our city and province was built over a lunch hour. I have been always horrified at the thought of young babies and infants in our community going hungry. Most of us are truly blessed with what we have... but the reality is there are over 1600 babies that have to use Winnipeg Harvest for emergency baby food and formula each and every month. This number is the highest in all of Canada. We must as citizens of this great province, stand up and say “In our community... NO CHILD WILL GO TO BED HUNGRY”. In the five years since Hunger for Hope began, we have raised over $700,000. Last year alone, we raised $277,000. Our success is because of wonderful partnerships with groups and businesses, like the Sons of Italy. In closing, I would like to emphasize how important the staff at Corus Radio Winnipeg and the staff at Winnipeg Harvest is to this program. They are the true champions for the success of Hunger for Hope. Thank you for your generous support. Enjoy the evening... I am sure we will all agree, this night will be the new standard by which all fundraising dinners will be judged. Most graciously, Garth Buchko

MARSH CANADA CONGRATULATES THE SONS OF ITALY ON THEIR 26TH ANNUAL GALA DINNER

Steve Lippia didn’t grow up in New Jersey like Frank Sinatra, whom he honours in his show but the two men do have a lot in common. They’re both of Italian descent, they both sang in variety shows as young men and both fronted big bands, performing standards written by some of America’s best composers and lyricists. Most importantly, they both love to tell stories with words and music.

Steve’s mother was a professional singer in the Baltimore area. Although he had four siblings, he was the only one who had an interest in music. Growing up, Steve sang in his church choir and was in the chorus in high school. His vocal chords were good enough to get him into the all-state chorus and the all-national Catholic chorus. He also performed in variety shows.

After high school, Steve took a break from the world of music. He graduated from Central Connecticut College, attended Western New England College School of Law, worked as a stockbroker and owned a small paving business in Florida. He sang occasionally but didn’t have a band. Although people began to compare him to the singers of his parents’ era, especially Sinatra, the similarity is only by chance. He honours the music of Frank Sinatra not by copying him directly but by paying tribute to him.

When he made the decision to go full-time with his music career, he had no idea what would happen. Since moving to Vegas, Steve normally plays over 100 dates a year, performing with his band and in front of some of the best orchestras. Steve had extended engagements in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, has performed with hundreds of symphonies including the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed at venues include the legendary “Birdland Jazz Club” in New York City and a highly successful European Jazz Festival Tour. He has also performed at the world renowned Jazz Aspen Festival, Mrs. Betty Ford Gala and for Aaron Spelling and Donald Trump.

In testimonials, directors write:

“…the best POPS concert they had ever seen anywhere in the country.”

“We are still receiving calls from our POPS subscribers…”

“Almost a year before the date, a fan called to purchase tickets.”

“…we were able to cut marketing and advertising during the last two weeks because we

had already sold out!”

“…extremely well run show that brought the audience to its feet for two sold-out

performances.”

“Steve is an excellent singer and entertainer and the quality of his performance was

fi rst-rate. The crowd loved him…”

Charity of Choice

Winnipeg Harvest and the Hunger for Hope program In 1985 Winnipeg Harvest opened its doors to address what was thought to be a short-term need to provide food to hungry people within our community. Almost 27 years later, the number of Manitobans struggling with hunger and poverty has drastically increased. Winnipeg Harvest feeds approximately 55,000 individuals each month – over half of these people are children. Manitoba has the highest percentage of children using food banks in Canada! Despite generous food donations from individuals and businesses in Manitoba, there is never enough infant formula and baby food to meet demand. As a result, Winnipeg Harvest has an annual cash operating cost of $200,000 designated strictly for the purchase of formula and nutritious food to feed babies and pre-school aged children. In 2008, Corus Radio Winnipeg made a commitment to partner with Winnipeg Harvest to help eradicate child hunger in Manitoba - and the Hunger for Hope program was conceived and launched.

The goal of the Hunger for Hope program is to cover the annual cost of purchasing needed food for infants and children, and to establish an endowment fund to cover this cost for years to come, so that No Child Goes to Bed Hungry. Over the last three years Hunger for Hope has raised close to $700,000 to address this issue. Winnipeg Harvest’s goal is to reduce hunger in Manitoba by half by the end of this decade. Our friends at Corus Radio Winnipeg are there with us every step of the way in our efforts to achieve this goal. Our thanks and gratitude to the Sons of Italy Garibaldi Lodge and all the supporters of this great event for helping Winnipeg Harvest and the Hunger for Hope program meet the needs of hungry children in Winnipeg and Manitoba. For Joe Aiello, a person’s life is often measured in the memories of strangers. A celebrated media personality, Joe’s face and name are known to generations of Winnipeggers, most of whom he has never met. Joe understands that with celebrity comes responsibility because he

knows that when his days are up, people will remember more than just his voice.

“I’ve always believed that this job gives people like me a voice to speak out,” explains Joe. “When someone needs help, it’s important that we do what we can. I hope that when my time is up, people remember that I did what I could.”

Joe’s heart of gold comes naturally, he says. Born into a typical Italian family, he learned early on that familial ties and friendship are keys to a loving life and that giving back is something expected of everyone. As for his gilded tongue, well, that’s another story.

“Since I was a kid, I wanted to be in broadcasting,” he recalls. “I think my parents thought I was crazy because I’d walk around with my Mom’s spoons, pretending I was talking into a microphone. I was always fascinated with radio and I’ve been blessed with a long professional career in my hometown.”

Since 1986, Joe has been a fixture on local radio, working behind the scenes as a producer and on-air as a broadcaster. For the past 18 years, he’s been “Joe” in the Tom and Joe morning show on 92 CITI FM. It’s a gig he’s proud of because it lets him be himself; something that he doesn’t take for granted.

“When I got into the radio biz 26 years ago, having an ethnic-sounding name was often frowned upon,” Joe notes. “I remembered my grandfather telling me stories about the value of self-respect and I never stopped using “Aiello.” My Canadian-Italian identity is a source of pride and I have lots of fun with it on the show, telling stories about my family and explaining to folks what it’s like to grow up Italian.”

Personally and professionally, Joe attends up to 250 community activities and charitable events a year. It’s a busy schedule but one he’s only too happy to keep. After all, it’s in his nature to give back to causes he feels are worthy, and especially to those he has a personal connection with.

“Like others who might have had a personal crisis, you jump on board for a certain cause,” Joe remarks. “I have a list of professional causes and a list of personal causes I work hard for, including breast cancer awareness. I lost my mom and most recently my wife, Alanna, to cancer so the cause is close to my heart.”

There is humility in someone who understands the value of his work. For Joe, making a living having fun and entertaining people is something he’s always wanted to do. The real worth, he says, is being able to help out when he’s called upon. After all, he says, his celebrity is really an opportunity.

“I have a voice that entertains but I realized a long time ago that I could also use it to make a difference. Off-air, if I can make a charitable event that much better, that much more successful, then I’ve achieved my goal.”

Order Sons of Italy of Canada

The Order Sons of Italy of Canada is an organization of men and women who are devoted to the

celebration of Italian heritage, community service and charitable good works. The first lodge in Canada

was established in Ontario in 1915. Currently, there are fifteen Lodges in Canada and over 650 Lodges

in the U.S.A. It is the largest Fraternal Order of Canadians and Americans of Italian origin.

In Manitoba, there are three Lodges: the Garibaldi men’s lodge, the Lupa Di Roma women’s lodge, and

the Leonardo Da Vinci Youth Lodge. Together, these lodges under the Order Sons of Italy are making a

difference in Manitoba.

Garibaldi Lodge

The Garibaldi Lodge was the first lodge of the Order Sons of Italy of Canada to be

founded in Manitoba. This year witnessed their twenty-sixth annual gala fundraising

dinner. Each year members celebrate giving back to the community in conjunction

with the Canadian Italian Business Professional Association by donating significant

funds to a charity of choice.

Along with advancing the general community, Garibaldi Lodge promotes cultural endeavours by

supporting local groups in Winnipeg like the Premier League “Sons of Italy Lions” soccer team, the “Sons

of Italy Splendore D’Italia Dance Group” and the Dante Alighieri Cultural Society. The Lodge also finances

higher education by supporting a scholarship program involving all Manitoba universities.

La Lupa Di Roma Lodge

The La Lupa Di Roma Lodge was formed in 1989. Each year the Lodge hosts special fundraising events

for families including their major Halloween Party. The La Lupa Di Roma Lodge also holds a brunch

in March of each year in recognition of International Women’s Day. At this annual event a Manitoba

woman of Italian heritage is honoured for her accomplishments and involvement in the community and

is presented with the “La Donna Dell’Anno” award. Like the Garibaldi Lodge, La Lupa Di Roma Lodge

also offers a scholarship program for qualifying individuals who are pursuing post-secondary education.

Through the years the Lodge has supported charities, seniors groups, children’s activities and individuals

in need. It strives to aid the community at large in all possible ways.
