The ambition of the Bauhaus members to reform art as well as the living en viron ment has lastingly changed not only architec ture and living space, but also people’s thoughts and actions. The idea of an interdisciplinary collaboration between all fields of art extends far beyond the historical ex istence of the Bauhaus from 1919 to 1933 and still provides important impulses today.

Under the slogan “Thinking the World Anew” the Bauhaus Association 2019 will be inviting you to rediscover the Bauhaus and Modernism. From new museums at the historical Bauhaus locations of Berlin, Dessau and Weimar through exhibitions in all of Germany to dance and performance: Let’s all celebrate together!

one spot and all useful

people.”Oskar Schlemmer

Centenary Short Questions—Quick Answers

White flatroof buildings and tubular steel furniture still represent the epitome of all that we associate with the “Bauhaus”. Yet, the Hochschule für Gestaltung (School of Design), founded in 1919, was about much more than puristic architecture and minimal design— it was also a school of ideas and a field for experiments. Members of the Bauhaus School such as Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten, Oskar Schlemmer or László MoholyNagy broke new ground in art, architecture and design. Nothing less was at stake than reshaping everyday life and coexistence in society: How do we want to live? What do we want our homes to look like? Pressing questions that remain as timely and relevant today as they were 100 years ago.

Where is the Festival of Modernism Taking Place? The Bauhaus Centenary

Three new museums in Weimar, Dessau and Berlin. 100 outstanding locations of Bauhaus and Modernism that you can travel to while taking the Grand Tour of Modernism. Countless exhibitions and events—the Festival of Modernism will take place throughout Germany and in many other locations all over the world—from Hamburg to Stuttgart, from Tel Aviv to Copenhagen.

How Do We Want to Celebrate? Bauhaus as a Synthesis of the Art

Beyond the borders between dance and theatre, art and architecture: Bauhaus has always sought an exchange between different disciplines in the pursuit of the synthesis of the art. The approach allied artistic and creative activity with the shared experience of the mutual inspiration of dancers and musicians, artists and thinkers. The same goes for the Bauhaus year, which will feature va rious activities in five topic areas.

A perfect start—The Opening Festival 100 years of bauhaus at the Berlin Academy of Arts ushers in the nationwide festivities. The outstanding historical achievements of the Bauhaus looked at anew and presented in a new light. The opening festival features a variety of formats—from concerts to exhibitions, performances to discussions up to the party itself. For Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky, László Moholy-Nagy and Paul Klee not only loved art, they also liked to party. The result is a creative experimental jour-ney around the legendary Bauhaus stage under the artistic direc-tion of Bettina Wagner-Bergelt. The opening festival is under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

From north to south and east to west: the Grand Tour of Moder-nism links together important Bauhaus and Modernist buildings to form a journey through 100 years of architectural history. It takes in places that have influenced our understanding of life, work and home between 1900 and 2000—individual buildings and housing estates, icons and controversies, famous buildings and unknown gems. The Grand Tour of Modernism is under the patronage of Minister of State Monika Grütters, the Federal Government Com-missioner for Culture and the Media.

How can we make Bauhaus exciting and fascinating for children and young people? Since the academic year of 2016/17, nine Bauhaus Agents have been exploring new horizons of communi-cation with more than 30 partner schools and the three Bauhaus Institutions in Berlin, Dessau and Weimar. Together with students, teachers, museum educators, curators, artists, architects and ur-ban researchers, they are working out new and innovative ways to design museums and exhibitions. They are also trying out new formats—analogue and digital discovery tours, workshops, places of communication—for students, for all museum visitors and for urban society in general. Frankfurt on the way to a new kind of urban cul-ture—Das Neue Frankfurt was not limited to the well-known housing development programme started by Ernst May. From the mid-1920s, the urban utopia required a universal claim on fash-ion, interior, industrial, product and communi-cation design. In conjunction with growing in-dus trialisation and the expansion of communal areas, the New Frankfurt was intended to create a modern urban society. The exhibition paints a picture of a city at the dawn of a new future and of the movement’s function as role model.

Grow Houses! is a temporary laboratory focussed on building and nature. It looks at how humanity first interfered with nature when we started building houses and then, later, entire cities. The Center for Literature (CfL) at Burg Hülshoff Castle brings together artists and experts from the fields of architecture, climate research, landscape ecology with students and other citi-zens. And they have a big question for the big centenary: is it not time to go take a hard look at modern building habits and re-invent them if we are to survive?

Heimo Zobernig. Piet Mondrian Demonstration Rooms: Céline Condorelli, Kapwani Kiwanga, Judy Radul

How do we think about spaces and the display of art today? Con-temporary artists address current ideas about space as well as concepts of the 1920s, when artists designed exhibition rooms and private rooms for Dresden in the international context of the Bauhaus. Heimo Zobernig presents a new installation based on a design by Piet Mondrian (1926) for a room in the villa of the Dres-den art collector Ida Bienert which was never realised. Parallel to his exhibition, three artists explore the current display of the col-lection in the Albertinum.

Umbo. Photographer.

Umbo (1902 – 1980) was a student of Itten, Kandinsky, Klee and Schlemmer at Bauhaus. In 1926, he almost accidently stumbled into photography but within a few months, he became one of the most celebrated photographers in Germany. In film, circus, vaude-ville, on stage, in the dark room as well as in experiments with the camera, this bohemian and freethinker found pictures of different realities that seemed to transcend bleak everyday life. His im-portant contribution to the history of photography was redisco-vered in the middle of the 1970s and continues to this day through the acquisition of his estate by the Sprengel Museum Hannover, the Berlinische Galerie and the Bauhaus Dessau in 2016.

Making Futures Bauhaus+ is an action research project that ad-dresses questions of architecture as a collective form and archi-tecture as a resource. It invites us to reflect on our environment beyond obsolete dichotomies such as public and private, living and working, urban and rural. In preparation for a summer aca-demy to be held in September 2019, Making Futures Bauhaus+ is developing a public learning programme that continuously ex-plores future modes of architectural and urban practice. A plug-in at Floating University Berlin (April – September 2018) and three mobile workshops in Istanbul (September 2018), Palermo (Octo-ber 2018) and Thuringia (March 2019) constitute the project as an open, reflexive and practice-driven format.

GRASSI Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Leipzig

There could really have been a “Bauhaus Leipzig”. Before the avant-garde had to leave Dessau, a move to the trade fair city was considered—ultimately to no avail. Yet, Leipzig Trade Fair had been enormously important for Bauhaus since 1923. Mem-bers of the Bauhaus found their platform for new ideas in design at Grassimesse exhibitions as well as in the halls of the Muster-messe (sample fair). Bauhaus typography and image aesthetics found their way into publishing products in Saxony. Bauhaus also left clear traces in the modern architecture of Saxony. The GRAS-SI Museum für Angewandte Kunst reflects how Bauhaus is seen in Saxony.

In the 1920s, the settlements of New Frankfurt became world-renowned building projects. Their goal was to reduce housing shortages and to pro-vide affordable housing for people living on the poverty line. These settlements were built by the architect Ernst May in a time of acute housing shortages. The Historical Museum of Frankfurt addresses the question of what has remained of the reform movement—and what is it like to live in the Ernst-May-Viertel today.

Bauhaus ceramics from the perspective of those who followed. Maria Laach Abbey, Glees

Tradition is about passing on the flame and not idolising of the ash: that is the motto of the exhibition at the Maria Laach Abbey, showcasing the ceramics of successors to Otto Lindig and the Keramikmanufaktur Maria Laach. Works and objects created—with the aid of a look back at the past—in the spirit and for-ward-looking approach of the Bauhaus. The axes of vision be-tween the individual partitions and cabinets offer additional perspectives and raise further questions: what shape is destined to survive, and which is destined for the scrap-heap? The result is a visible expression by the artists of their spiritual and practical connection to Otto Lindig, the most important Bauhaus potter—looking back but with clearly defined opposite poles.

At the same time, the mu seum as a distinct contemporary building connects the Bauhaus buildings in Dessau. What is typically Bauhaus? Wagenfeld lamps, Breuer chairs or Marianne Brandt’s tea service are the trademarks of the famous school today. Yet many objects which are now considered as “Bauhaus originals” did not reach iconic sta-tus until after the Bauhaus was closed down. For 100 years, its ideas have been passed on, its products reissued, imitated or refined. On the basis of 14 case examples, the exhibition highlights how unique pieces and series and re-makes and originals are inseparably connected with the history of the Bauhaus. On display are famous, familiar and forgotten Bauhaus objects, along with artistic positions which take a fresh look at the Bauhaus legacy.

Amateur photography as an aesthetic offence—the stylistic ele-ments which still go by the name “Bauhaus photography”, have their origins in the figure of the snapshooter. In the eyes of the Bauhausler, the snapshooter, whose history goes back to the turn of the century, was the ideal embodiment of the unspoiled ama-teur. They consequently propagated trying out new photographic possibilities to encourage the amateur to be more creatively ac-tive. By focusing on the amateur, the exhibition highlights another aspect of photography at the Bauhaus—the removal of the dis-tinction between art and applied craft.

“Picture of the city—the city in pictures.”, “Neue Sachlichkeit Painting and Photography”, “Bauhaus in Brandenburg. Tracing the history of Architecture, Design and Handcraft”—the Bran-denburgisches Landesmuseum für moderne Kunst presents three simultaneous exhibitions, all of which are part of the project “Unknown Modernism”. At the heart of the shows are questions regarding the connection between socially critical observations and social reform ideas, along with aesthetic Utopias.

Unknown Modernism 2019

Every three years, architecture becomes the fo-cus of public attention with the Triennale of Mo-dernism. The starting points are the UNESCO world heritage sites in Berlin, Dessau and Wei-mar. The third Triennale of Modernism takes place in October 2019 under the patronage of the Israeli ambassador. This jubilee year makes the event a special one. While Berlin and Wei-mar have a clear focus on the vision and world heritage of the school, Dessau is examining ar-chitecture and materials. All these themes are especially interesting with regard to the White City in Tel Aviv.

Worn innovation—good fashion follows social developments and offers new impulses. At the same time, the aesthetic and sensual moments of a garment deserve special attention. When handling fashion, clothing and textiles, they were aware of this at Bauhaus. Young fashion designers from colleges in Berlin-Weissensee, Trier, Helsinki and Paris present their designs for clothing, are created over a six-month work process in co-operation with tra-ditional textile manufacturers from Apolda in Thuringia. A colla-boration with digital and traditional craftsmen from the Weimarer Land, where the Bauhaus was founded.
