Part 1 Learning about Conjunctions (15min)
Conjunctions (Optional : learn more about conjunctions here)
Conjunctions are words or groups of words that join sentences or parts of sentences.
In this lesson, we will focus on the “and”, “but” and “or” conjunctions. Look at the sentences below.
He is smart He is lazy(Simple sentence) (Simple sentence)
He is smart but lazy.(Compound sentence)
conjunction
Coordinating conjunctions• In this lesson, we will be focusing only on one group of conjunctions -
the coordinating conjunctions.
• Coordinating conjunctions, also called coordinators, are conjunctions that join two or more items of equal importance. The most commonly used coordinating conjunctions are “and”, “or” and “but”.
Conjunctions
CoordinatingConjunctions
Eg. and or but
CorrelativeConjunctions
Eg. either … or both … and
SubordinatingConjunctions
Eg. although before until
The “and” conjunction We use “and” to join sentences when their meanings go well
together.
Example 1 : Fiona has a bicycle. Her brother has a motorcycle. Fiona has a bicycle and her brother has a motorcycle.
(they go well together because both are vehicles.)
Example 2 : Billie is a doctor and his brother is an engineer.
(they go well together because both are occupations.)
We do not use “and” when the two things to be joined are contrasting in meaning.
Example 3 : Meg met with an accident and she was not hurt. X (they do not go well together because meeting with an accident is a bad thing and not being hurt is a good thing)
We use “but” to join sentences when their meanings contrast with each other.
EXAMPLE: Russ is quiet. His cousin is talkative.Russ is quiet but his cousin is talkative.(Quiet contrasts with talkative.)
We do not use “but” when the two things to be joined are similar or go well together in meaning.
Billie is a doctor but his brother is an engineer. X(both are occupations)
The “but” conjunction
We use or to join sentences to show that only one of the choices will take place.
EXAMPLE: We can eat at a restaurant. We can have a barbecue at home.
We can eat at a restaurant or we can have a barbecue at home.
The “or” conjunction
CombinationsWhen we use and/or to join three or more sentences, it is best
to do the following:
sentence + comma + sentence (+ comma + sentence + ... ) + and/or + sentence
EXAMPLES:
I'm Jo. She's May. He's Ali.
I'm Jo, she's May and he's Ali.
I'll go first. She'll go first. We'll go together.
I'll go first, she'll go first or we'll go together.
Some examplesCorrectI am writing, she is drawing and he is cooking.
Meg met with an accident but she was not hurt
We must practise hard or they'll beat us.Julie tasted the pudding but did not like it.
Pete ran up the stairs, stumbled and fell.
IncorrectWe must practise hard, they'll beat us. X
(there are only two parts, which therefore requires only one conjunction. A comma is not needed)
I am writing and she is drawing and he is cooking. X
(there are 3 parts and they are similar. Since you have to use “and” twice, use a comma to
replace the first “and”.)
