  • WATER AND WASTE SYSTEM PRESENTATION

    The water and waste system consists of a pneumaticallypressurized potable water system, a waste disposalsystem and a vacuum toilet system.

    POTABLE WATER SYSTEM

    The potable water system supplies the galleys andlavatories with water from a tank via a distributionsystem.It is pressurized by bleed air system. A groundconnector for external supply is also available.

    WASTE WATER SYSTEM

    The waste water system includes drainage of waste waterfrom lavatory wash basins and galley sinks, to bedischarged overboard via heated drain masts.

    TOILET SYSTEM

    The toilet system collects waste in an underfloor wasteholding tank. The tank is emptied and cleaned duringaircraft ground service.The toilet system uses water from the potable watersystem for the toilet flush. Waste is removed from thetoilet bowl due to differential pressure between thewaste tank and cabin.An electronic Vacuum System Controller (VSC) controlsand monitors the vacuum system.

  • POTABLE WATER SYSTEM DESCRITION

    STORAGE

    The potable water is stored in one tank installed inthe pressurized underfloor area of the right handfuselage, aft of the forward cargo compartment.Potable water tank capacity : 200 l (53 US gal).

    PRESSURIZATION

    Pressurization of the system enables water supply fromthe tank to the necessary service location.Compressed air is tapped from the cross feed line ofthe engine bleed air.On ground, when the bleed air system is not available,the ground air pressure supply system is used.If installed, an optional compressor ensurespressurization in case of bleed air decrease.

    DISTRIBUTION

    Potable water from the water tank is supplied througha system of distribution lines.The lavatory and galley distribution lines run belowthe passenger compartment floor.They are shrouded and insulated, and some of them areheated.

    USER SUPPLY

    Each lavatory can be isolated from the potable waterdistribution system through a manual shut-off valve.

    HEATING

    A water heater is installed under the wash basin insidethe sanitary unit cabinet.A thermostat allows the water temperature to bemaintained between 45 C (113 F) and 48 C (118,4 F).An over temperature safety device protects the heatingelement.

    FILLING

    Filling is achieved through a fill/drain valve operatedby the fill/drain control handle on the potable waterservice panel.The fill/drain control handle simultaneously opens theelectrically motorized overflow valve for venting.The quantity tramsmitter sends a tank-full signal toclose the fill/drain valve automatically.Manual operation is possible via control handlesdedicated to each valve.Maximum permissible pressure to fill the potable watertank is 50 psi (3.4 bars).

    DRAINING

    The draining operation is achieved through thefill/drain valve and two motorized drain valves usingthe same control handle as the filling operation.In this case, the overflow valve is also controlledto open.Manual operation is possible via control handlesdedicated to each valve.

  • POTABLE WATER SYSTEM CONTROLS AND INDICATING

    GENERAL

    The potable water controls and indicating includes thedisplay on the Forward Attendant Panel (FAP) and threepanels located at the bottom of the aircraft fuselage.

    POTABLE WATER SERVICE PANEL

    The potable water service panel is installed in therear left side of the fuselage.

    DOOR MICROSWITCHThe door microswitch isolates the indicating systemwhen the potable water service panel is closed.When the door is open, the electric motor of thecompressor is stopped.

    QUANTITY INDICATORThe quantity indicator gives the level of the waterin the potable water tank.

    FILL/DRAIN CONTROL HANDLEThe fill/drain control handle is used to select afilling or draining operation.

    FORWARD DRAIN VALVE OPEN LIGHTThe forward drain valve open light comes on when theforward drain valve is open.The light has a filament press to test facility.

    TANK FULL LIGHTThe tank full light comes on when the water tank isfull.The light has a filament press to test facility.

    TANK DRAIN VALVE LIGHTThe tank drain valve light comes on when the tank drainvalve is open.The light has a filament press to test facility.

    OVERFLOW VALVE LIGHTThe overflow valve light comes on when the overflowvalve is open.The light has a filament press to test facility.

    The Forward Attendant Panel (FAP) is located in theforward section of the cabin.

    WATER QUANTITYThe Forward Attendant Panel displays the potable "WATerQuantiTY" stored in the potable water tank when the"IND ON" pushbutton is pressed in.The water quantity is also displayed when the potablewater service door is open.

    WATER TANK

    IDENTIFICATIONFIN: 3000MM

    LOCATIONZONE: 138

    DESCRIPTIONIt is made of Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP).It is strengthened to accept the rated pressure forthe potable water system (between 25 psi and 28 psi).The tank is attached to the aircraft structure withclamps and has a capacity: 200 l (53 US gal).The tank has:

    - an overflow port,- an installation port for the quantitytransmitter,

    - a connection for distribution,- a connection for air pressurization.

    QUANTITY TRANSMITTER

    IDENTIFICATIONFIN: 3MA

    LOCATIONZONE: 138

    DESCRIPTIONThe Quantity transmitter is installed in the watertank and monitors the volume of water remaining in thetank. It operates as a variable capacitor.The transmitter also has a low-level switch and high-level switch.The low-level switch opens when the water level dropsto a set level to disconnect electrical supply to thewater heaters in the lavatories.The high-level switch de-energizes a relay which closesthe fill/drain valve when the tank is full.

    DESCRIPTIONThe microswitch closes to energize the indicatingsystem when the potable water service panel is openedfor ground servicing.The microswitch isolates the indicating system whenthe service door is closed again. The "IND ON"pushbutton, on the Forward Attendant Panel, overridesthe microswitch when pushed in.

    DESCRIPTIONThe fill/drain valve is installed between the waterservice panel and the potable water tank. Tubeassemblies connect the valve to the tank and to theports on the potable water service panel. The "FILL"function of the valve also operates as a "DRAIN"facility. Fill and drain facilities are manuallyselected on the service panel. The fill/drain valvedrains the rear section of the potable waterdistribution system (tank included).

    FORWARD DRAIN VALVE

    IDENTIFICATIONFIN: 4MP

    DESCRIPTIONThe forward drain valve drains the forward section ofthe potable water distribution system.When electrical power is available, the forward drainvalve is electrically controlled by operating thefill/drain valve handle.Without electrical power, the forward drain valve ismechanically controlled by operating the forward drainvalve handle.

    WATER HEATER

    LOCATIONZONE: Typical lavatory

    DESCRIPTIONA water heater is installed under the wash basin insidethe sanitary unit cabinet. The potable water supplyline is connected to the heater inlet and the heateroutlet is connected to the water faucet.Capacity: 1.5 l (0.4 US gal).Temperature range: 45C to 48C (113F to 118F).Working pressure: 22 to 25 psi.An overtemperature safety device cuts off theelectrical power to the heating element when the watertemperature is above 60 5C (140 9F).This safety device can be reset with the resetpushbutton (under the cover).

  • POTABLE WATER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

    STORAGE

    The potable water tank with a capacity of 200 l. (53US gallons) is installed in the pressurized underfloorarea LH behind the rear cargo compartment.

    PRESSURIZATION

    Compressed air is used to pressurize the system inorder to supply water from the tank to the necessaryservice locations. The compressed air is tapped fromthe cross feed-line of the engine bleed air and isconnected to the water tank air inlet.

    DISTRIBUTION

    Potable water from the water tank is supplied througha system of distribution lines which are routed belowthe passenger compartment floor. A part of the forwarddistribution line goes through a hose for addedprotection. The potable water distribution lines areinsulated and electrically heated to prevent iceformation in and around the lines.

    HEATING

    In each lavatory, a water heater is installed underthe wash basin. If the quantity transmitter detects alow level into the water tank, it cuts the electricalsupply of the water heater.A thermostat maintains the water temperature between45C (113F) and 48C (149F). An over temperaturesafety device protects the heating element.

    INDICATION

    The quantity indication system indicates how much wateris available in the potable water tank. The quantitytransmitter transmits the signal to the indicator onthe water service panel and to the Forward AttendantPanel. The TANK FULL light on the service panel comeson when the tank is full.

    SERVICING

    Servicing of the potable water system can be done withor without electrical power. With electrical power, the single FILL/DRAIN handlemechanically operates the fill/overflow drain valveand electrically controls the forward drain valve. Without electrical power, the valves are individuallyoperated by cables.The draining operation is accomplished by opening thefill/overflow drain valve and the forward drain valve.The filling operation is accomplished by opening thefill/overflow drain valve and closing the forward drainvalve.When the tank is full, the quantity transmitter sendsa signal to close the fill/overflow drain valveautomatically.

    GENERAL

    The potable water controls and indicating includes thedisplay on the Forward Attendant Panel (FAP) and twopanels located at the bottom of the aircraft fuselage.

    POTABLE WATER SERVICE PANEL

    The potable water service panel is installed in therear left side of the fuselage.

    DOOR MICROSWITCHThe door microswitch isolates the indicating systemwhen the potable water service panel is closed.

    QUANTITY INDICATORThe quantity indicator gives the level of the waterin the potable water tank.

    FILL/DRAIN CONTROL HANDLEThe fill/drain control handle is used to control theopening or closure of the fill/overflow drain valveand the forward drain valve for filling/drainingoperations.

    FORWARD DRAIN VALVE OPEN LIGHTThe forward drain valve open light comes on when theforward drain valve is open.The light has a filament press to test facility.

  • POTABLE WATER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

    STORAGE

    The potable water tank with a capacity of 200 l. (53US gallons) is installed in the pressurized underfloorarea LH behind the rear cargo compartment.

    PRESSURIZATION

    Compressed air is used to pressurize the system inorder to supply water from the tank to the necessaryservice locations. The compressed air is tapped fromthe cross feed-line of the engine bleed air and isconnected to the water tank air inlet. On ground, when the bleed air system is not available,the ground air pressure supply system is used.If installed, an optional compressor ensurespressurization in case of bleed air decrease.

    DISTRIBUTION

    Potable water from the water tank is supplied througha system of distribution lines which are routed belowthe passenger compartment floor. A part of the forwarddistribution line goes through a hose for addedprotection. The potable water distribution lines areinsulated and electrically heated to prevent iceformation in and around the lines.

    HEATING

    In each lavatory, a water heater is installed underthe wash basin. If the quantity transmitter detects alow level into the water tank, it cuts the electricalsupply of the water heater.A thermostat maintains the water temperature between45C (113F) and 48C (149F). An over temperaturesafety device protects the heating element.

    INDICATION

    The quantity indication system indicates how much wateris available in the potable water tank. The quantitytransmitter transmits the signal to the indicator onthe water service panel and to the Forward AttendantPanel. The TANK FULL light on the service panel comeson when the tank is full.

    SERVICING

    Servicing of the potable water system can be done withor without electrical power. With electrical power, the single FILL/DRAIN handlemechanically operates the fill/overflow drain valveand electrically controls the forward drain valve. Without electrical power, the valves are individuallyoperated by cables.The draining operation is accomplished by opening thefill/overflow drain valve and the forward drain valve.The filling operation is accomplished by opening thefill/overflow drain valve and closing the forward drainvalve.When the tank is full, the quantity transmitter sendsa signal to close the fill/overflow drain valveautomatically.

    GENERAL

    The potable water controls and indicating includes thedisplay on the Forward Attendant Panel (FAP) and twopanels located at the bottom of the aircraft fuselage.

    POTABLE WATER SERVICE PANEL

    The potable water service panel is installed in therear left side of the fuselage.

    DOOR MICROSWITCHThe door microswitch isolates the indicating systemwhen the potable water service panel is closed.When the door is open, the electric motor of thecompressor is stopped.

    QUANTITY INDICATORThe quantity indicator gives the level of the waterin the potable water tank.

    FILL/DRAIN CONTROL HANDLEThe fill/drain control handle is used to fill or drainwater tank during filling or draining operations.

    FORWARD DRAIN VALVE OPEN LIGHTThe forward drain valve open light comes on when theforward drain valve is open.The light has a filament press to test facility.

    COMPONENT DESCRIPTIONThe compressor is a double-bellows reciprocating pumpthat is electrically driven. It has:

    - an electric motor,- a housing,- a crankshaft,- bearings,- inlet and outlet valves,- two drive rods,- two bellows (which function as a double-pistonair compressor unit).

    The electrical motor is fan cooled and has its ownhousing. The motor operates at 3600 rpm when it issupplied with 115 VAC 400Hz from the 3 phase currentof AC BUS 2. A thermal-overload protection circuitmomentarily stops the motor in case of overheat.The air compressor supplies approximately two cubicfeet of clean compressed air to the potable water tankat a pressure of 37 psi (2.55 bar). The pressure inthe tank is increased to 28 psi (1.93 bar).

    GENERAL

    The waste water drain system disposes waste water fromthe lavatory wash basins and from the galley sinks.

    DRAIN ASSEMBLY

    Each lavatory wash basin has a drain assembly with avalve actuated by a control knob and a cable.

    NOTE: The control knob is operated by the lavatoryuser.

    DRAIN VALVE

    Each drain valve opens only when a certain amount ofwater is collected.This prevents a permanent loss of cabin airpressurization through the drain lines.

    DRAIN MAST

    In flight, differential pressure between the cabin andthe drain mast outlet disgards the waste water.On ground, gravity disgards the waste water.The drain masts are electrically heated to prevent iceformation.

    COMPONENT DESCRIPTIONOn ground, the drain valve is open. During flight, thevalve is held closed by pressurized cabin air. Thevalve opens when the waste water, which enters thevalve, has built up enough pressure to displace thediaphragm. This prevents leakage of cabin air throughthe drain line.The drain valve can be manually operated by liftingthe seal assembly using the pull ring.

    LAVATORY DRAIN ASSEMBLY

    COMPONENT DESCRIPTIONThe lavatory wash basins have a drain valve assemblyfor the drainage of the waste water. The wash basindrain valve has a connection for the drain line.   • VACUUM TOILET SYSTEM PRINCIPLE

    GENERAL

    Potable water from the aircraft pressurized potablewater system is used to rinse the toilet bowl.Differential pressure between the cabin and theatmosphere moves the waste from the toilet bowl to thewaste holding tank.This difference of pressure can be caused by the vacuumgenerator or by aircraft pressurization.

    RINSE/FLUSH CONTROL

    A Flush Control Unit (FCU) per toilet controls therinse and flush cycle.

    VACUUM CONTROL

    As soon as a flush switch is pressed, electrical poweris supplied to the vacuum system controller.At high altitude, the altitude pressure switch stopsthe electrical supply of the vacuum generator, thedifferential pressure between the cabin and theatmosphere being sufficient to move the waste from thetoilet bowl to the waste holding tank.At low altitude or on ground, the altitude pressureswitch stays closed. The vacuum generator generatesthe necessary differential pressure.
