    3G

3G is a telecommunication hardware standards andgeneral Technology for mobile networking

It is based on the International Telecommunication Union

    (ITU) family of standards

It conceived from Universal Mobile TelecommunicationService (UMTS) concept for high speed networks

It consists of two main standards CDMA 2000 & w-CDMA

Services wide-area wireless voice Telephone, videocalls, and broadband wireless, data all in a mobileenvironment

    History

First pre-commercial 3G network waslaunched by Japan in May 2001

First post-commercial launch by Japan in

Oct 2001 The second network is SK Telecom of South

    Korea in Jan 2002

First commercial 3G network of US is Monet

Mobile Network on CDMA 2000 Second network id Verizon Wireless in Oct

    2003 on CDMA 2000

    First Generation

    Analog systems

    Implemented in North America

known as Analog Mobile PhoneSystems (AMPS)

based on circuit-switched technologyand designed for voice, not data.

    Second Generation

    Based on low-band digital datasignaling

    Mostly based on Circuit Switchedtechnology

These are digital and expand therange of applications to more

advanced voice services. not suitable for web browsing and

    multimedia applications

    Global System for MobileCommunications (GSM)

First implemented in 1991 by Finland

It is a combination of Frequency DivisionMultiple Access (FDMA) and Time

    Division Multiple Access (TDMA)

It operates in the 900MHz and 1.8 GHzbands throughout the world (exceptAmerica)

In America it operates in 1.9 GHz band

    Enhanced Data for Global Evolution(EDGE)

Also , called as Enhanced Data ratesfor GSM Evolution

A radio based high-speed mobile datastandards

Enables services like multimediaemailing, Web infotainment and video

    conferencing

    General Packet Radio Service(GPRS)

Enhancement for GSM core networksthat introduces packet datatransmission

    It uses radio spectrum

It provides always connectivity andgreater bandwidth

    Worldwide roaming

    Code Division Multiple Access(CDMA)

    Developed in North America

It uses spread spectrum technology tobreak up speech into small, digitized

segments and encodes them to identifyeach call

It providing clearer voice quality with lessbackground noise, fewer dropped calls,

enhanced security, greater reliability andgreater network capacity.

    3G Wireless Networks

It represents the convergence of various 2Gwireless telecommunications systems into asingle global system

First adopted in Japan and South Korea Its ability is to unify existing cellular

standards such as CDMA, GSM, and TDMAunder one umbrella

This results wideband CDMA, CDMA2000and the Universal Wireless Communication(UWC) interfaces
