COUrTNEY haTE Courtney Love has pulled out of Soundwave.A week after the ofcial line-up wasannounced, the Hole singer kicked up afuss after she found out her band would beopening for Limp Bizkit.Soundwave organiser AJ Maddah said that hewould “wait to talk to her dipshit agent” beforeconrming that the ‘90s band had ofciallydropped out of the line-up, but eventuallysaid that the only excuse offered by Love’smanagement was that Hole did not want toshare the stage/open for Fred Durst’s crew.Maddah understandably said that he was“really mad” but added that Soundwave
management was relieved that they “got themoody old cow off the bill”. Love respondedto all of this as many musicians do these daysby taking to twitter to vent her frustration ina public forum, saying that she would love toplay the festival but questioned “what bloodyight of crazed fancy made you think we’dopen for limp dude?”.

i’M SUPEr, ThaNKS FOr aSKiNg What the hell is going on with all of these “superheroes”? Eversince Mark Millar’s comic book Kick-Ass came out followed bythe lm adaptation, real-life people have been asking themselves
why people don’t go out dressed up in costume and ght fortruth and justice the attention-seeking way.One of the most infamous “supes” is Detroit masked-manPhoenix Jones. You may have seen the street-level beat-worker on YouTubespraying pepper spray into the eyes of those he deems as havingdone unjust actions. But life isn’t a comic book and when you attackpeople on the street there are legal repercussions. So what dosuperheroes do? What would the likes of Batman, Spider-Man orWolverine do when faced with legal action? They sure as hell wouldn’t call for a sanctioning body to representthe men behind the masks. And that’s the difference betweenreal life and comic books. The website reallifesuperheroes.org isthrowing around the idea of a representing body/council for thegrowing movement of crime-ghters.Hey, if you want to do some good for the community – go for it.
Help out. If you see someone in trouble, call the cops. Do whatyou can to help in day-to-day life. But don’t go martyring yourselfafter pepper spraying someone. You’re looking for a ght, andthat’s just a dick move.
SmaShIng newSThe Smashing Pumpkins are getting some nostalgic reissues.Gish (1991) and Siamese Dream (1993) are the iconic band’srst two albums, and MI is launching an extensive re-releasecampaign in December across multi formats. The CD, deluxe, vinyl and digital editions are all of course remastered.EMI announced that they will also be issuing a collection of
B-sides from 1991-2000, saying “The pivotal group’s many hitsdened the alternative music era and continue to resonateon modern rock radio, inuencing a whole new generation.”In even further Smashing news, early next year the bandwill be releasing Oceania after their American and Europeantour. Described as “an album within an album”, Oceania is apart of the band’s in-progress 44-song work Teargarden By Kaleidyscope , and will feature 13 new songs.
FilM NEWS An actress who has not been named is suing film website IMDBforrevealing her age and real name. The subsidiary of Amazon.com is
suffering legal action on the basis that the actress’ information wasacquired by unlawful means and has subsequently been damagingto “Jane Doe’s” career in the youth-orientated town of tinsel.A Zombieland sequel has been in the works since the lm wonover audiences and received the critical acclaim it deserved. Now, however, it’s looking like the sequel has developed into atelevision series. This was the original idea behind the projectbefore it was turned into a feature, so we could be looking at anew zombie series for 2012-2013.You may remember the DVD release of Yorgos Lanthimos’Dogtooth earlier this year. The lm won over critics and wascriticised at the same time for its dark and taboo tones. NowLanthimos is returning with Alps , which has been picked up fordistribution in America. There’s no word of the lm reachingour shores yet, but we’re hoping the unique lmmaking style
of Lanthimos impresses audiences enough for Alps to at leastmake it over for next year’s NZ Film Fest.Occupy Wall Street has two notable lm directors thinking. One (unsurprisingly) is Michael Moore , who is inspired to makeanother documentary. The other, much more out of left eld,is Chris Nolan who is considering shooting the occupation aspart of The Dark Knight Rises.

There’s a credit crunch on and everyone is
tightening their purse strings. So much so that
money becomes irrelevant and people start
trading goods and services for time. As in, you’re
born, and you get time, then you work, and you get
time, but you spend, and you lose time. It’s a weird
concept, but kind of interesting.
It’s a bummer being a teenager. Especially when
you’re a British teenager on a television show,

Until you get your movie deal and you’re basically

really funny.

Veried hilarious riot.

JUST OVER TWO years ago, enigmatic hit-making and soul-breaking
magazine NME spun a story about Florence Welch. She was pinned as a
wai, a delinquent, and a wayward soul, decked head-to-toe in owery,
ouncy dresses, bangles and all the rest. Her verbatim addressed
everything but the music or which she
was ast becoming noted or, ocussinginstead on skipping college, wearing
leopard-print platorms, inhaling, and
alling out o trees on Hampstead Heath.
A story on scuzzy, London-based,
Velvet Underground-adoring duo The
Big Pink a ew months later detailed a
house party in Shoreditch – Ms Welch
hersel running up and down stairs to
change LPs whilst members o Klaxons
looked on.
It seems that Welch, in her own way,
was always a fxture.
Fast orward to late 2010 and Flo is
mid-way through her tour to support
her debut album Lungs. She needn’thave though, because as she jet-setted
across Europe on the strength o ‘Dog
Days’, battle plans were being drawn or
her invasion Stateside. Within months
she’d perormed at the VMAs and
the Grammys, on Saturday Night Live
and The Colbert Report . Time magazine
ranked her as a very important person.
Lungs charted in the Top Ten in a lot o
countries. Joan Rivers mocked her on
Fashion Police.
It seems a ar cry rom the early
successes o the rantic ‘Kiss With A
Fist’ and the haunting ‘Girl With One
Eye’, both tracks existing and thriving on the strength o Welch’s voicewhich, thanks to raw and unadulterated production, shone through.
Lungs expanded on that heavily percussive ormat, indie go-to guy Paul
Epworth unlocking any proverbial door he could fnd. His production
turned already soulul songs into skyscraping anthems.
Let’s not orget, though, artists the world over struggle or decades to
get hal o Welch’s success with double the talent, and now that entirely
indistinct voice has become a vehicle or lumpy big-wigs to make some
serious cash.
She proclaims that her upcoming record Ceremonials is “a group o songs
that paint a unifed picture o where I am in my lie right now”.
Strange thing is: she’s never done that beore.
I ‘Girl With One Eye’ was an accurate representation o her lie up
to that point (“I took a knie and cut out her eye/ I took it home and
watched it wither and die”) then surely we should all be increasingly
worried by the means by which she’s achieved her ame to date.
Read any interview with Welch in
support o Ceremonials and you’ll getthe same spool o misrepresentation.
Any journalist worth their salt can
pick up on the endless buzzword-
coaching she’s been given over
the last ew years, and it doesn’t
take much investigating to ind
quotes riddled with pauses as
she desperately tries to explain
her own view on a topic that
isn’t her perceived and enorced
aux-eccentricity. Her biography
proclaims her to be an art college
“dropout” – as i somehow that’s
something to aspire to.
O course, with any major successcomes that enormous portion o
budding hacks dying to make their
big break, and so Welch becomes
merely another tool or their supposed
trade. Various publications discuss
her ADHD, insomnia, anorexia and
dysmetria in depth whilst identiying
her musical career to date with two
slivers o transcript intended to
shoehorn some context in to the mix:
this is Florence Welch, she makes
music occasionally, but she’s mental
most o the time.
Regardless o any internal struggle
(which Epworth seems to smother in reverb, irrespective o thesentiment), Florence Welch still walks the red carpet with the rest o
them; she still parties with Anna Wintour, she still gets ollowed by the
hounding British tabloids and not the credible music press, and she
still stands to make an enormous pile o cash should the ensuing PR
campaign or Ceremonials pay o.
Politics aside, leading single ‘What The Water Gave Me’ is a monster
tune – it rises, crests, and alls beore exploding outwards, and there
certainly will be more to come. So simply remember this: i you can
ignore that plastic ascination and ashing photography in avour o her
impressive canon o work, then you can truly appreciate Florence and
her marvellous machine.

FLY MY PRETTIES have become something o a New Zealand
institution. Formed in 2004, debuting with the brilliant Live At Bats and
ermented over another seven years, the revolving collective o musicians
has morphed and transormed over the duration o each tour, providing
the heady sense o theatre and spectacle that is lacking rom many other
regular touring bands and collectives. This year’s line-up calls upon the core
cast, most o who were present through
the previous three tours, including L.A.
Mitchell, Anna Coddington and Age Pryor,
whilst expanding to accommodate the
wealth o new music emanating rom these
shores. Alongside members o The Nudge,
Cairo Knie Fight, Kora and even Flip Grater
hersel, visual artist Hayley King – under
the guise o Flox – has joined the ranks as
one o the ew non-musical contributors.
But that doesn’t mean her gits to the service
will be any less integral to the overall
presentation o the show.
King’s illustrations seem like a perectft or something as organic as Fly My
Pretties, her works oten incorporating
native birds and bustling natural
surrounds, rom sparser prints to
expansive and intricate murals splashed on
to the walls o public buildings.
As a ormer collaborator with the
excellent street art co-op Cut Collective,
King is used to the intense pressure that
regular deadlines bring.
“For me, I’ve been doing this or so long
now, so I eel I am a confdent artist in my
own right,” she says. “But it’s daunting in
regard to working with some really amazing
musicians which I’ve never done beore, and going on tour with them, which is crazy, crazy stu. I’ve been on tour with Cut Collective – we
used to do group shows together which is a bit like being in a band
because we were always fghting and all the rest, but it’s a dierent kind
o creative feld altogether.”
King was frst approached by ringmasters Barnaby Weir and Mikee
Tucker. “They both came in to my studio one day and basically pinned
me down,” she laughs, “and said they wanted me to be a part o it all.”
She was set to work attacking the enormous scope that a show o Fly My
Pretties’ calibre demands.
“I have to illustrate all 15 tracks whicheach need to work as a poster, so when you
walk in to the gig there’ll be an exhibition
o 15 posters, one or every track, available
in limited edition prints,” says King.
“Also, it has to translate certain elements,
somehow rom that poster or vice versa,
into something that can be brought to lie or
somehow animated, so a lot o the imagery is
going to be used in the backdrop behind the
musicians on stage in various orms, that’s
the new part or me. I’m not doing any o the
animation, but I have to think o the images
in that way and how they can be interesting
or people to look at and how they can
evolve, I guess, and basically how they can be brought to lie.”
Although working in and around a
medium she’s unamiliar with, Flox isn’t
daunted by the responsibility that comes
with marrying visual accompaniment to
musical expression.
“I defnitely eel responsible,” she says. “I
have to come up with something that works
as a 2D illustration and also as some sort o
3D working element, and the artist has to
be happy with it as well and it has to reect
who they are and what the song is about, to a
certain degree, so there’s lots o boxes to tick
i you like.”
As usual, the tour will be flmed in all the major centers o the tourto be released as a live DVD, displaying all o King’s talents in high-
defnition glory. There should be no doubt that she will approach her
duties in Fly My Pretties with anything less than the aplomb we should
expect rom a world-class artist.

IT’S BEEN FIVE years since Midnight Youth began to lay the
oundations or their reshman eort The Brave Don’t Run, and those fve
years have made the dierence. Redmore says their frst was introverted,
but World Comes Calling is a dierent story.
“It’s an extroverted album,” he muses. “We aren’t singing about
ourselves. It’s things we’ve seen.” This new outward view oers listeners
a moodier, more observational Midnight Youth with attitude. “It’s a
defnition o where we’re at. A snapshot o us right now.”
Redmore says the band even toyed with the idea o sel-titling therecord. But they didn’t. It was a struggle to name World Comes Calling , so
they lited the name straight o o what is now the title track. “It’s a little
bit o magic,” Redmore says on their choice o moniker. “It aects you. I
don’t quite know how.” He’s right though; the name has that niggle that
makes you sit up and listen.
Growing up gives you grown up aspirations. Midnight Youth want to
be a live band, and even go so ar as to say they see themselves suiting
the live estival circuit. Redmore has a vision o them as a nighttime rock
set at Glastonbury. The majority o the songs on World Comes Calling are
written or live perormance, and even the song descriptions encapsulate
this desire.
The band recently spent a year living and touring together in Sydney,
which allowed or them to try and throw away songs; their songwriting
technique has been to test live. Living together also allowed or them
grow tighter. “We’re like a amily. It’s a cool vibe,” says Redmore. “We’d
go out every weekend.” He says that it was a handy situational thing
because when he gets song ideas, Simon’s right there with him. “It’s like a
gang eel. It’s a unique thing.”
Redmore expects touring details to be out soon, and stayed tight-
lipped when asked i there are any estival dates looming with the
summer estivals drawing closer. “Summer is up in the air,” was all he
would let on. However, he did mention that he’d like or the band to playsomewhere like Rhythm & Vines and Big Day Out. “We eel we’ve done
the band justice,” says Redmore. “We’re doing what the people we look
up to do.”
Watch this space, because although those sights are set on stages
halway across the world, Midnight Youth know where their an base is.
“We want to give New Zealand our best shot,” says Redmore.

Lst week i ws lucky enuht he wn t the fshWynyr Qurter t enter b bubble tht i hppenet rhtly ssume ws the HPWnter gren. Luckily for me itwas a hands-on event that didn’tland me with a slap, courtesyof Xbox. The gaming giantswere previewing their latestand greatest, and here’s a quicksummary.
If you loved the rst h then you’ll have a blast re-livingit with h c e:
ay , which is the exactsame game but in HD. It alsohas a nifty feature where youcan switch the graphics back tonon-HD which essentially makesyou feel like you’ve taken yourglasses off or had one too manypints before playing.
I’ve loved the Xbox Kinectfor having mates around andplaying games that you couldclass under funnier thaninteresting. It’s a piece of socialhardware that gets you andyour mates into what would
otherwise be a stupid game, but the competitiveness of theKinect makes the mundanebecome playable. The gamethat caught my attention morethan most was k s w.Everyone has wanted to wielda light saber whilst throwingyour enemies through a glasswindow using the force, andnow you can. Jump over yourenemies, slash them with yourlight saber, force blast thembackwards or pull them towardsyou all without leaving the spot.
Now this is fun. It’s great to seethat companies are starting togure out interesting ways touse the Kinect.
g w 3 is anotheraddition to the game that forme stands out more than most
XBoX ShoWcaSe evenT
for its forward thinking of theoriginal version to really makethe most of co-op mode. Goodto know that this carries on withsolo, split screen or four-way (viaXbox Live) modes are available.Once again, the graphics aregreat and gameplay seems tobe as enjoyable as it alwayshas been. Unfortunately I didn’tget a long time on this one, butwhat I played I enjoyed and I’msure it’ll be as a big a seller as itspredecessors.
I loved experiencing f
with three screens, seat, pedalsand paddles for gears. Howeverif you’re like me and you’re notDonald Trump, then the gameitself is also available on Kinectand 360. The Kinect version Iwasn’t sold on, as you have tohold your arms up like you’redriving, but without anything tohold onto, your arms get heavysurprisingly quickly. The gameitself is great though – moretracks, more cars and overall ithas the same realistic gameplaythat most love.
All in all a good staple ofgames for Christmas from Xboxas well as stuff in the pipeline. There were other games onshow, but these were the standouts for me.

Jermaine sprinkles a few geniuslines on each track, which areworth listening to despitesub-par choruses. ‘Dollar AndA Dream III’, ‘Lights Please’ and‘Sideline Story’ are rapped withenough conviction to satisfyhungry fans. The North Carolina native alsotouches on some interestingsubjects, speaking from theviewpoint of a pregnantwoman during ‘Lost Ones’and about daddy issues on‘Breakdown’. c w isn’t

For thisguy that’s saying something:in the past decade there haveonly been sporadic ashes ofthe former brilliance he exudedin the nineties. And while Noelmay not possess that raw Mancfever that Liam’s voice had, it’sevident that he’s relished in thesolo vocal opportunity – h
fy b is 10 laid back, contenttracks that play to his classicsongwriter strengths. On ‘If I Hada Gun’, the balladry is at a 10-yearhigh – his best since ‘Stop CryingYour Eyes Out’. ‘AKA... What a Life’
is invigorating in that it actuallyhas a groove you can dance to.‘The Good Rebel’ shines as a La’stribute – in fact the only draggingpoints are when his Kinks/Smiths infatuation becomes toooverbearing. Not Oasis withoutthe voice: this is a second shot atgreatness.

Snsn s gere McCullum’s(Mtce’s utrst) ltestprject. It’s a step into the post-punk lo- production valuesof shoegaze, though given itscontemporary existence, it’s nu-gaze. ly is a ve track debutEP writhing in the former andwith dabblings of industrial andpsychedelic. The title track startsthings off instrumentally, mixing
pot tapping and machine noisestogether to create climbingrhythmic intensity. It is also theacoustic height of the EP, butthat’s in no way a downfall. The EP masters atmosphere;an aura of tension creepsthroughout all ve tracks. Themiddle three tracks have lyrics, playing more with psychedelia. The vocals are mournfuland ‘Blinded By Your Eyes’ isparticularly haunting. However, there is nothingcatchy and nothing happy
which makes Layers reallyexciting. Sinsin could have easilyslipped into London twentyyears ago and looked the realdeal. A fascinating new additionto the Kiwi alter register.

Crem the bln crp,ths pr were. Now they’re thecream of the major independentlabel crop. Evan Abeele (hemakes most of the music) andDenise Nouvion (she makes thenice lady-noises) released TheYears way back in 2010 when itwas trés cool to pump out anEP’s worth of acid-washed, hazyelectronica before disappearing
back into telemarketing. Well, these cats must have somethingparticularly special about themif they managed to sign toSub Pop, right? Oh yeah, goodtunes. Alongside the denseartwork and smoky texturesare ve gentle odes to... well, something. It all just soundsreally nice. ‘Lately’ takes a prettybig slice from Jon Brion’s EternalSunshine Of The Spotless Mindsoundtrack, whilst opener ‘SleepPatterns’ is marked with thesort of haunting and emotive
precedent that is sadly lackingfrom most ash-in-the-pan blogfavourites. If The Years has beenremastered for Sub Pop then itis very subtle indeed, but thenagain, it’s a record to get lost in.

constant wink/nudge of theWUO prevails here: whether it’sthe playful AC ditty ‘AfternoonDelight’ (I still can’t get RonBurgundy out of my head whenhearing this) or the lovelornSteve Jessup singing drunkenlyabout ‘Raylene’, it’s the senseof summer playfulness thatshines through the most. has a quality that teeters betweenmagical and ridiculous as Giltime travels between his shallowancée Inez (Rachel McAdams) tohis surreal romance with Picasso’smistress Adriana (Marion Cotillard).Don’t count on Gil (a perfectlybefuddled Owen Wilson) to holdmany illuminating conversationswith his idols; the point of thiswhimsical Allen confection is tomuse on the nature of the grassalways being greener.
But with little conict in Gil’sfantasy world (everyone appearsto him as idealised versions ofthemselves), Midnight in Parisoats along like the dreamsequence it is, leaving the viewerfeeling simultaneously cheated
and amused. Some of thedialogue feels contrived, too– the characters coming outwith lines as though they werewritten purely to identify theiraws, particularly the one-dimensional Inez. Somehowthough, Gil – and in turnAllen – emerges as charming, neurotic and witty. Despite itsaws, m p willleave a smile on your face, anda yearning to visit the Paris of
yesteryear.
