retain 6 months
gold lifecycle policy:
backup to disk, retain 3 weeks
write tape, keep onsite 2 months
write second tape, vault offsite, retain

Key Values: Works With:
• Meet SLA commitments: ensure data is stored in the right place, for the right time
• Reduce storage costs: store important data on disk, less important data on tape
• Reduce risk: ensures data is migrated to tape before deleting from disk
• Reduce administrative cost: automate data management with lifecycle policies
• Tape

• Virtual Tape Option
• OpenStorage Disk Option
15
Enterprise Disk Foundation: Media Server Load Balancing
15
Media Server Load Balancing: delivering high availability and dynamic capacity optimization
Key Values: Works With:
• Reduced server count & cost: better utilization allows for reducing media servers
• Greater performance: large jobs can be aggregated across media servers
• High availability: jobs are automatically allocated to available media servers
• Reduce administrative cost: simply add new media servers to the pool and jobs are automatically assigned

In 6.5:
media server load balancing
• Automatic HA / failover
• If jobs fail they are re-started on a new server
• Clients backup to least busy media server
• No fixed links between media servers & clients
16
Enterprise Disk Foundation: Intelligent Disk Capacity Management
16
Intelligent Disk Capacity Management: intelligently managing the shared disk pool
Key Values: Works With:
• Reduced disk cost: better utilization through intelligent allocation
• Faster backup / restore: backups are kept on a single volume when possible
• Higher reliability: avoids “disk full” conditions by better managing disk pool
• Tiered storage: ensures that most important backups remain on disk longer
• Flexible Disk Option
• PureDisk Deduplication
Option
• OpenStorage Disk Option
Before: In 6.5:Capacity Optimization:
• Automatic selection of disk target of the right size
• Spans volumes if backup is bigger then largest volume
Intelligent Expiration:
• Disk capacity is managed by value of the data
• Least important data deleted first, but only after moved to tape

Client-based backup with normal backup
clients is just too much overhead!
Direct Backup of VMDK Files
• Shut down VMs & backup• Shut down VMs, snapshot, backup the snapshot• Hot snapshot & backup the crash-consistent snapshot

VMDK-based backups are ideal, but require better
coordination between VMware, NetBackup, and
applications!

How Capacity is Measured
• Capacity is measured in Front End Terabytes defined as:
– The aggregate amount of data on the client machines measured as the largest aggregate full. Note that we are measuring the actual data backed up, not the capacity of storage.
• Example
– In the environment below there are clients with 300GB, 400GB and 500GB of data that are backed up. The total front end data in this environment in 1.2TB
400GB
300GB + 400GB + 500GB = 1.2TB500GB
300GB
Symantec CONFIDENTIAL 41
NetBackup Capacity Tiers
• There are three tiers of infrastructure capacity
• A customer that purchases a TB in any tier has the right to deploy as much of any product in that tier to protect up to the number of TBs licensed.
• Customers can purchase each tier individually.
– For example a customer could purchase: 5TB Standard, 3TB Enterprise, 4TB Premium
