1.0 General

1.1 The 3M™ Outdoor Fiber Distribution Terminal 8924 is a wall mount fiber distribution terminal (FDT) designed to provide cross-connect between distribution and drop cables in a Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) network. Distribution cable(s) enter the left side of the terminal, are then spliced to fiber optic pigtails and plugged into couplings in the center partition of the terminal. Field or factory terminated drop cables are then plugged into the opposite side of the coupling to complete the connection. The terminal accommodates up to 24 drop cable terminations. Coupling plates are interchangeable, and permit rapid adaptation to different numbers of fiber ends, coupling types, and modes.

3M™ Outdoor Fiber Distribution Terminal 8924 features:

•Dual chamber design for added security to protect cable splices from service operations

•Alternate locking mechanisms for chamber doors to allow access only by those with authorization

•Couplings and pigtails pre-loaded in the factory to save installation time and labor

3.1 Intended Location: The 3M™ Outdoor Fiber Distribution Terminal 8924 was originally designed for use in Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) networks. Installation was intended for outdoor Multiple Dwelling Unit (MDU) applications, however, the wall-mount terminal can also be used indoors.

3.2 Purpose: The 8924 FDT secures connections between distribution and drop cables run to individual living or working units. In other network applications, drop cables are run to other fiber optic enclosures or equipment.

3.3 Access Requirements: The 3M™ Outdoor Fiber Distribution Terminal 8924 has an outer door that can be opened with the use of a 7/16” nut driver, or “can wrench”. The inner door, which secures the incoming, distribution cable and spliced to pigtails in the terminal, can only be opened by using the included key.

3.4 Fiber Capacities and Radii: The 3M™ Outdoor Fiber Distribution Terminal 8924 can hold up to four single 3M™ Coupling Plates 8400 Series. These can be configured to provide as many as 24 fiber ports per terminal. The housing allows installation and use with all fiber bends maintained at a radius of 1.5" (38 mm) or more.

3.5 System Mounting: The 3M™ Outdoor Fiber Distribution Terminal 8924 can be mounted to plywood or other such mounting surface through the use of brass inserts (located in the back of the terminal) or to a wall or rail using mounting brackets (sold separately).

5.2 Open inner door with included key.

This door can be removed by simply lifting up on the door for easy access to the interior.

5.3 Strip and prepare the distribution cable end per company practice.

5.4 Trim the CSM so that 3 1/2” (9 cm) is exposed for securing in the screw lug bar.

5.5 If the cable is to be grounded, a 3M™ Scotchlok™ Shield Bond Connector 4460-D should be installed now.

5.6 Insert the cable strength member into the screw lug bar and tighten securely.

5.7 If the cable is to be grounded attach proper grounding material, per company practice.
