GENERAL Motormaster I solid-state head pressure control regulates fan speed. A temperature sensor, mounted on a return bend of the condenser (outdoor) coil, activates the device. The Motor- master I controller controls the speed of approved condenser (outdoor) fan motors in order to maintain a constant head pres- sure in the condenser (outdoor) coil. When properly installed, the control will maintain the appropriate head pressure at low ambient temperatures down to –20 F. Usage is shown in Table 1. INSTALLATION 1. Disconnect power to the unit. 2. Disconnect condenser (outdoor) fan motor (OFM) wires at the contactor and capacitor. Note position of fan blades in relation to fan orifice. NOTE: 38ARD012, 38ARQ008-012, 38ARS008-12, and 38ARZ007-012 units require 2 OFMs. 3. Remove OFM(s) from the unit (except 38AKS013-024, 38ARD014-024, and 38AQS012-016 units with voltages 220-3-50, 208/230-3-60, 400-3-50, and 460-3-60). 4. Remove fan blade(s) from motor(s). 5. Mount Motormaster I controller on the unit. See Fig. 1. The controller must be mounted vertically with leads at the bottom. Using the template supplied with the control- ler, drill 4 mounting holes. To ensure electrical ground, insert star lockwashers (supplied with the controller) un- der the heads of the sheet metal screws. For 38ARD,ARQ,ARZ007-012 units, a field-fabricated mounting bracket is required (2 for 38ARD012 units). See Fig. 2. The bracket is mounted under the unit control box. Mounting holes are provided in the unit basepan. NOTE: The 32LT900301 Motormaster I device is rated at 8 amps, and the 32LT900611Motormaster I device is rated at 4 amps.

GENERALMotormaster I solid-state head pressure control regulates

fan speed. A temperature sensor, mounted on a return bend ofthe condenser (outdoor) coil, activates the device. The Motor-master I controller controls the speed of approved condenser(outdoor) fan motors in order to maintain a constant head pres-sure in the condenser (outdoor) coil. When properly installed, the control will maintain the appropriate head pressure at lowambient temperatures down to 20 F. Usage is shown inTable 1.

INSTALLATION1. Disconnect power to the unit.2. Disconnect condenser (outdoor) fan motor (OFM) wires

at the contactor and capacitor. Note position of fan bladesin relation to fan orifice.NOTE: 38ARD012, 38ARQ008-012, 38ARS008-12,and 38ARZ007-012 units require 2 OFMs.

    3. Remove OFM(s) from the unit (except 38AKS013-024,38ARD014-024, and 38AQS012-016 units with voltages220-3-50, 208/230-3-60, 400-3-50, and 460-3-60).

    4. Remove fan blade(s) from motor(s).5. Mount Motormaster I controller on the unit. See Fig. 1.

The controller must be mounted vertically with leads atthe bottom. Using the template supplied with the control-ler, drill 4 mounting holes. To ensure electrical ground, insert star lockwashers (supplied with the controller) un-der the heads of the sheet metal screws. For 38ARD,ARQ,ARZ007-012 units, a field-fabricatedmounting bracket is required (2 for 38ARD012 units).See Fig. 2. The bracket is mounted under the unit controlbox. Mounting holes are provided in the unit basepan.

  • 26. Route sensor wire from bottom of Motormaster I control tosensor location as specified in Fig. 3-7. Fasten sensor with3/4-in. 4-40 screws, plate washers, and 4-40 nuts provided.

    7. Replace the OFM(s), if required, with the motor(s) shownin Table 1. Rewire the motor connections as shown inFig. 8-21. Two wirenuts are included in package, if needed.NOTE: A capacitor is needed on 48/50HJ006 and50HJQ006 single-phase units; 48/50TF,TJ004-006 units;and 50TJQ004-006 units. On single-phase 48/50HJ006 and 50HJQ006 units, use thecapacitor (HC91CA010) as an additional capacitor in par-allel. Use the capacitor strap to hold the capacitor in place. On single-phase and 3-phase 50TFQ,TJQ004-006 and48/50TF,TM,TJ004-006 units, replace the capacitor with

a field-supplied capacitor (HC98KA048, HC91CA010respectively). Use the capacitor strap to hold the capacitorin place.

    8. Coil up all excess wire and secure it next to the controller.9. Winter start control is required on all units except

condensing unit heat pumps. On units equipped with alow-pressure switch on the suction line, disconnectlow-pressure switch and replace it with Carrier partno. HK02ZB038. Locate the new switch on the accessport located on the liquid line (small rooftop units only).

    10. Wind baffles are required to prevent wind cross currentsfrom causing abnormally low condensing temperatures.Fabricate sheet metal baffles as shown in Fig. 22-25. Use20-gage sheet metal.

    11. Re-install fan blade. Ensure that fan blade is properly lo-cated in the orifice. Refer to the base unit installation in-structions for further details.

    12. Reconnect power to the unit.

Sensor assembly is delicate. Handle with care.
