About the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant PathologyCreation of the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology (ISMPP)

was a dream of Plant Pathologists of early seventies who were inspired by doyenssuch as Dr N Prasad and Dr R Prasada. For quite sometimes prior to 1969, alarge number of Mycologists and Plant Pathologists felt the necessity of anadditional journal to publish their research findings without delay. This need wasobvious due to increasing importance of agriculture and concominant severebiotic stress due to diseases, an increase in the number of Agriculture Universitiesand Research Institutions in India after independence. Consequently, an increasedoutput of research on fundamental and applied aspects of Mycology and PlantPathology was also required.

The idea to start a new journal of Plant Pathology with its head quarter atSKN College of Agriculture, Jobner, Rajasthan was mooted with the establishmentof the new Society in December, 1969. The Journal was officially rolled outentitled “Indian Journal of Mycology and Plant Pathology” with first volume issuedin December 1971 as official organ of the society.

In 1970 the Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology finally startedfunctioning from Udaipur. An interim Editorial Board was formed and lateDr N Prasad was requested to shoulder the responsibilities of publication of theJournal as Chief Editor.

During the formative phase of the Society, an academician and industrialistlate Shri P P Singhal, founder of Pesticides India Ltd., Udaipur helped generouslyin various ways. He was the founder “Patron” of the society and initiated anannual prestigious award named as “Pesticides India Award”.

Till 1981, the Journal was published twice a year in January and July, theperiodicity of which was raised to three times in a year i.e. April, August andDecember. The journal JMPP is now published quarterly with 4 issues a year(March, June, Sept. & Dec.) since 2010.

The society has also started publication of ISMPP News from the year 1995.Dr Y L Nene had been the founder Editor of the Newsletter. The Societyendeavored for a new venture of publishing Annual Review of Plant Pathologyfrom year 2002.

The Society has sponsored 38 Annual Conferences till date in almost all theStates of India. The society successfully organized three Global Conferences atUdaipur in the year 1995, 2005 and 2012; two Asian Congresses in 2002 atUniversity of Mysore, Mysore and in 2007 at Osmania University, Hyderabadand one International Conference at University of Rajasthan, Jaipur in 2017.The society established number of prestigious awards including Y L Nene Out-

standing Plant Pathology Teacher Award, Prof H C Dube Outstanding Youngscientist Award, Prof K S Bilgrami Best Poster Presentation Award, Smt GumanDevi Verma Memorial Best Women Scientist Award, P R Verma Award for M Sc& Ph D students, more recently Prof S S Chahal Life Time Achievement awardwas instituted from the year 2012 and Dr R Prasada Memorial Best PublishedPaper award started from 2015.

Activities includes Presidential address, N Prasad memorial lecture; R Prasadamemorial lecture; V P Bhide memorial lecture and P R Verma Memorial lectureby eminent plant pathologists of the country. The Society has more than 1250members, including annual members, life members and foreign members, institutions and libraries. The Journal is abstracted by various scientific agenciesover the world.

The Society holds election and/or nomination every year for the positions ofPresident and Zonal President (North, South, East and West). The OrganizingSecretary for the annual conference is nominated as Vice President for the ensuingyear. Election and/or nomination to the offices of Secretary and Treasurer areheld once in every 3 years. Number of eminent scientists of the country haveserved the Society in their capacities as Presidents and Secretaries sharing theresponsibility of nurturing and continued development all through.

PreambleGlobal change processes have been affecting plant health at various temporal

and spatial scales, from the genetic to the individual level, from seasons to decades, from fields to countries, for each of the numerous existing and emerging/reemergingplant-pest/pathogen associations. Recently increased global trade has resulted inintroduction and establishment of number of invasive pests and pathogens in thecountry. In the context of climate change, there is likelihood of shift in the occurrenceof some weather dependent pest and pathogens and same time the situation alsomay lead to the changes of the spectrum of harmful organisms. In the postGATT scenario, farmers have been exposed to global competition with regard totheir crop production and protection technologies, quality of produce, scale up ofproduction and commodity price. The shift in pathogenic virulence is evident dueto climate change which is becoming major threat in reduction of crop yields.Problem persists in the area of correct diagnosis of the diseases caused by abioticand biotic factors. Remarkable development in the field of molecular detection ofplant pests as well as application of genetic engineering to produce transgenicplants having resistance against major plant pests and pathogens provide innovativetools for both diagnosis and management. Besides, ecofriendly biological controlapproaches for management of seed and soil-borne diseases, the advances in

search of new molecules for effective disease management in the crops withmanagable residues are being made. Many plant protection technologies need tobe fine manageable in a holistic approach in context of globalization and climatechange scenario. Against such a challenging backdrop this symposium is beingorganized to provide a common platform to academia, students and otherstakeholders to share their experiences and knowledge about the latest developmentin different aspects of plant protection arena and to plan a comprehensive strategyin defining a wholesome approach to crop protection through holistic use ofemerging technologies.

The Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology (ISMPP), MPUAT,Udaipur is a premier Society devoted to disseminate the scientific advancementin plant disease research through its official organ Journal of Mycology and PlantPathology, Review of Plant Pathology and ISMPP News. The society annuallyorganizes the conferences and national symposia for facilitating interaction amongstresearchers and faster exchange and dissemination of the advances in plant diseaseresearch. It is with the same objective the 39th Annual Conference and NationalSymposium on “Plant and Soil Health Management:New Challenges andOpportunities” is being organized during 16-18th November, 2018 at ICAR-IIPR Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.
